As an Atheist, I think most religious people who say they would rape and murder if they were not religious really think that is the case but they really wouldn't. Belief is often times a reflection of their true values because it otherwise wouldn't "resonate" with them. Many people who deconverte are still the same person, they just learn a whole new way of viewing themselves and discover this higher morality
@MrsLyraGyrl Жыл бұрын
Whenever I hear a religious person say that without "God" what's stopping you from doing bad things, I find it so disturbing. For example, if the only thing stopping you from doing bad things is the fear of retribution from a deity, what kind of person does that make you? Both my husband and I were raised in the church. Me a non-denominational Church of Christ - very loving, no "hell and damnation" talk, mostly be a good person and be good to others. Oppositely, my husband grew up in an abusive Jehovah's Witness church, which is probably why Im agnostic and he's atheist. Our children have been mostly raised without religion, and we are constantly praised on how well behaved and kind they are. We are secular homeschoolers and are part of a secular homeschool co-op where the kids attend classes taught by parents every week. I just got through teaching 2 5-week units to the middle-high schoolers for linguistics and anthropology. There were so many concepts that were foreign to my students, like peer pressure, bullying, and "at-risk" behavior. I found it so heartening that they didn't experience these things, but sad that there are so many children who are too familiar with them. Many of them are experiencing it within their religion.

Yeah, the urge to R or murder people shouldn't be there in the first place. Im Christian and there are things I can think of that I'd probably do if I didn't believe in God, but minor things. If someone has urges to assault people, well... Idk, hopefully they continue believing in God,keep themselves in line and stay away from their preferred victims

I am a foster/trauma mom. That whole conversation about developmental stages is 100% true. People tend to peak at the developmental level they are supported appropriately through. So a physical 18yo can’t be and often is kind of ‘stuck’ @ 14 mentality.

@@CultstoConsciousness Both of your channels are amazing & beyond enlightening!! I have family out in Utah, specifically a whole lot of cousins, who are Mormon. We were never really allowed to communicate with them while I was growing up. Their parents acted like they didn’t have extended family anywhere else, and we actually have a big family. I’ve only just started talking to a couple of those cousins recently, & I don’t like to ask them a lot of questions. Not yet anyway. You guys give me a lot of info that helps me understand some things better. IDK exactly what sect or group they’re from exactly, but just listening to you guys makes me feel closer to them :) That means so much to me 💯❤️ I remember being absolutely in shock when my mom told me that my one cousin, who I had met once when we were 8, & we had actually written a few letters to one another over the years, had gotten married, and was expecting her 1st baby. Like totally shocked! I remember it like it was yesterday, cuz we were the same age- 16 years old 🫣 Since then, I’ve been so interested & almost ‘facsinated’ w/ that side of my family, and cults in general, especially since my mom had explained a little bit of it to me, & about why I couldn’t talk to her anymore...they didn’t want any more letters from exchanged :( Anyhow…so sorry about my tangent there lol I totally digressed! You both are extremely brave & raw & real, and I’m also so glad you guys found each other, cuz bouncing off of each other, comparing experiences, etc, totally ‘ups’ the level of interesting! Just on the bit of talk about missions, I was reminded something that happened just a few days ago. Now, I am Italian, and most Italian curse like it's nothing, and we literally curse and insult God, the Holy Mary, the saints in bulk and one by one, and also the former kings and queens of Italy with all forms of insults. I have heard, trust me, priests cursing (mildly) because to most of (especially in some regions) us it's like saying "Oh, heck!" or "Dang it!" So, I was getting on a train because I had to go to the place where I had to teach, and the door didn't open. I pushed and pulled it until it flew open with a crack and a quick but loud curse on my side because I was exhaling hard due to the effort of pulling the cursed door open. And sitting right two rows in front of me a couple of Mormon missionaries, who were deep in conversation in English dropped silent and looked up becoming of all the colours of the rainbow. Well, sorry guys, and welcome to Italy.

I went to a ward that had a wonderful bishop when my family first converted to Mormonism, and the bishop was never intrusive like that, but then he moved, and the new bishop was a full on sexual predator. his questions, his speech, his habit of putting his hand on your knee when talking to you, it was just icky. when i rebuffed his questions in a bishop meeting, he decided to take issue with my body, he directed the young women's leadership to police my clothing- im fat, and a fat girl with boobs stuck out so much from the other girls (slim, meek, swet little ladies), they thought they could pound me down with disapproval... i peaced out with both middle fingers up. i had many friends in the church that i left behind, and the guilt sucked, but i was way to independent for the brainwashing to do its work. But shout out to Bishop Cardon, he was a good man, and led as bishop with good examples and the best intentions. His replacement was just a total POS, with the full support of the church, so i had to dip out.

I love the stages of moral development - so many people in cults or religious fundamentalist groups stop at stage 1! It really shows itself when you get those people who say "Oh atheists have no morals because they don't have the Bible telling them they'll be punished for doing bad things.", thinking they're being morally superior - meanwhile everyone who's developed past toddler level is looking at them with horror like "The ONLY reason you don't do bad things is fear of punishment!?"

What is the best way to hide anything you don't want seen or heard about ? Of course its in the one place that everybody over looks 'The Church' I always believe that you DON'T have to go to church to be religious or have faith ! After all if you know the story of the Bible 'Jesus' didn't preach from a church ,he preached from a mountain top or outside in the open ! The true Christians are NOT in churches ,but they are the homeless people and the poor people ,the everyday people who go over looked :) Please keep these videos coming because they are highly rewarding and knowledgeable !

Omg. I just accidentally recited the young women's thing with Shelise. I bailed from Mormonism when I was 17. I'm 45. The more I hear about other cults, especially fundamentalist/polygamist Mormon sects, the more they are the same. It would give every believing Mormon I know apoplectic fits, but they are a hell of a lot more simular than they are different. PS. I'm a big ol' polytheistic/poly-spiritual witch now. I am CURIOUS about culty tendencies within neo-Pagan/Wiccan groups. I have shied away from them because of toxicity.

Mormonism is an offshoot of Judaism. It’s sounds just like Ultra-Orthodox Judaism! These cults are protected by everyone in power. I’m a descendant of Arron, the first High Priest of Israel. Ancient knowledge of the Priesthood is passed down orally because the code of secrecy. It’s real magic and women and men were sent out to all the nations. Girl, I can’t share the shit I know. It’s a literal death sentence. I’m serious. And you’re doing the right thing staying away from New Age witch circles. Most don’t know what they’re doing and there are serious consequences for primordial power. Many of us practice solitary unless we need to get together for some Arcane work. I’ve got serious power that true energy vampires want to draw from. Most of these groups are tapping into your God power and pulling it from you to use as they see fit. Some don’t know they’re doing this, but many do.

Weird thing is that being raised up in a nice family with supportive parents can make you also vulnerable and naive in relationships - like even if you are aware of boundaries and a theoretical idea of what is a toxic or unsuitable partner, you are just also very trusting and willing to work on yourself to make it work or even wanting to support the person and help them became better - because that's what people do for each other, right? I literally had no behavioral patterns how to deal with the actual living person before me, even though I had a rational background of common advice and was analyzing it over and over. I don't want to condone the toxicity of the cults relationships, I just wanted to add that from my experience the "what if" of coming from non-cult good family (in a non-sarcastic meaning) might have not saved you from toxic relationship either... but maybe you would have been able to end it sooner, just because of the awareness that that was the option.

You've talked about the medical care side of things in some of your interviews, but what I'm really curious about is the social side, specifically around work. Order kids are expected to start working really young, so what happens when they can't work because of disabilities? Are they taught that being unable to work will send them to hell? Are they shunned or sent away? And similarly, how are people who become disabled and unable to work treated?

Y'all really touched on an issue I have with religion in general, now I was raised southern baptist and my family is still quite religious. I questioned religion and later denounced it quietly, when I was around age 13 and realized I was bi and could not personally reconcile what I'd been taught about gay people according to the religion I grew up in(on the same level as murderers and rapists etc). In some discussions about religion with my mom after that, she basically said the only reason to be a good person or to not do things to hurt other people or murder people is because of God and I vehemently disagree with that. I think it's really sad if someone needs a threat of eternal damnation to just be a good person who doesn't try to hurt others. Incidentally also why The Good Place is one of my favorite TV shows ever because it isn't necessarily religion based but it asks a lot of philosophical questions like that. That doing good things for the promise of moral dessert, a reward at the end of the rainbow, doesn't necessarily make you a good person because of your intentions. If you are interested in those kinds of philosophical things definitely check it out because honestly it was healing for me, and also of course entertaining.

Just a little note, some of us don't have to sow our wild oats once we're empty nesters. Even if we were married young. A person can be happy to only have had experienced intimacy with one single person their entire life. I'm curious why people find it important to have sex with multiple partners.... The only one I can understand is if you've had terrible partners emotionally, mentally or physically. I'm curious why people can't explore and grow with one partner.... So much of intimacy is communication and trust, Not the physical act of sex.

59:34 prayer can be meditation but is not the same. For example a rosary is a meditative prayer in the catholic church because as you're praying you're contemplating the Bible stories from mysteries of the rosary. A daily prayer is not necessarily meditation since you're not really focusing or thinking that deeply about anything.

Wonderful show. Thank you so much. My brother said that the women are so beautiful that he's thinking of joining a cult.(I'm never sure whether he's joking or not.) Did Amanda appear in a documentary? If so, could someone please tell me which one? Thank you again. I love 'Cults to Consciousness' and Amanda's channel. Brilliant women.

Not sure about documentaries, but I do know she ran a TV show with her sisters called Escaping Polygamy years ago.

@aznmochibunny Thank you so much, I probably misunderstood.

Haha 😂 not gonna lie, Utah is known for “pretty people”. They generally all look alike. I’m less common with dark hair and brown eyes. Yes, Escaping Polygamy!

@CultstoConsciousness Thank you so much. Many couples look alike. Obviously, you and your husband don't look alike except your smiles. The way you smile into each other eyes is so wonderfully uplifting that I have to smile along with you. You really do appear the ideal partnership. I also love watching you and Amanda Rae spark off each other. You are both beautiful and very naughty girls that I can't help but laugh out loud. I teach philosophy at university, and I would love to wear a 'Don't Boink Your Sister' T-shirt. My students would get a kick out of it. Where can I buy one? My first year at university, I had a Mormon girlfriend, and my mates didn't believe what I told them about her shenanigans. I honestly thought that she would suffocate me one night. As you have pointed out, years of sexual repression can have startling repercussions, lol.Thank you again for your wonderful channel. PS. Your husband looks exhausted. Please be gentle with him, lol.

Not to say Shanell was abusive in any way from this comment but a small woman can in fact abuse a large man. Women can hit punch attack same as a man. And not all men feel comfortable defending themselves. The idea that a small woman can’t be physically abusive keeps men from coming forward. So it’s not really a good message to push.

Not to mention any size woman can be mentally and emotionally abusive. It's just as or more damaging.

That explanation would be for religion vs a true relationship with Jesus Christ vs being in a cult. The infilling with the Holy Spirit would rival Culttoconsciousness aiawaska weekend high.

I’m curious if your husband (Shelise) has any opinions of the Catholic religion due to his upbringing? I have my own Catholic experience.

He wasn’t raised strict so he didn’t buy into it much. We are going into Catholicism next on our channel!

I’m way behind and didn’t comb the comments for this, so forgive me if it’s already been said…the verb you were looking for was blespheme. One who blasphemes is a blasphemer. The word blasphemist is auto-corrected to blasphemous (the adjective). All these are according to a Google search, so take that for what it’s worth. And now that I have typed all this, all blapsh + anything sounds unreal.
