Culture Buzz: Bankhead Highway 100th Anniversary

People don't realize that the Bankhead Highway had a northern and southern route through Texas. The southern rout ran from Texarkana through Arlington and on to El Paso. The northern route entered the state from Oklahoma and then down through Turkey, Texas, where it then continued on through West Texas and ended up re-connecting with the southern route in El Paso.

John Hollis Bankhead was in born Moscow (now Sulligent), Alabama. I live in Sulligent about 1/2 mile from the Old Bankhead Home. The Bankhead Home is located on U.S. Hwy 278 which is part of the Bankhead Highway System. I am also a distant cousin of John Hollis Bankhead...
