Hey there Big Strappers. Hope to hear YOUR experiences with Cummins engines. Was it good or was it the engine from hell? State the engine model and what went right. Or wrong. 😉

That I-phone thing is scary, no more big bro, thank you!! The emissions are basically screwing up all the engines. The N14's were a great motor, and the company tried Cat, they were mostly good but some issues. Since then we've been using Cummins, first the ISX, which we did have some issues with, mostly cams and emissions. When we went to the X15's fingers crossed, no issues. I run an X15 Performance Series 605/2050 with an 18 speed in a T880, it's had some tuning done and it's been a monster with no issues to this point, my mileage is about .4 better than a comparable Western Star with the DD16 600/2050, 18 speed and same gearing, stock vs stock the Cummins pulled better and got slightly better mileage, and the Detroit has also been issue free, so time will tell. Not a huge fan of either the Paccar or Volvo engines, but I tried a new Mack Anthem with the MP8 505/1850 and 18 speed, liked it but they need to do some bigger HP for our use, nice truck though. Problem is, all the manufacturers are REALLY pushing Automatics now, maybe I'm too old school but I really prefer to do my own shifting, and I have yet to try an automatic that works as well with a Jake as I'd like it to.

Funny story, Detroit dd15 can do internet connections. I was cruising at 70 one minute and without warning it wouldn't go over 65, so I pressed the peddle was topping out at 62. That night I sent it to the shop... They said it was ok, for the next 2 weeks I kept sending it into the shop as often as I could until finally the dealer said your company dialed your truck down.

I only run 12.7 Detroit’s pre EGR and have done for the last 5 years, they are the most reliable and durable engines ever made. Cost effective for owner operators and fleet owners also. Emissions equipment failing can take down an owner operator. No one has 10/15k just sitting around for repairs.

I have a red top n14 in my pete and It will remain the finest engine ever built in my opinion. Great fuel economy, plenty of power and great sound witb dual 7 inch straight pipes. These new engines are a waste of money. They may be nice when new but when the things need mataince it'd probably be cheaper to just light your wallet on fire.

My brother always bought trucks with Cummins motors and was happy with the older ones. . I mainly drive Internationals and I just drove one with the X15 motor. The dealer said that was the replacement for the awful Maxforce motors. Really like it cruising at 75 and still maintaining close to 9 mpg. Hopefully, it is reliable since I see a lot of newer trucks needing major service before 500k now.

In 2018 my boss decided to reward me for my service with a new K-Whopper. We picked out a 2018 W900L Xtra cab. The choice of power plants was either the Pacar or the Cummins. I had heard horror stories about both and ultimately went with the a 2017 ISX-15 paired with an 18 speed. At this time, with 2 1/2 years of service and 200,000 miles, I’ve had 0 issues aside from a fuel/water problem due to where I was getting my fuel. I’ve had two other KW’s with the ISX, and although sometimes underpowered, I’m very happy with my current ride. Besides, it is my profile pic

2015 up ISXs & X's hardly have major issues that wasn't maintenance based and these new darn extended service intervals won't work for everyone as most would believe. But the EPA 07 & 10 engines in all makes had the lowest relibility when you really start digging for information.

What i believe now is the engine manufacturers realize that the majority of the market considers new trucks " disposable " which makes sense. There is zero sense in trying to stuff a new engine in a new truck after a few years. They just dispose of them.

Just got my new 389 that I ordered back in June and I decided to put a x15 production series 500 horse in it. My first new truck in 22 years of trucking and I was very skeptical of buying anything with def. My 2002 379 with a 6nz cat I had it for 15 years and she was an awesome truck. I think comparing the new motors to the old stuff is like apples and oranges I can tell you one thing this new truck is getting 7.2 miles per gallon us so far which is about 1.7 mi per gallon better than my old Pete running tanker and that's at 93% loaded miles the truck is only has 23,000 miles on it so hopefully she's a good one. And the reason I went with Cummins is all the service managers I talked to in Ontario at Peterbilt London Windsor and Kitchener told me that the x15 is way more reliable of a motor especially on the electronic side compared to the PACCAR, and the dealerships also said you're at the mercy of Paccar dealers if you need it fixed somewhere at least with the Cummins you can go in anywhere.

The first tractor I ever bought has a Cummins M11 Celect Plus. I still own that tractor. My "daily driver" has an ISX 15. It was overhauled at about 990k miles even though it still ran strong. It has over 400k on the overhaul with no issues. I'm glad to hear that the X 15 is even better than the ISX since I bought 2 brand new tractors with the X engine this year and plan on buying 2 more next year. You'd take a DD15 over a Cummins? Seriously? You might as well trade in your Pete for a new Valvo lol! When I bought a new tractor and put a driver in my old one in 2001, I bought the same truck (Freightliner FLD12064) but instead of a Cummins, I spec'd it with a 14L Detroit. The Detroit was rated at 500hp while the M11 made 370hp. The trans and rears, along with EVERYTHING else was the same between the two tractors. While the Detroit would run great on flat ground, that little Cummins would pull the Detroit on any hill.

Have an 15L isx in my T680 698,000 miles,,work for a private fleet so money really isn’t an issue, they take good care of the trucks. Engine wise feels like a brand new truck, emissions is the issue we’ve had a scr issue twice, dealer did force regen and was okay. Something else with the nozzle angle for spraying def,the trucks frame in the rear is constantly white not sure why, can’t seem to figure that one out but run normal at the moment. All of our fleets trucks have had the issues we’ve had between 500,000-600,000. My truck seems to be the fleet lemon, but even then with the scr code white smoke, ect it’s never let us sit and has always ran as if nothing was wrong. I personally wouldn’t own one.I won’t pay that bill lol It costs the frame in white minimally currently but they use to fix it and later that week it’s be really coated and drinking def. we run our trucks between 1.2-1.5 million before rebuilds.typically put 2-3 million on a truck. Now they stated this year no more rebuilds, not sure why we have our own shops master techs and equipment to do so. This year with the slow down, and really not working much compared to previous years we will still have put 300,000 on it. Cummins issue IMO is emissions, know a few people that have moved over to x15 and say they are better

I am most definitely in agreement that the ISX15 engines have had way too many problems. Dropped liners Chewed up cam shafts and rockers Front and rear structure oil leaks. Oil consumption due to polished cylinder liners. And the total engine killing high pressure fuel pumps. They do say the X15 engines are supposed to be better. Time will tell.

I've heard the same. My mechanic I use said the guys that follow the extended intervals in the manual seem to be having the most engine problems and fuel system failures. I change my oil at 20,000 km with fuel filters. Book says 48000 km for both if under 6 mpg pulling heavy. No thanks. Oil appears to be same as the old engines when I look at the colour change and it drops on the dipstick right around 18000 km. Just like the old motors I ran did. At $60,000 just for a drop in motor now a days why would anyone neglect cheap oil and filters.

Waiting to see how the new x15 is with time. Won't buy a Detroit cause of their plastic oil pick up tubes. Know of too many rebuilt for low oil pressure due to o rings or cracked plastic. Paccar has been great but this year Paccar starting locking out my ecm even though my shop has the davie software. Only way to get it unlocked is to go to the dealer and allow them to do a software update. Next truck might have a Cummins due to the more friendly software for diagnosing and a warranty that gets stood behind at the shop I know. I've had enough with a dealer locking out my ecm on a truck I own.

I suspect many who have issues with the ISX are lugging the engines way too much. I pull heavy haul. The 475 I had never had any issues the 6 months I had it. The 550 I have right now has given me no issues. I rarely sit below 1500rpm except when cruising at below 80 km/h. Lugging makes a glorious deep sound but it's also a good way to fuck the engine.

Diesel mechanic here. Cummins are still pretty good. The problem with cams is all about the long oil change intervals, use cheap conventional oil and change it more often. All the trucks that I do cams on are those guys who says "I saved thousands by changing oil every 600 hours", right before they get a 6k bill. Best engine is a series 60. Reliable, cheap to fix and own, sip diesel. They just lack power.

As I said in this live chat, I love my Cummins ISX. I had a 530 hp, wore that out, and then replaced it with a 565, which I still have now. It has 1.4 million miles on it and still going strong. Replaced the head last summer but the block and cylinders are still in great shape. Cross hatching still quite visible. 👍 Replaced the fuel injector cam but the valve cam was fine so it’s still going strong. Just put in a fresh batch of AMSOIL yesterday. Good for another 50k miles! I’ll buy a 3rd Cummins when the time comes.

@@SmartTrucking wow! Yes there is a Cummins dealership about 15 miles from where I live but I get most of my work done at a small family owned shop here in town. Cummins did my engine replacement but the shop I use is a Cummins shop and they handle all of the maintenance on it as well as on my whole truck. The guy who owns it is a reserve sheriff’s deputy so I’ve always trusted him implicitly. He also has a degree in mechanical engineering and knows Cummins engines inside and out. Interestingly enough, he’s not a big fan of the new Cummins X-15. He prefers my ISX over the X-15 hands down. Says it’s a way better engine and is much more reliable.

Paccar does the whole gps thing on the model I got.... =_= a pain in the butt to pass someone and getting to the uphill just to be locked back from 68 to 65 now doing the same speed as the guy I am trying to pass, even if I am pressing gas to floor, at least on the cruise control so far, which I need on for the 68 limiter, 65 on pedal..... Detroit was a lot better on my previous truck as pedal would override the whole throttle cut back.

If it was only that simple. All manufacturers have problems and I don’t Think one is better than the other. The real problem is it takes a few years to know if a engine is good or not once you find a good one that series of engine or CPL is no longer made. Your local dealer may be far more important to you than you think. So there no one answer that’s fits all. Rempet it is not how many mills the trucks has on it how much work it has dun so fuel burnt. Just bought 5 X 15 Efficiency series at 500 HP and we are very happy with them phenomenal fuel mileage at 110,00 lb way better Then the Detroit or the Paccar.

My early years of driving was all logging trucks in the steep country of North Idaho. The 855 was king in those days, but the detroit 8v71 wasn't far behind. The 1693 wasn't popular because of weight and cost. They also lacked compression braking. Hydraulic braking over heated quickly. Mack's 300 six was somewhat reliable, but too underpowered and the v-8 Maxidyne was a total pile of junk. From the cost of operation perspective, Detroit won the battle. Although they had to be rebuilt more frequently and tended to have higher fuel consumption, especially the 12v71, the cost of rebuilding was much cheaper than Cummins. Cat has always been very proud of their parts. The detroit 92 silver series made a splash, but didn't dethrone the 855 cummins. It was the last cummins engine that was reliable. L series wasn't bad, but way underpowered for logging applications. K series was a nightmare, although, due to it's large displacement , had a phenomenon engine brake. A big plus in a logging truck. The 60 series detroit became somewhat popular for a short time , but after the E model cat(almost a 60 series clone)came out, and the later C models, there was nothing that could compete. The ISX was a total disaster. I worked for a large trucking company in Fairbanks Alaska, who ran the haul road to Prudhoe Bay, that bought a few for a trial. They were so bad, after the first year we took E model cats out of wrecked rigs and replaced the cummins so we could run out the trucks. Trucks with a ISX had very little trade in value. Cat wisely got out of the automotive side of things, leaving detroit the go to engine on the haul road these days by default. This DEF crap is a nightmare in cold country. Biden and the "Green New Deal" bullshit will destroy what's left of trucking.

Change the sensors out related to your EGR system. I believe you can remove the EGR valve and clean it like you can on the ISX, I would do that, get as much soot out of the motor, mainly the intake side. And the cans, they need to be removed and cleaned properly, or replaced if face plugged. you will need to drop them to inspect. Also, the fuel doser and SCR dosers need to be replaced periodically, if you are up there at around say 500,000 miles, it is a good thing to do. Also, the NOX sensors on the cans, they only last so long too.

You know I had a Cummings in my 99 Dodge 1 ton, never had any issues out of it that was not caused by me or a screw ball mechanic that did not do something right. And it had been an old fleet truck before I got it, and I used it for hot shot work. But I seen a lot of them with blown head gaskets or cracked heads, from people souping them up so they could roll coal and do burn outs with them. But given a choice I would take an old Caterpillar diesel any day over a Cummings. And I do not hate Cummings, I just like Caterpillar better.

I currently drive a 2020 X15 500hp/1850lbft, its a dog even bobtailing. 18 spd RTLO-20918B w/3.91s. My 500hp/1550-1750lbft ishift w/3.25s walked this this truck everywhere I go. I'm pulling a tri-axle live bottom at 120k(53,272kg) vs my 140k(63,500kg) B-trains. One thing I absolutely HATE about this X15 is, when your engine speed is at 1450rpm or more. It sounds like the motor is throwing a rod almost. Or like the old EMD 2-Stroke trains(731v16s). Of course the 3.91s vs the 0.73 OD means 1600rpm for 105km/h. I had driven a 2013 ISX 15 500hp/1850lbft in a Pete and it was worn out at 808km. There wasn't anything special about that truck either(RTLO-20918B w/3.55s) it got a new turbo at 744k and she quit near 50 rd on the QEW almost 3 weeks after the turbo r&r. 3 liners were toast in 2017. Company replaced all the trucks with the Mack MP8 505C (505hp/1860lbft) w/mDrive and 3.58s. I think my Volvo with 3.25s was better(faster and better mileage). I pulled the exact same trailers(Westcan 11310+B) with all three trucks and I prefer hands down my Volvo even though its the same engine-trans in the mack the programming is different. That Volvo d13 had its first issue at 680k(stuck egr valve) warranty covered it no issue. It soot loaded the motor, killed the turbo, plugged the EGR cooler(cleaned) and screwed the DPF. All in a $26,200 repair. Warranty covered all of it. I did change the transmission because I forgot to change the coalace filter in the air dryer and filled the control actuators with oil, there was typical wear for 850km(350k of it at 140k) so I opted to change the whole trans(2 year warranty) at $22k. She is still working well for the guy that bought it. He did a set of injectors as a precaution a few months ago as one was reading low. Even pulling g 140k I was getting 2.2- 2.6km/L(6.27mpg winter, 7.33mpg summer canadian gal)

@@SmartTrucking at first suspected the Cummins Nanny VAM(vehicle acceleration management), as most economy series engines come with the whole list enabled. For "protection" of the driveline with new drivers lol. I had the company remove the nannies at the dealership and it was slightly better, but no where near how a 500hp should run at 19050kg tare(9150kg tractor). I drove a 410hp 12.7L S60 w/15spd, running 63500 up clappison corners(hwy 6 north from 403) that would out run this new 500hp slug. Once the old 1998 square hood star got up to speed she was happy. Thinking about it even the 2009 450hp(435hp is more like it) Benz I used for truck and pup at 59000kg gross was better(RTLO18918B w/4.10) The company have other 500/1850 X15s that move better but still not up to my expectations for a 500hp motor. When I worked for Westcan there was another driver that said the same thing about the 505c MP8 vs D13 500hp/1850lbft, he had 3.58 in his trucks. He owned 3 trucks and was a company driver for Westcan. He still drives for them, but sold his iron and getting ready to retire. I have never been a fan of Cummins and everything I touch confirms my dislike for them. With the few exceptions of a 1994 280hp L10, and the only choice in transit buses, the 8.9L ISL9 275hp/1150lbft.
