Here is an in-depth look at culturing blackworms and daphnia. I have learned how to culture these, live foods through trial and error.

Awesome ideas. I was going to do this with daphnia and blackworm. Good to know that you are successful.

Dear Keith Koch: The method I used in 2018 is inferior to the method I currently use: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYurq5iuYrSfn8k Collecting blackworms from a 5-gallon bucket is easy. Just remove the air-stone and let the culture sit for a while. The worms will collect on the open space on the bottom of the bucket and you can remove them with a turkey baster. Thank you for your support and lovely comment. I wish you all the best with your, aquarist hobby and YouTubing. Please show us your aquaria, on your Channel, if you like. I’ll subscribe and hit the notification bell. Sincerely, Brinegar

OK, but don't feed blackworms any, fish food. Just keep them going, on brown paper (without glue or toner). You might add plant clippings. But, if you add fish food, blackworm cultures will sour, very quickly.

Any idea where to get a good supply both to start a culture but also for live food as the culture progresses.

Dear Big Dipper: Search for blackworms (Lumbriculus variegatus) and Daphnia magna on Amazon and eBay. Otherwise, check local, pet stores. Thank you for your interest and lovely comment. I wish you all the best with your, aquarist hobby. Sincerely, Brinegar

@@ejbrinegar thank you so much for the info. In Florida things have been getting worse with both a flu and covid delta spreading fast. I'm trying to build out a fish room while I try to rebuild some if the house from a tornado that hit last year. At my age I can't get out much so I'm just trying to feel a little human. Thank you again, even doing cultures is better than vegging into space, lol I really enjoyed the knowledge you offered us in your video and thank you for your direction.

@@ejbrinegar E.J. I'm confused also as I've never posted a video. So, I'm lost. It will take me some time to rebuild the house and then add a completed fish room but after I'll try to get something up. It going to be a while though, maybe 6 mo. To a year before I can get it all done.

Dear Sir: This is a link to the video on your, KZbin Channel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fp2ne4WNZbJ_e7s I would delete it, since you didn’t post it. If you don’t have an aquarium, at the moment, you might visit your, local pet store and shoot a video of their stock and supplies (with their permission, of course). That’s always of interest to the FishFam Community. You can also introduce yourself and tell us your plans for building a fish-room and culturing live foods. In addition, some aquarists, like Chris, gather clips from social media related to the hobby and comment on them: kzbin.info/door/7FGRFoYxaTk5CTQ4WTtJOg I’ll be watching for notifications, in case you post something. There’s no pressure, but I highly recommend YouTubing. Sincerely, Brinegar P.S. May I know your name?

Dear Raliegh: I have a much better way to catch blackworms, now. I keep them in a 5-gallon bucket, with an air-stone. The brown paper substrate doesn’t cover the entire bottom of the bucket. About an hour after removing the air-stone, many of the blackworms will congregate on the bare part of the bottom of the bucket. At that point, it is a simple matter to collect them with a turkey baster, without having to deal with detritus. Thank you for your, continued support. All my best, Sincerely, Brinegar

Dear Sherry Jarecki: Yes, I shot this video when I was new to blackworms. I’m much better at it, now. My, best culture is in a 5-gallon bucket with an airstone. I keep blackworm cultures alive, mainly on brown paper. I add fish food (very sparingly) to the culture in the bucket. The cultures in the jars almost never get fish food so water changes are not needed, very often. But, I also culture Daphnia magna in the jars. Adding green water and yeast cause them to multiply, quickly. Here is a better video on culturing Daphnia and blackworms: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYurq5iuYrSfn8k Thank you for your interest and lovely comment. I wish you all the best in your, aquarist hobby. Sincerely, Brinegar P.S. I watched your Corydoras aeneus mating. I had never seen that. Thank you for posting it. Did the eggs hatch? I’m not sure how they are fertilized. I was under the impression that the female inseminates them with milt she has collected from the male. Since she did mouth the eggs after placing them on the glass, they may have been fertilized.
