Jackie's wardrobe is timeless. The overall effect is simple. There were no added frills or details. Lines are straight & unadorned. Jackie had a rather odd body almost masculine. She was relatively flat chested, thin, large hands & feet, wide shoulders. The dresses did not draw attention but presented a symmetrical line to the body. The genius lay in the beautiful materials, hair designs, gloves & wraps she often used.

These images have so much emotional impact for me. I was in high school when JFK was elected President and I absolutely idolized Jackie in her role as First Lady. She served her country well with such beauty and grace. She also decided the frumpy furnishings in the White House needed a do over and then she proudly gave a televised tour. When she and JFK took their triumphant European tour (in a day and age when Europe was so distant for most Americans), she caused a sensation wearing some of these very gowns. Thank you for this lovely look back!

I thoroughly enjoyed this look at the "Jacqueline Kennedy phenomenon". I had just turned 4 when JFK was elected. I remember vividly how classy and beautiful that (way too short) era looked. My mother even on her miniscule budget wore the styles so strikingly. My Barbie doll wore the Jackie look, along with the knee length bouffant dresses. What seems to have disappeared forever is the idea of people looking neat, tidy and put-together. Even looking at photos of family picnics you see men, women and children looking so attractive and tidy. Yes, Mama spent HOURS at the ironing board to keep her 4 kids looking this way, but the result was so well worth it.

I think the only criticism I heard of Jackie was that she married Onassis. Her.mission with the White House was to bring it back to the state of beauty it deserved. She went into the country's storehouse or storehouses of past presidents, closing the best things possible. She cajoled friends and family into donation items of beauty to the furnishing of the White House. I just wish I had Bern able to tour it with my mother and grandmother who would have been able to truly appreciate her work. She was more than the elegant lady in elegant clothing.

The pink suit with navy blue details and collar the first lady wore was a Chanel suit. There is a roumor saying that Cassini copied Givenchy-garments; in fact, if you researched fr the style of Balenciaga and Givenchy (being always very similar), you would find some concepts of them, f.e. a lean dress with moderately wide skirt an a short, wider Jacket or top above. Last, but not least, there were quite well-known couturiers in the US, at least well known in both Americas: Mainbocher or Charles James, among others.

I was no Jackie Kennedy, but I carried myself as if I were. She was the best style role model of that model era …and any respectable retailer had something that a young wife could afford. When he was a young man, and fortune-teller at the fair said that he would not marry the woman he was engaged to but the engagement would be broken off, he would be forced to travel across the ocean, and he would marry two famous women, but he fame would outshine theirs. He laughed it off, but then that is exactly what happened. And it is very tragic that his first daughter was exposed to German Measles in the womb, and she had to be institutionalized her whole life.
