Great video!Just picked up a 2003 Cummins myself about a month ago, already put a Caterpillar fuel filter and Baldwin water separator on and looking to put a Amsoil oil bypass filter on soon. I would love a video on redoing head gasket.

The GUNK DEGREASER has been around for YEARS and it works GREAT...I use the original not the Gel......I'm 67 and was using GUNK in my Teens and Still use.....It has a Odor to it so use it away from wherever you don't want it to Stink......But I kind of like the Smell

I have a 03 HO manual with one of the very first Smarty S-04 models I bought back in 2006 and have never had a problem with boost. Stock turbo or Silverbullet at 42psi.

@@Gixzer04 No reason to check as the only way to get the NV-5600 six speed manual diesel transmission was with the HO engine.

@@Sir.VicsMasher perhaps I’m referring to the 04.5 HO motor. My truck was manufactured in 8/03 has the nv5600 in it but is not rated at the same HP as the 04.5 that had an additional 25hp. Mine is 305hp and that’s the same across the board. Yea they are rated higher than the automatic but it doesn’t make it an HO motor. Wasn’t until 04.5 that the option of a high output was even available so…..

Nice video. I just put on a fleece cheetah turbo and been getting this code. I figured some sort of code would come up since the new turbo doesn't have a boost fooler solenoid. I was running my stock turbo limited at 42 psi for about a year because I didn't do head studs yet and never had any problems.

I am running a little bigger turbo , with out a wast gate , or that part of it , running stock injectors , & no converter , 4 or5” pipe , had a problem with return line , pin hole , it caught fire 2 times . The first time I had help putting the fire out , cooked some wires , the second time it put the fire out it self . Need a set of used wires for 1997 or 98 3500 Dodge , has a heave duty torqueconfter , sorry for spelling . Need a pyro so I don’t melt piston . I used to drive my big truck , it had been tuned all ready ,it was small cam 350 , it put 400 to the ground , they didn’t come with wast gat, that truck did me well . My 3500 has also a Fast pump on it all so , let me me know what you think ?

i have 03 cummins with the smarty s06 and never had that problem .. also when buying the smarty from thoroughbred diesel it says right on the product paged for our trucks the smarty does not have boost fooling..ive been running it over 2 years on level 5-7-9 with NO issues .. but right now I'm only getting about 32-33 psi . I've been thinking about getting a boost fooler & boost elbow to see how much for psi i can make .. oh i also have fass150 & fresh CP3K .. thanks for the video

+Brian Lau that's weird because when I called Smarty they said it should boost fool on our early trucks and when I said it doesn't work they were no help in fixing the problem. I've had it on my truck for almost two years also with no issues except boost fooling which didn't start until I put a boost elbow on and then my new he351ve turbo. Thanks for watching!

+Brian Lau with my HE351VE turbo setup I can get well over 40 psi if I keep my foot in it. But with a stock motor I have to modulate the pedal to keep it right at 40 and not go over 1200* egt.

Just got a boost fooler for my 04 today bc my smarty sr isn’t fooling at all I’ll throw the code at 3/4 throttle everytime. Also how do you run your smarty through the edge?

its your waste gate that not letting you boost all the way. i just put a vice grip on the hose for the waste gate and see if you get full boost. i did that on my 2000 dodge. before i only got 33 psi after doing that i get 42.

Is this a stock turbo. It seem my 2003 only puts out about 26 psi and that is with my foot in it. I seen some modes to the little elbow coming off the turbo that looks like it would help. It has an edge juice turner and 50 over stock injectors. I generally pull a large 5th wheel in the mountains with it. Just looking for a little more going up those steeper hills.

I think at the time of this video I had the stock turbo on with a boost elbow like you were talking about. 25-26 lbs is pretty normal for a stock setup even with fueling upgrades. Anything over that and a fault code will pop up. Now I run a turbo off the new 6.7 Cummins with the variable exhaust vanes.

I’d still recommend the Smarty even though it didn’t “boost fool” properly for me. But as you saw it’s an easy fix. Just be careful with your stock trans as higher power levels will toast it fairly easy

So I’m looking at one for my 2003 5.9 but I’m only seeing 24 lbs max boost stock with smarty jr tuner. Any thoughts on what to do? Also where does this boost elbow thing people keep talking about?

That's strange, I'm running the SmJr in my 03 Cummins and the boost fooling works fine. I have never had a code with the SmJr.

I'm still stock and I get about 34 PSI out of it but when I'm towing I back out of it a bit and try not to maintain anything over 30. It's only that high when I'm climbing mountain passes. Without SmJr or a boost elbow it was 25~26 psi.

Its because the truck was in turbo overboost which defuels the engine. That’s the whole reason I installed the boost fooler. Make higher boost and keep the fueling where it should be.

I have an 03 as well. did you try turning the wastegate option to "off"? I've heard that on the 03's it activates boost fooling.

+BAMBAM359 I did have the wastegate setting to off and still did not boost fool. I even called Smarty and asked and they said they had no idea it should boost fool but had no suggestions to help me. Thanks for watching!

I son't think that setting would have any impact on an 03 because it's a purely mechanical wastegate.

No I have not done head studs. Steed Dolan who I bought the stand alone controller from says truck pull guys run this same setup and get up to around 50 psi. Then blow the turbo up. 40 psi is around the max out of this turbo and my engine with no studs. Stock 6.7 might be different because the computer still controls the vgt function and limits it to keep it safe. By the way I'm running a HE351vgt just like you have in your 2012.

The “elbow” is the pipe coming out of your intake manifold where your dipstick would be mounted on top of.

The elbow is connected to your intake manifold, it turns downward to connect to the intake hose coming from the intercooler. In this video its bright red. This one is an aftermarket Banks elbow that has a smooth continuous bend and is larger than stock which yields greater and smoother airflow vs the stock elbow which is smaller and has very boxy harsh angles and turns.

Smarty does boost fool I build 43 psi on stock turbo no external boost fooler

I have a Smarty Jr S-06 on level 3 (100hp) and don't see anywhere near 43 pounds on my 07 5.9. More like 34 psi, just like it did stock. You can get 40 with a boost fooler and Smarty Jr, but not 43 with an otherwise stock truck.

@@moodberry I sold the 07 shortly after I posted above, then got an 06 with less miles on it. Tried the boost fooler on it, and it kept throwing a code so took it off. Honestly I didn't think it was worth it. As I stated, I never saw above 34lbs boost on either one. I think the big thing is it supposed to make it spool up quicker.

getblowd407 its a truck issue, not a computer issue. The 03-04.5 you have to adjust your wastegate because its not electronically actuated like the later 3rd gens. When you do that, the truck will over boost and throw that code. You need the boost fooler so it tells your truck ecm its not boosting to boost anywha

It just stays on 99 as a default. I do all the tuning through the Smarty not the Edge display
