I have a friend from Malaysia with beautiful bronze complexion. She visited me over the summer to go to a medieval festival. She got very self conscious of people looking at her and asked me if it was a racist thing. It’s really not. It’s because usually Czech people outside of Prague met on average maybe 5 non white persons in their entire live. It’s about someone looking exotic and we can’t just take our eyes away. I have to confess I caught myself sometimes doing it too and it’s not even a conscious thing.

Hello from Czechia. Czech people prefer to sit alone in busses or places for waiting just because they prefer bigger personal bubble. Normaly the people sitting togeather are people they know each other well. But if everywhere in the bus is a person siiitng in the place for two, they have to start to sit near the other one. Even for me as a Czech is sometimes funny to watch the system they are using to fill empty bus to turn it into a full one. And the watching you describe is more about curiosity because you are a little bit different and more - you are beautiful. So people just watching you but it has more to do with curiosity than with rasism. Yes, of course, there are some rasist here (and funny some of them are Czech just partly), but if you are good and working, you can bee even green here and there is nothing wrong. They will take you as theirs.

People here in Prague, although being the "most open ones from the Czech pack", are still quite shy in a typical "Central-European" way. This e.g. has much to do with the Czech people - and males especially - quite often not daring to sit next to an attractive woman on a tram, bus, train, you name it. Even less so when it comes down to an exotic (to us) attractive woman such as you. But, honestly, having seen your video which to me personally screams: "People of different backgrounds, let's interact, let's talk and let's get to know some interesting stuff 'bout each other!" just makes me want to have had met you on that tram. Cause I have so many questions!!!! And would be gladly answering even more of those if asked :). Wish you all the best, you beautiful human being :)
@Pidalin Жыл бұрын
Ofcourse I will not sit next to attractive woman when there are other seats, because when I do, someone could say I am some predator or something, men are really afraid of these things now, you have to be very careful, you are even scared to hold door for pretty girl or something, in some things, this time is really stupid. You don't have any bad thoughts, but you are still scared to help to pretty girl, it's ridiculous.

Im Hungarian living in Prg, so I enjoyed your video and observations, I am sorry for the racism you faced in Hungary. Hungarians are a very interesting group, you can see how conservative they are, this can be explained by the fear of unknown, we had a rough history, which seems like hard coded in our genes giving us the general grumpiness. We were not much exposed to different cultures in last centuries, also we dint have any language relatives, so we never really felt close with neighbouring nations, as part of Socialist block we were really encapsulated to caucasian culture, most people never seen a black person in their lives! I think it will take another 100 year to recycle the nation. I love Hungary, I am absolute proud to be Hun, I admire our hard work, lot of achievements, I find Hungarians warmer and much more family centric than Czechs, but life in Czech is simple easier, everything is there for you, in Hungary you need to deal with rough reality on daily basis.

Is it really that better here in Czechia? In last few years, I feel like it's getting worse, beggars and suspicious people who want something from you are bothering you more often than in the past and even because of ukrainian crisis, there is a lot of those "gopnik" with adidas tracksuits who carry knives because it's their culture. If you are in Prague, you should stay far from Florenc metro station and bus station after sunset, Ukrainians and Romanians have knife fights there often or some weird drug sellers are bothering you. At train stations, there are very often people who have crazy stories that they lost their wallets or something and they need money for train ticket back home and they will give something expensive to you for that money, like jacket or something, this is typical for Slovaks. Once I was stopped by a roma person (or let's say gypsy if you are ok with that) and he wanted money for train ticket to place where trains are not even going from Prague, so yes, Prague and Czechia generally is safe, but you still have to be careful and don't show your wallet in front of these suspicious weird people.

I would say it's everything about your luck what people you meet, I don't think there is a massive cultural difference between Czechs and Hungarians, some differences can be that Czechs are more liberal and don't care about what other people do, what is your religion etc....in public transportation, you can easily trigger unfriendly reaction by blocking door when peopel want to get out, which can cause confusion for foreigners who don't know this rule, no, people are not rude, from their point of view, you are rude by blocking door. You just have to follow few basic rules here in Czechia and everything is gonna be fine. It's true that Czechs are silent, it's rude here when you are loud, if you hear some loud people in bus or train or somewhere at street with some bottles of alcohol, it's a high propability that they are Ukrainians. 😀 We had a Hungarian guy in work and he was really loud, constantly yelling in that roma-like accent or how to call that, it's very annoying for a Czech person to hear all these accents which are loud and with up and down intonation, because it just sounds rude to us, but don't worry, peole (especially in Prague) are used to foreigners and there is a lot of black people, it's not like 20 years ago that kids were asking weird questions when they saw a black person, we have even black journalists and moderators in our TV. I was at medieval event at castle pretty far from Prague (like 2 hours by train) and there was a lot of black people, I saw minimaly 5 of them in such shithole far from Prague, so it's not special anymore to see a black person here, people are used to it, if someone stares at you, such people just stare at everyone. 😀 Native people from Prague don't look at timetables that often if it's not weekend, you just wait untile your tram or bus comes and when you miss your tram or bus, you mostly go to next station because we just hate waiting. Eating and drinking at street....this is typical for "gastronomical barbarians" which Czechs definitely are, you can see this culture even in USA, probably even in UK and some other countries, Czech Republic is one of them, for most of people, food is just something they need and they have no time to sit in some restaurant, especially when you have 30 minute break in work and ofcourse many people like to walk and enjoy their coffe on move, which some nations just don't do.

I don't like acronyms, but I will still express myself, even though I realise that it is a generalisation and a subjective view. The behaviour of the Hungarians is based on their history. Since Hungary was great in history and the Hungarians controlled other nations and nationalities, and they lost that territory and influence after the First World War, they still feel humiliated, even though none of them remember it anymore. They still feel that they are something more than they really are, and unfortunately they are ruled by a populist, I am not afraid to say a dictator who confirms them. Everything bad that happens to the Hungarians is caused by external forces, the EU, NATO, neighbouring countries. Only they are not to blame. It is tragic for the older generation, because even under communism they could not travel, but how the young have it, I don't quite know. Anyway, it is sad that the Hungarians lack self-reflection. It is not as bad as in Russia, but they are close to reaching a similar level. So this behaviour towards foreigners is the logical outcome of their thought processes.
