Have you noticed low fuel economy, higher Exhaust Gas Temperatures, or an overall decrease in power? Well, you might have a boost leak like I did!
This is Laraine - my 2006 Ram 2500 with the 5.9 Cummins. She's done a lot of heavy hauling, but I started to experience all of the issues that I listed. After a lot of testing and researching, I finally ordered a boost leak tool and got to work. I was surprised at how quick and easy it was to find this boost leak with the correct tool.
The best part is, this tool will work on pretty much any diesel with a 4" turbo intake!
Today I'll show you how I tested for boost leaks using the tool from KCTurbos (link below). Let's roll up our sleeves and get to work!
Although this did not fix my (very) high EGT issue, it did improve my fuel economy and brought my horsepower back up to where I remembered it being! The EGT issue ended up being just a bad ground on the sensor.

Cap your charge air pipe at the intake manifold. It isolates your test only to the charge air system piping.

Hey I did that started my truck and sprayed some soapy water on my CAC found two small leaks on each top corner, I had 32 to 35psi before now I only get 20psi nothing higher, can that be enough to reduce boost pressure? Thanks in advance.
@BerkinParlakay
@BerkinParlakay 2 жыл бұрын
@@ER_666_ a tiny boost leak is bad, especially since higher the pressure the higher velocity of air escaping. a boost leak at all will negatively effect the performance of your vehicle. a vehicle at 30 psi without a boost leak will perform better than a vehicle at 30 psi with a boost leak, even if it reads pressure. you have to make sure that motor seals

I had a thought, what if you added oil to the boost side of the intake manifold before shutting it off brier to the test to seal the rings? Just for kicks. I wonder how much blow by is ok? What do you think would be a good indicator to do a boost leak test? Change in fuel mileage? Not everyone is running a pyrometer.
@3DayWeekend
@3DayWeekend Жыл бұрын
Well, since I've had this tool, I have discovered that if your boost side has been open, you likely have a small boost leak or two. Probably not enough to be noticeable, but they are there. Outside of rising EGT's, fuel economy would be the next go-to. Of course, fuel economy could change from other things too, like different tires, windows up/down, driving style that tank... so it would be hard to judge. This one was just big enough that I noticed a slight lack of power while hauling the 5th wheel up a hill, so that could be a sign as well. For blow by, the standard test on these trucks is to park on level ground, take off your oil cap, turn it upside down, and set it back on the oil fill hole. If it bounces up in the air and flies off, that's excessive blow by. If it moves a little bit but mostly stays in the same spot, you're good. There are more technical tests, but it involves compression/leak down tests and removal of the fuel injectors.

You still have a boost leak. You need to spray soapy water on the intercooler and the charge pipes and where it bolts to the engine. Some air will leak into the crankcase but it shouldn’t be much, and it’s not normal to leak into the crank case very quickly. The front seal on the turbo being worn will allow pressure to leak into the crank case.

Good pointer. I did end up going back through it and spraying down everything and had to tighten up a couple things. Turns out my issue was a bad EGT sensor, but it's good to know that my cold side is sealed up tight!

The front piston ring on the turbo will allow air to leak into the crank case if it is worn. The pressure normally holds longer when there aren’t any leaks. You still likely have leaks. The hardest leak to test is a wastegate diaphragm being bad. I would put soapy water on the intercooler and the charge pipes and test it again.
@3DayWeekend
@3DayWeekend 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, we did spray it down for a re-test when the issue didn't go away and found a couple very small ones. It ended up being a bad EGT probe. Thanks for the suggestion!

Don't know if you are still active, but I got a wastewater engine light code, and I hear a leak on passenger side only when I shut the truck off . Wondering if it's a vacuum leak under the battery . Now maybe it's the wastegate leaking?

Anyways. Was the issue just that one boot? No resolution or follow up videos? My 6.7 is making a high pitch squeal above 25psi boost. I’m thinking one of my intercooler boots is ripped after I recently did some work on my truck. I need a topside creeper so I quit leaning on everything!!
@3DayWeekend
@3DayWeekend 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and subscribing! My only leak was from that one boot. The truck definitely picked up some power while hauling a heavy trailer uphill. The main issue I was chasing (high EGT's) ended up being a faulty ground on the EGT sensor. And yes, a topside creeper is a GAME CHANGER! I park my truck for the winter, but I'm sure it will be in more videos come springtime. Thanks again!

Have 2006 5.9 noticed was taking just slightly longer to start but not much. blew water pump shortly after doubt it’s related. Any way I changed pump and started up had some pinging or similar noise went away after couple min figured was from antifreeze all over everything. Next couple days noticed engine idling higher. Put in gear she’s anxious to go. Had a wine when I first started her in the morning . Seemed to run fine other then fast idle but now having some break ups at higher rpm . I did dump some injected cleaner in with the hot shots edt. In seemed to calm down for one trip but back up fast idle and breaking up intermittently
@3DayWeekend
@3DayWeekend Жыл бұрын
That's not good. Sounds like you may have a sticking injector. I've had to replace the injectors in mine at 100k miles after getting some bad fuel on a trip. Not cheap. Take a look at your exhaust and see if there is some white smoke. Hard to start, pinging noise, high idle, and break up are all symptoms of a failing injector. Could be something else, but that's what I would be most suspicious of.

Was good for a bit now intermittent symptoms . If anybody else reads this 5.9 common rail you have two choices new bosch or BBI. I have a new set of BBI on the way. I got a smoking deal on the delphi so I chanced it and my tail pipe got the white smoking deal ! I wouldn’t put a reman in if I got for free not worth it

Are you saying the high EGTs were due to a bad ground on the EGT probe? Thanks.
@3DayWeekend

Yes sir. In my experience, a bad EGT ground on the probe usually just maxes out the reading. This one seemed like the value was legitimate so it threw me off. Oh well. I was still able to find and fix the boost leak which restored my fuel economy!

What gauges are those and are they hard to install.thanks
@3DayWeekend
@3DayWeekend 2 жыл бұрын
Those gauges are my tuner. It's the Smarty Touch. Plug-and-play install, EXCEPT.... the EGT sensor requires drilling and tapping into your exhaust manifold. It includes the instructions. You'll want a high quality drill bit designed for drilling metal is all. That part is optional. All the other gauges come from the OBD port. Here's their website: www.madselectronics.com/SmartyTouch.html

Why not pull vacuum so you can see smoke being sucked in? It's easier to pinpoint the leak that way
@3DayWeekend
@3DayWeekend Жыл бұрын
Boost leaks can be tricky, and many times they only leak once the pressure is over a certain PSI. I've had a leak where it took about 20PSI before it opened the coupler hose enough to make it leak. Anything under that was perfectly fine. Sometimes it takes a combination of tests to find a leak - vacuum, smoke, high pressure, high pressure with smoke. Whatever needs to be done to find it!
@pigeonsil240sx
@pigeonsil240sx Жыл бұрын
why does it give high egt though? on my car if i have severe boost leak i run pig rich,rich should lower egt not raise it and it makes sense why it would run rich as you suck in metered air that escapes the ecu is adding fuel based on that air volume so you get rich.this is on my maf engine so maybe its different with map?
@3DayWeekend
@3DayWeekend Жыл бұрын
Right. MAF and MAP will run it a little differently, as will gas vs diesel. The diesel is just injecting fuel and assuming everything is fine for air flow based on that pressure gauge. A big enough boost leak means less air, and less air means lower compression, and lower compression on a diesel will result in an incomplete burn, and the incomplete burn (which is still burning) moves out the exhaust valves, through the manifold to the turbo. Now your turbo is getting hotter exhaust so your intake air is warmer, and it just builds and builds temperature the longer you have your foot in it. It sounds backwards, but it needs air to keep the temps down. But... the biggest difference is that this is a diesel tow rig, which regularly operates at 100% load for miles if going up hill. That amplifies the issue and the EGTs just keep climbing and climbing, higher and higher. In a normal daily driver situation under partial load, a small leak would not even be noticeable in the EGT reading. Furthermore, when the computer recognizes low boost, it does pull fuel, and now the engine is down on power, still pulling that trailer up the hill, getting hotter and hotter all the while because it doesn't have the air it needs or the fuel for an efficient burn. Vicious cycle! Excellent question! Thanks for watching!

A major one perhaps (a blatant hole in a tube, etc), but you really need that pressure to expand everything. Mine didn't leak until I there was enough pressure to push the hose/clamp up.
