THIS IS A TRUCK I BOUGHT AWHILE AGO....I WAS TOLD THAT THE TURBO WENT BACK. THE DEALER REPLACED IT AND THEN TOLD THE OWNER THE ENGINE WAS BAD......WE REMOVED THE WATER TANK, PTO, PUMP, SPRAYERS, VALVES AND CONTROLS. THEY WERE SOLD OF TO RECOUP SOME OF MY INVESTMENT IN THIS TRUCK. WE ARE GOING TO START AT BEGINNING WITH THE BASICS AND FUMBLE OUR WAY THROUGH THIS TO FIND OUT IF IT IS WORTH FIXING OR PARTING.

If you're still looking for a oil drain caddy thats air evacuated..emerson oil drain caddy is a great one..tho pricey . I went with a 12 volt drain caddy from northern tool ..was about 250..i do services at customer locations at times ..usually outsids and i use a battery for emptying it rather than start my compressor . As far you wanting a drain funnel..i cut the top off a plastic 55 gallon barrel..about 10 inches high..i put a nipple in the large bung hole so it sits in the barrel it drains into..i added expanded metal inside the diameter of it..and bent the edges so it was raised up off the bottom. I also used 4 self tapping screws underneath it like legs on the the lip..they fit just inside the lip of the metal 55 gallon drum in sits on..so it cant move around or fall off..it works great and holds a lot of filters for draining

it definitely had a bad day. i imagine it came to an abrupt halt. the problem with todays engine is when you have a small failure.....it does so much destruction.....it is hard to repair something like this over replacing. the cost is stacked higher to repair. however, the truck is more attractive to sell with a successful in frame with paperwork.

I'm gonna guess the turbo went out and got oil in the intercooler, the turbo was replaced and the truck was driven after the new turbo was installed which caused the engine to runaway from the oil that had accumulated in the intercoooler and dropped a valve in the process. Idk just a guess but it looks time consuming and expensive whatever the case lol
@j.c.smithprojects
@j.c.smithprojects 4 жыл бұрын
expensive is right. i bought this truck with the worst case scenario in mind....replace the engine with a used one. in my area, this truck is very attractive. they make great dump trucks for pulling an excavator. mid range power and a 10 speed make it ideal for a local excavation company. it was a single axle road tractor originally......no real money selling it like that. i have my theory on what happened. i go over it in the next video.

Drain pans for the top of the container lisle 17902 is 24"x36". Or lisle 17892 at 24x24 square. Both will need a quick 2x4 frame to hold them up on the top of your container without tipping. Hmm, that would have made some interesting noises going down the road. Judging by the lack of oil staining in the bottom end that looks like a pretty fresh engine, after 300,000-odd miles it would normally be a lot darker, so I'm wondering if someone forgot to set the valve clearances when the new lump went in, or maybe a short block...

I think they replaced just the turbo and didn't pull and clean the air to air cooler and it runaway. Or what you said they hooked the coolant line up wrong. Or the egr cooler is leaking coolant in the oil and hydro locked it. Also inspect the injector cups they can crack and put coolant in the cylinders usually its cylinder 6 and 5 for some reason. And before you get it running pull the air to air cooler and clean it I be willing to bet they never did

Hopefully when you get the head off you will have a better idea of salvageable or not, right now I am thinking salvageable, are there issues, yes, can they be overcome yes if things dont look too shabby under the head. What is nice is depending on the mileage, you either have a truck that works you could sell, or an engine to use or sell and a truck still for parts if you wanted. So I could see you coimg ahead on this with a tidy little profit too boot and I think you r suspicion about the coolant hydro locking engine isnt that far off... because there are a lot of sign that sure make it look like it could be the cause
@j.c.smithprojects
@j.c.smithprojects 4 жыл бұрын
when i looked at this truck, i bought it based on my opinion of the worst case scenario. that was "the motor is junk and i will have to replace it with a used one". i figured that cost of a used engine with comparable or less miles, fluids, filters, miscellaneous parts, my time to do the work and how much i need to make on this investment of time and money. it is less expensive to replace the engine than to repair. if i repair it with a successful full in-frame rebuild, the value of the truck increases. it doesnt increase enough to cover the cost of all the parts but it makes the truck more desirable and easier to sell. it has a shopping list of incidental parts that need replaced due to age and rust. it adds up fast. in the next video, i go over what i think happened, my options and what what i think is the best plan.

I watched this video to see you tear into a M11, I might get one soon. I bet, when the turbo went the engine overran until the valvetrain let go, I base this off the junk on your finger from the exhaust and the condition of the keepers. Was the Cummins dealer at fault? On one hand they aren't mind readers but a competent tech would have seen the signs once they removed the turbo and also saw the engine was extremely low on oil.

What is the determining factors that will let you go this far on an engine?
@j.c.smithprojects
@j.c.smithprojects 4 жыл бұрын
many factors come into play to make this decision. first. i have to be in the truck "right". i was told this truck needed engine repair. when looking at the value of this truck before buying, i figure what it is worth running and driving like it should. work the numbers backwards from there. deduct the cost for worst case scenario....... a used replacement engine including fluids and my labor time to diagnose, tear down and repair or replace the engine. subtract the amount i would need to profit on this investment of time and money. the ending number tells me what i can pay for the truck. second, after i figure out what the engine needs, i look at all the other repairs the truck will need to achieve the caliber of truck i want to sell. if the numbers dont work as a repair....i analyze it as used parts for others trucks.....if it dont make dollars, it dont make sense!

Are you going to buy a parts truck off copart with engine and tandem axles or just buy the used engine?

JD did you drain the oil out first to look for metal in the oil?
@j.c.smithprojects

i looked at the oil before i bought it. once i found that it would not turn over 360*......it didnt matter. it had to come apart.
@BobPegram

Commented too soon! However, I am learning. I still think I'd drain the oil first and if it were ok, I'd go on to clean the battery connections.
@j.c.smithprojects
@j.c.smithprojects 4 жыл бұрын
so....you would drain the oil and then try to crank it over? not going to work real well......if you are saying you would put new oil in it....realize this....oil is $13.50 a gallon times almost 11 gallons......then if the engine needs to come apart....that is $150. wasted.

@@j.c.smithprojects Not gonna do anything if the oil is bad. If it were good, I'd pour it back in.
@j.c.smithprojects
@j.c.smithprojects 4 жыл бұрын
before i would tear it down, i would still want to crank it over. there are far too many other things that need to be checked before the tear down. the more you can find out before it is apart, the less likley you will miss something.

Hey JC you have had a lot of trucks shipped to you from out west is there some one better than the other I really dont want to post on uship because you dont know what you getting. I understand if you prefer to not answer but Thanks anyhow
@j.c.smithprojects
@j.c.smithprojects 4 жыл бұрын
i would never use uship. the last i knew, they did not verify motor carrier status or proper insurance.....which means anyone can list themselves as a carrier even if they do not have everything that is required by law to do so. so you could be handing your keys to a stranger who may or may not deliver your car and you would be lucky to recover one cent. find a local shipper in the area or in your area. i have access to websites that list cars and trucks to transport only. you could try "auto transport intel" on youtube. his name is jay. i met him at the mid american trucking show last spring. he works in the car shipping business, im sure he can help.

VERY unsafe working under that truck with blocks under the wheels and jack stands. You should open both cab windows, put chain through cab and attach to the rafters !!! LOL.

Now I appreciate any fellow mechanic However I found this video hard to watch. If you suspect a bad engine why not try to spin it 1st And if she spends but locks up at any point through rotation then drain the oil and see what you're working With. But then again everybody's a critic until they get their hands dirty.

Probably did not clean the cac and it ran away check the abuse history. The locks are most likely under the cam it’s almost like a tube with raised drains under the camshaft you can’t see it from the bottom. Also before you take that stiffener plate off if you haven’t already heat the Tory bolts with a torch Cummins uses a nasty yellow loctite I have seen many a man take the skin of the top of there hand on the block trying to break them free. Built a c13 that did the same thing owner lost a low pressure turbo and had a hack mechanic change it. Left all the oil in the cac it was fine at idle but I bet his ole butt hole was puckered when he flipped the cruise to high idle and it ran away 🤦🏻‍♂️

like using a torx head bolt isnt bad enough.....add thread locker. it doesnt take long for panic to set in when one starts to run away.

My guess is that they saw a problem and misjudged it as a cause rather than an effect of another problem. Just a guess. But that is the foundation of the throw-parts-at-it school of diagnostics.
