The far south coast of New South Wales was hard hit by last season’s bushfires, with over a thousand homes destroyed and native wildlife and forests devastated.
But over recent years, the region has also been home to a resurgence of the traditional practice of cultural burning, to heal the land and promote biodiversity.
For the first time since the bushfires, Indigenous crews across the region are conducting burns to protect valuable pockets of land and collaborating with private landholders to extend the potential of traditional fire management.
Produced in consultation with South Coast Aboriginal Elders, with footage supplied by James Patrick Photography. Thumbnail image by Gilliane Tedder.

It's way, way, way past time for the people who actually KNOW Australia, because of a 40-millenia history of living on and with the land, to be enabled to share their extremely valuable knowledge with the continent's more recently-arrived inhabitants.

The cultural burn is one of the most important things we need in terms of keeping the land healthy, productive and most importantly safe from the horrific fires that destroy everything in their path. If only the past and current government would listen. I am not for the voice, but I have known for many years having many aboriginal friend's, many classed as family that the control and care of our bushland should always have been in aboriginal hands. Not Government and big Corp. The first people's knowledge of the land is precious and should be preserved for ever and passed down to the new generation of aboriginal custodians so that there can never be a repeat of the horrific bush fires that raged across the land not so long ago. If the government had listened many of these disasters would not have happened.
