I went to Berlin when I was 16 (I'm French) and was actually surprised by how helpful the locals were. I was totally lost at some point in a busy square, started unwrapping my map and all of a sudden two Germans came to help me. Another time, I was looking for a street, asked a man who was obviously on his way to work, he actually did more than help me and walked to the destination. To sum up, I don't really feel like I lived the "Berliner Schnauze" experience, even if the bus drivers may not have been the most polite. Anyway, Berlin war geil! Eine schöne Erinnerung!

I had the most memorable experience in Berlin 😅 it kind of went from extreme rudeness (mainly from clerks in restaurants and shops 😞 ) to the most surprising acts of kindness from some Berliners who gave us a hand carrying our bags up the stairs of the subway or random passers who, without me asking, helped us get by in the streets of Berlin 😊 Thank you!! those little random acts of kindness sure made it up for all the bad moments we had. 😊💕💕

A few summer's back I was traveling through Berlin for a few days and didn't have clothes warm enough for the sudden rain which started dumping. I didn't have a ton of extra money so I went to a flea market to buy something cheap to keep myself warm. One man with his pile of clothes for sale just gave me a sweater for free. I was so grateful and he was just kind of like, "Yeah, it's nothing, I don't care." hahaha his attitude did not feel rude at all, I liked it, and also loved Berlin.

I think this mentality of Berliners are a North European thing. In Danish, a perfect response to «schmeckt es?» would literally be «I can suffer it». But the Danes don't mean anything bad by saying it.

On the contrary, the first time I went to Berlin, some 30 years ago (when Google Maps didn't exist), I only knew a little bit of german so, when I took a bus to some place, I asked the driver "Sprechen Sie english?". As he said "Ein bisschen", I asked him, in english, to help me getting where I wanted to go. He just told me to stay near the front door so he could advise me when I should leave the bus. So he did and I thought that, although he was not very friendly, he solved my problem very efficiently.

I've been living in Germany (Frankfurt-Munich) for almost two years. And I can honestly say that so many German people mix-up directness and rudeness. These kind of behaviour is called simply "rude" in so many countries, not "direct".
@javi8714
@javi8714 4 жыл бұрын
Merve Bas Noone who grew up with it, would feel it that way. In fact, some culture of speaking around what you want to say actually, is seen as VERY DISHONEST by many Germans. (though the Berlinians a very known to be rude (in a funny way) even in Germany)

Matter of culture. In some cultures it is considered rude to say no. Not very helpful when you require a yes or no answer.
@cosmicreciever

I would agree with you, deliberately focusing on the syntax of a sentence and disregarding the obvious semantics for no good reason isn't being direct. I can tolerate abruptness and directness when it is still helpful, but when it is deliberately unhelpful then it is simply rude.

(native berlin guy) ^^ this is what berlin mentality is all about!! We're just making fun of each other. friendly insulting and complaining is like a craft learned from an early age. as a small kid you're completly overwhelmed when the owner of the bikeshop is super unfriendly. But as you grow older you learn how to deal with those kind of people^^ by distracting them back with a fitting conter. beim Amt: A) ich hätte gerne einen Termin B) dit wollen viele A) ick bin aber ne "viele" -- easy and slightly rude answer that would ease the situation^^ but unfortunately all the people who moved in don't understand the fun and take everything super seriously ... I got a lot of those kind of situation when I was attending university. Grüße aus Japan

I'm Canadian but lived in Berlin for a year and this is so accurate. In Canada, we have cultural politeness and are hardly ever as honest or abrupt, especially to people we don't know. I thought most Germans would be cold at first but after meeting many other Germans from all over Germany, I realized that Berliners have a much different culture. However, it is true that once a Berliner gets to know you and once you engage in conversations, including debates of religion/politics, if you stand your ground, Berliner will respect you. After this, I have some incredible friends from Berlin who are still my friends today and they are very loyal. I say to others that all you need to do is stand your ground, don't take the comments too seriously and go out of your way to get to know people and you'll be fine. Berliners are a really amazing people like most people from Germany in my opinion.

I experienced this more when I was a teenager living as a German in Berlin in the 1970s--not very nice when you are already insecure about everything at that age. Every decade, Berliners have become more friendly and helpful. Maybe they have changed and maybe I have. I have also lived in America for a long time, so coming back, I may be treated a little bit like a visitor.

Now, after some years getting used to it and learning my own phrases, I absolutely love it. I don't know if I could live anywhere else in Germany.

That German was probably terrible because I’m learning and didn’t want to use a German translator. The people I’ve interacted with all just seem busy. If you don’t have your stuff together then they have little patience. If you are prepared, try to speak and understand German, and know a bit about what you’re trying to do, that goes a long way with them. But you almost always have a crusty greeting. I think it is good for many Americans to toughen up a bit, emotionally, anyway. 😜

(In North America, I am so used to the Downtown concept-so zu sagen : ) Ich schaute bloß zurück auf seinem Gesicht, denke ich.

I found the "mentality" just rude, justifying something that is considered rude in almost everywhere in the world doesn't make people feel better about it or even- as you guys intended- understand that culture. Though i love you guys and appreciate all the effort, well done and keep up with the great work.

Shohreh Farahi As someone who grow up in Berlin, I dont see it as rude. If someone says something „strange“, you just smile and say something back. and then usually the ice is broken and everyone is nice

But I think that how they have been since a long time ago if we want them to change thats rude too we can only accept it as their culture its up to them whether they want to represent their culture like that or not

Most people in Berlin were extremely kind and helpful when I asked them for directions/help, except for one guy who got into the same elevator as me. I asked him are you going up or down and he said something like "both, can't you see that I'm a bat?". Sounds funny but his tone and facial expression just conveyed rudeness and aggressiveness. Anyway, there are rude people in every country, so I can't really complain about Germany in particular.

I experienced scene two when I was in Berlin, when I tried to buy a monthly ticket at a BVG place in Alexanderplatz. Scene one I had the pleasure to be introduced to by to very old ladies, who were very annoyed behind me at a queue while I tried to buy a ticket for the train. Very pleasant people, I should say. And last, I also got kicked out of a WG, having to pay 85 euros for 5 nights at the middle of Lichtenberg, before finally taking a train to Munich at the end of my trip to Germany.

OMG !! Thanks Cari for inviting Emanuel. So this is Emanuel. The best of him is that he writes bilingual with his perfect English. So, about the second scene, we have too here in my country mostly in government office, public service. Most of time ends up with asking money to make it run smoothly :( but now is getting better, more transparent. I had a strange experience in Lübeck. I was with my German friend in a famous store. He showed me various kinds of candies/food with his pointing finger. The candies/food are wraped up neatly. We did not touch them. Suddenly a tall German woman came to him and said that he shouldn't have touched those things, with a kind of harsh voice. Then my friend shouted at her. As i didn't aware of what was going on, i asked him why he shouted. He just answered :" Nothing, just a bad German." I was a bit confused till now. Are Germans like this woman ?? :(

Perfect English? Uhm... that's a bit too much :). But yeah, that's me. As for the woman... no, that was nothing specifically German. Maybe they have a no touch policy in that store and she just enforced it.
