This result shows that it was the best decision. (altho regrettable for Usman) The state of play and winning will ALWAYS be more important than any one player's milestone. Its why I Healy was dropped before his 100th test and Warney was dropped after Lara slaughtered him in the '99 WI series..

I think that's it, the "team comes first" part. I agree he put the team in that position, but nobody knew beforehand that the whole of day 3 was gonna be washed out. Based on how RSA have played this series so far, I think Pat made the right call, as far as winning the match is concerned. We also don't know behind the scenes, but I'm pretty sure Pat must have asked Usman about it before making the decision. The selfless dude that he is, I'm fairly certain Khawaja must have agreed on that declaration. Tbh, I remember something similar happening before, when Dravid had declared while Sachin was still on 194. Sure, the conditions are different, but the reasons for the declaration are possibly similar. And, looking at the RSA scorecard at the end of the day, you can't really fault Pat for it. We don't know how much difference that 1 extra over in the Aus 1st innings could have been to the eventual RSA scorecard.
