Superb production and narration. I just finished watching both episodes. I will certainly rewatch, most probably more than once. I can very accurately say I was almost fully ignorant of pre cursed-Bolshevik revolution Russian history. Eye opening. Hopefully, the nation can finally get over this very dark past. I personally can’t get over the Romanovs beyond cruel executions, but it’s been more than a century, God take mercy on this once glorious nation. Have always loved and admired their literary giants - have read Maxim Gorky, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy starting in my early childhood but had no idea that Russia had ever reached such sophistication, might and wealth before the revolt. This documentary cemented my abhorrence of revolutions and revolutionaries.

@@girumzemichael704 Everything was not so unambiguous, do not hate the revolutionaries, of course they made a revolution on German money, and Lenin himself was a traitor, but the white movement was guided by intervention, England and France actively took part in the collapse of our country, and the people, on the both sides were for Russia. Ordinary people sided with the revolution because they were tired, they worked day after day, there was not enough food, husbands were taken to the front, to fight for other countries, Nicholas 2 made a big mistake by entering World War 1. And the nobility didn't live very badly at that time. That's why people wanted equality. The revolution was necessary then, but in a different format. You can watch the series walking on agony from old media, very good.

Many moons ago, I worked at a university, and believe it or not my job was to type up the lecture notes for the Russian history prof for her lectures. Minute by minute, hour by hour I typed up all her long and what I thought were boring Russian history lectures. THEN, I watched these 8 episodes. Now I was sitting up, right there in the front row lapping up this information like a lap dog. I couldn't get enough. What a brilliant piece of work you have put together here. This documentary is great for education, much better than the school books here in Finland. It's always better to also show the human side of great leaders, than just list their achievements in the corner of a page for you to memorize. It makes them feel more real and relatable in your mind. And it's almost impossible to learn about Russian history via Western media, since it's only interested in the Soviet era of Russia (which is interesting too, but it's only a part of the bigger picture).

Yes, I've noticed; the DC money grubbers are all stuck in "USSR is BAD" mode. When in actuality it was CIA contributing to the "stir constantly when boiling" - keeping "ish" stirred up from the end of WW2 up until the collapse of USSR in 1992/93. THAT'S roughly 50 years. Why are they still stuck in the RUSSIA is BAD" mode? Because the threat of a nuclear exchange keeps MONEY funneling into government, M-I-C and defense contractors, and investors' bank accounts. They've been RUSSIA again for 30 years and are not the backward, illiterate, "joke-y" country that our ELITES would have US believe. Ukraine bad corruption. Poland has the Expansionist Dreams. The Baltic would prefer a return to the Prussian ways. And Germany is a huge instigator of all that is happening at present. Putin seems patient, deliberate in the UKR situation...but I believe that RU wins this one, while America is completely unprepared for their own coming collapse. Just my two cents...

The family lineage, the ascent to power within the various lineages, the stories of the personal lives of the ruling elite... the battles, the conquests, the defeats.. the power, the modernization .. all of it... mind blowing. You definitely don’t need to be college educated to be well read in a variety of subjects. I happen to have a college degree and unless you are getting a degree/masters/doctorate, you most likely wouldn’t take a class about European History. I personally have always been interested in history of any kind and both read and watch. A personal favorite book is an “autobiography” of Henry VIII written by Margaret George. There is even an audiobook on Kindle. I highly recommend it!

Yes! Poor Nicolas. He hadn't wanted the job and his father was heavy handed and didn't teach him the rules of governing. Nicky's courtesans lied to him about his people, that they loved him and they were living well when the people had nothing. It is a great example of how too much wealth in the hands of few leads to revolution. Much like what is happening in America today.

That is one severely underrated ability in leaders--leaders able to pick out good, competent people. Catherine the Great was not a military genius, but she was really good at choosing men who were military geniuses. Suvorov definitely comes to mind. Her armies were doing so well that even the best military genius of the past 500 years--Napoleon--wanted to join Catherine's armies. (Genghis Khan and his sons came 500 years before Napoleon--they were genius military leaders on par with Napoleon.) That tells you how great Catherine was at seeing and attracting good talent.

Was this the rise of power by the Satanic Underground? Britain had a war in 1918. USA started the Spanish flu, which was started in North Carolina, blamed on Spain because they refused to participate in WW1. Was Russia also refusing? I don't recall them being mentioned in WW1. We have to understand #TheEnemyWithin

@@annebradley6086 Who are you asking? I got a notification. I'm kind of curious; not sure what you are refering to. Depending where s person is coming from. There are a lot of groups of the period one might refer to as Satanic. I have been reading up on Marxism. It's interesting that throughout history these Marxist takeovers have eliminated relegion. They are anti anti religion. They are in fact "Anti - Christ." I wonder if this is relatable to your reference / question. I also wonder, did I stumble upon the actual anti - christ. Was the book of revelations refering to Marxism when it talks of the anti christ? Marxism certainly is = Anti Christ. kind of an interesting coincidence. Everything they have done in the past sure fits the descriptions of what to expect in the end times. Bring the world together under one rule, 3.5 yesrs of good, 3.5 yesrs of slaughter, men will dye from their hearts giving out, Gog and Magog, I'm sure you are familiar with the revelations. If Marxism is the Anti Christ, then I guess the followers of marxism would be satanic. What if any is your opinion. Even if this is not at all applicable to your thought here posted. I would still be interested in your thoughts on this possibly obvious connection, supposing this is one. Tell me what you think.

I've watched documentaries about the Romanovs but none ever compared to this one. I am now more obsessed than ever in the Romanovs' history. It's also amazing how the Dynasty started with an Anastasia (Ivan the Terrible's first wife) and also ended with an Anastasia (Nicholas I's daughter) in it, damn crazy coincidence.

I fell asleep and when I woke up, I was listening to this. I watched raptly for the entire time, and learned much. Best accident ever. Here in the West, Russians and their history were villanised, they were painted as abnormal, vicious, untrustworthy. I never truly believed it, and put it down to political machinations as the source. I have been enthralled by this sensitive, detailed account of the lives of Russian monarchy. There is great nobility and humanity in this account, and I have greatly enjoyed it. Now I wonder why there was any stigma taught to me at all. A very disturbing thought. There is enough evil in the world without adding hate to children's mind as they develop. People are people, and all the same, no matter where they are from or their cultural background. Why do our establishments insist on brainwashing us as kids?

The cold War and communism were very real and scary. Every country has done terrible things, but Russia was our country's only enemy that was truly feared. I'm just saying, try to look at the US history as objectively as you are Russia. I've watched multiple Russian documentaries and this one skims over a lot of nasty things that happened.

Thing is, many people who lived through the existential horror of the Cold War are still alive and many are in government or media related jobs and positions. Plus the Communists did a pretty good job at coloring the Imperial era as evil times run by evil people and themselves were obviously very evil (a government supposedly created to improve the lives of the working class caused the deaths of between 4 and 10 million of its own, working class people via the Holodomor). So it's no surprise that most in the West see Russia as vicious and/or untrustworthy. There is, of course, those like me who can see through the narrative but I also don't blame people from feeling the other way either.

The details of Romanov family life were great. That train wreck was crazy (!) how did the family survive it. I feel much obliged to congratulate the producers of this series. The quality of the scenes, the uniforms are excellent. Most of all the background sound is well in the background not like the modern rush-produced senseless films where the background sound drowns the narrator's words. I am glad that there still exist people willing to spend money on perfect productions. Perhaps someone in Netflix will see this comment. It does not all have to be sex on the kitchen table in scene1! A million times over thank you.

I love history. This is the best documentary on the Romanov's. I wonder if Nicholas II weren't Czar if the Romanov dynasty would have continued. History does offer someone an chance to imagine what might have happened if there had been a different Czar.
@floraposteschild4184
@floraposteschild4184 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe, but probably not. They all believed more or less that czarist autocracy was the order of God, and resisted any dilution of their powers. Prince Michael, Nicholas's younger brother and heir presumptive (after Alexei) was brighter, but "gullible and naive". He wasn't the person to pull Russia into the 20th century. This documentary doesn't say much about the conditions of the common people, but overall they were horrendous, as bad as 18th century France. And Russian industry and infrastructure was stuck in the 18th century too, although it was starting to attract foreign investment -- where the workers were treated like slaves. And the Duma was simply a "talk shop", because the czar could ignore it at his whim. And then there was World War I....
@ANPC-pi9vu
@ANPC-pi9vu 2 жыл бұрын
@@floraposteschild4184 Alexander didn't resist the dilution of power. He was working on creating a Parliamentary system when the socialists murdered him. Yeah, things were bad for some but changes don't happen over night, and the more that man gave them mercy, the more they hated him. Russia would have been better off if the revolution had been put down mercilessly. The rise of Communism only robbed the former serfs who managed to build successful farms and cottage industries of their lives through artificial famine and persecution. You'll notice that a lot of the revolutionaries were not in fact the working class they claimed they cared for, but lower nobility and intellectual types who really just wanted to seize power and fortune through theft. It's much like the leftists of today who use socialist and communist rhetoric to excuse their own failures while living comfortable latte liberal lives.

The end wasn't sad. This documentary tells mostly from the side of the Romanovs, not the Russian masses. There's a reason there was so much revolt and assassinations. The Russian Revolution brought in huge benefits for the people of Russia and despite Stalins counter revolution Russia was never again to suffer from the woes of tsarist regime. Good riddance to the Romanovs.

A lot of work went into this production. The Tsar before Nicholas II blew it. Instead of building on a democratic movement handed to him on a platter, he suppressed. And achieved short term productivity gains with apparent domestic peace. Only problem, the world had moved toward a better way -- democracy with or without a monarch. He created the environment for a revolution, and we are still paying for it. I lost friends in Vietnam because of Communism, and China is currently using AI to convert into a functional police state, albeit with capitalism to pay for it.

Democracy begun the era of total wars. Not of rivalries between monarchs, but of entire populations pitted genocidally against one another... not of conquest and dominion, but of obliteration via firebombing, gassing and nuclear annihilation. Americans didn't die in Vietnam because of Communism. Like in Iraq and Afghanistan, they died because 'Democracy" is even more totalitarian than the systems it replaced. Look now to the United Nations recent declarations of Populism as incompatible with Democracy for further demonstration that Democracy isn't the will of the people. It's merely the use of the 51% to oppress the 49%.

To the creators of this documentary thank you for making this. It's history that sometimes feels like its overlooked when people research the Romanovs. They were probably the most influential European royal family in history next to the Windsors. May they all rest easy knowing that Soviets collapsed and God and the Russian people prevailed. ☦️☦️☦️ Although, I have some minor issues for the ending surrounding Nicholas II I feel like a lot was overlooked in his reign that I felt should be brought up. He and Alexandra were avid cocaine users. None of the families charitable organizations were brought up. Nor was Nicholas II's schedule. I'm surprised no one brought up the fake Anastasia either.
