The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is a National Historic Landmark that moves. At 64-miles in length, it is the longest, the highest and most authentic Narrow Gauge steam railroad in North America, traveling through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Rocky Mountain West. I love this railroad and have had the good fortune to ride it a few times. For a minimal charge they will drop you off at Cumbres Pass where the CDT crosses and saves from parking your vehicle in such a remote spot. This brought back memories. Thanks ✌

It’s a must place to visit. Chama is one of my homes away from home. We like to go in the fall in time to do trail magic and shuttle SBO CDT hikes back and forth from the pass and town.

That's awesome Jerry. I bet you've been to the Chama Days festival then. Do you remember Viva Vera's Mexican Restaurant ? From Cumbres Pass to Blue Lake, around to Conejos Falls, to Platoro, then road walk to Green Lake trailhead and back to Cumbres Pass has always been my all-time favorite. It's cool talking to someone who knows that area. That doesn't happen often.@@tangenttrails

@@BluecollarBackcountry I've not been to Chama Days. We're usually there the last of May or September/October, too early or late. I can't say I've ever ate at Vera's Kitchen. My favorite place to eat, for breakfast and lunch is Fina's Diner ' I love Josephine's 3 and 4 pound breakfast burritos and her Huevos Rancheros. You gotta try her recipes. Best green chiles around although the cook at Homerun Pizza cooks up some pretty spicy meals. There's a new BBQ place that opened a couple of years ago right next to the railroad wye, Outlaw BBQ. Good eattin' there. You gotta know the system when new to town and looking to eat in Chama due to the odd ball restaurant hours.😏

Quite well. The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad uses some amazing and cool narrow gauge 2-8-2 “Mikado” steam locomotives right over here. Denver & Rio Grande Western 168 (Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1883), 315 (Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1895), 463 (Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1903), 483, 484, 487, 488, and 489 (All built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1925), 492, 494, 495, and 497 (All built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1902, originally as standard gauge 2-8-0 “Consolidation” steam locomotives until 1928 to 1930).
