From the Director: "For this music video we didn't want to put a spin on the footage or the peoples lives-instead we wanted to re-tell and humanize their story. Lastly, I am moved to say when we completed the video we were able to preview it for some of the survivors of the Jonestown Massacre, who expressed their appreciation of our focus on the lives of the People's Temple members as opposed to exploiting the graphic images of the final tragedy. The lyrics go perfect with this video. The lyrics can have different meanings to whom you focus on. There are 4 different perspectives: Children, believers, the ones being held against their will, and Jim Jones. The last lyrics are "I think that you should wake up, I think I want to live my life and you're just in my way" The children to their parents, the believers to the non, the ones that want to leave the cult, and Jim Jones to the MEDIA. The video is so real it hurts my heart and brain.

The song "Go Outside" by Cults is a catchy indie pop tune that has a dark and sinister backstory. The song samples the voice of Jim Jones, the leader of the Peoples Temple cult, who orchestrated the mass murder-suicide of over 900 of his followers in Jonestown, Guyana, in 1978¹. The song's lyrics contrast the desire to go outside and enjoy life with the urge to stay inside and avoid reality. The song's music video, directed by Isaiah Seret, depicts the life of the cult members in Jonestown, with the band members playing the roles of the Jonestown band². The video also shows the final moments of the tragedy, when Jones ordered his followers to drink poisoned Kool-Aid². The song's meaning can be interpreted in different ways. Some might see it as a critique of religious oppression and blind faith, as Jones manipulated his followers into believing that death was preferable to living in a treacherous world. Others might see it as a metaphor for a toxic relationship, where one partner wants to break free from the other's control and negativity. The song could also be seen as a personal reflection of the band members' own struggles with depression and anxiety, as they expressed in interviews. The song's catchy melody and upbeat tempo contrast with its dark lyrics and theme, creating a sense of irony and tension. The song is a reminder that life is precious and should not be wasted on fear or misery. I think what I love about it, is not that it's glorifying Jim Jones, the event, or any ideology like that, it's taking a positive uplifting song and juxtaposing it to hungry souls who wished to emit that same positive energy even if it ended in tragedy. I think it's a positive way to acknowledge the tragedy while also taking lessons from it

The fact the editor made them look as there really there in Jonestown is phenomenal. Salute to the editor here fr. The clips that are real of Jonestown look great too. Now I don't think it's wrong like some people think it's bad they used the audio clip in bad things. It's a small clip and there name is cult. So that said it makes sense to have some music about Jonestown. And using a small what 10 or 5 sec Clip? So imo I understand where there views and way the songs are made and the goal of them. So I don't think.they are wrong fir the clip of audio in bad things nor the clips in this song and video.

Great art grabs one by the shoulder and shakes you. Hats off to Cults and the director, Isaiah Seret, who conceived of the idea. The action by Representative Ryan (RIP) and others who died (RIP) should not be forgotten. I do not think either the director or the group intentionally meant to stir up bad memories for the survivors. In fact Seret and the Director of the Jonestown archival footage formed a strong relationship. This is where zealots like Jim Jones lead us.

SmakoSmell Art is only distasteful when it intends to be; and even then, is it? By being distrustful the artist tries to send a message that transcends the original act.
