@masonaut02 жыл бұрын
It seems pretty clear to me that the DLC was designed to take place whenever you beat it. You beat the devil and then played the DLC? Congrats, Chalice’s adventure takes place after the main game. You beat one mausoleum and then went on an adventure to save Chalice’s soul and then beat the devil? Congrats, that’s the order it takes place. If the newspaperboy and the story’s disconnectedness is anything to go by, the developers clearly wanted to make the DLC’s placement in the timeline work wherever it laid out for YOU while playing it. This is exactly why a lot of old Cuphead players (who are beating the DLC long after the main game) feel like it’s a sequel, and why many of the new players feel that it a sidequest: it’s literally DESIGNED to slide in wherever you play it, and that means the devs did a good job at making the new content flexible.

I would give some attention towards the ending of the base game, as one clue towards the D.L.C being a sequel that you missed in the video. The final slide has the text "As an all-day celebration began, the brothers promised to never wander into trouble again. And they didn't - until the next time, of course! But that is another story..." Now that may either hint at a sequel, or to the D.L.C, as that is certainly the brothers(and Chalice) wandering into trouble again, and we're certainly being told another story in the D.L.C. I'd say that makes it very obvious where it is supposed to be canonically.

There's honestly plenty of material to explore if they ever did make Cuphead 2. Judging from the statues of cups, plates, and dinnerware in Rugged Ridge, and the shield with the term Calix Animi, which means Soul Cup, Rugged Ridge was once some sort of Cup themed kingdom that was brought to ruin somehow, and Cuphead and Mugman seem to be the reincarnations of its guardians. Chalice appears to be some sort of goddess by her statue's appearance. There's a LOT of hidden lore they stuck in here. Why is any of this here? What happened to this kingdom? There's a massive amount of questions that could make for a great sequel.

I for sure think it’s a sequel. One of my (less logical) reasons is because of the song mentioned in the video *Now the debts are paid, the pastries are baked* This might sound stupid but I originally thought of the bolded line as “they already paid their debts to the devil, now they’re collecting ingredients for a pastry”. (But it does make sense if it’s referring to saltbaker) Plus like he said canonically Cuphead and Mugman had till midnight to collect all of the soul contracts or else they’d like…die. So I feel like they wouldn’t stop to bake along the way. Also cuphead and mugman sort of acted like legendary chalice was their friend, which would make more sense at the end of the game cause they ran into her way more times. (Plus if it was a prequel, why wasn’t she like…trapped in another mausoleum?) One more thing to consider is the end credits of the main game where the voice goes "That's all there is...There isn't any more...Or is there?". Which I think is hinting to a sequel, the dlc.

On the topic of a "Cuphead 2", as much as I want that to happen, I don't think we'll be getting one (at least not for a long time). Studio MDHR has been vague on what's next from them, responding to interviews with something along the lines of "we having nothing to announce at this time, but we will continue to use hand-drawn animation." I think they might try some new ideas separate from Cuphead, perhaps in different animations styles (could be interesting to see something in an later 40s style or an UPA style), but I think the D.L.C. is the last we'll be seeing of Cuphead outside of the Netflix show and merchandise for awhile.

Something else to note is that chalice appears in the bad ending of the base game if you give up your soul at the end I think there just isn’t a set timeline for what happens and it depends on how you play the game but the fact that it shows 1934 in the end credits of the dlc does make this a bit confusing and inconsistent if that’s the case
@Jaytion17172 жыл бұрын
I think that the dlc has no cannon timeline. It takes place whenever you go there during the game. Like how how paperboy says different things depending on where you are in the game. Also somewhat unrelated but I also think the Cuphead show is still in the cannon timeline and it takes place before the game so that's why ms chalice knows you
@452pokemaster2 жыл бұрын
I like to think that there is no “one time” that the DLC takes place. It just takes place whenever the player encounters it. The main reason is because the newspaper boy’s dialogue changes depending on how far you are in the main game. You can’t really make a timeline for an open ended game like Cuphead. It’s like trying to figure out the “canonical” order in which Cuphead and Mugman fought the game’s bosses. Ooh, did the cups fight the Root Pack or Goopy le Grande first? There is no answer, because the player can fight them in whatever order they want! Just like how they can access the DLC whenever they want.
@jplol2902 жыл бұрын
I believe that the DLC takes place when you played it. If you went through the DLC before defeating the devil, then it takes place there. If you went through it after defeating the devil, then the same is true. It's like how you can choose some bosses to do before others and vice versa.
@pizzer96442 жыл бұрын
I would say my reasoning for having the dlc coming after would be that If I remember correctly, The Devil said something about them having one day to get all the souls to him, and I don't think if they were on a time limit like that they would just hop over to a new isle that has no souls for them to get

it's very clear to me that studio mdhr just isn't focused on in depth lore with cuphead. they have a basic backbone of a story so that nothing feels out of place and everything has some sort of cohesion, but they are more focused on just making a fun gameplay experience. plus, not having a timeline with set continuity might just be one of the many nods to old age cartoons, which were usually just one offs and not part of a greater story.
@caelum39262 жыл бұрын
The dlc’s timeline placement depends on if you play it before beating the devil or after, as the news boy’s dialogue depends on your game state. So because of this it depends on when the player chooses to play the dlc to put it on the timeline

The question is more if the dlc takes place before or after deafening the devil, seeing as you have to beat one mausoleum to play it, but honestly I think the timeline for it is fluid and the dlc is intended to take place anytime during the first game seeing as the boatman is on all the isles and because the cat has dialogue for different situations, depending if you’ve beating certain bosses or not
@ezrato2 жыл бұрын
I think it just takes place whenever you as the player play it. It would be weird if you completed a bunch of bosses from the base game, got on the boat to Inkwell Isle 4 and then it's like "oh yeah, this took place before everything you just did", even though you got on the boat after all that. Here's one more thing that confounds the year issue; if you look at the small plaque on Chef Saltbaker's table in the first phase of "A Dish to Die For", it reads as follows: SALTBAKER GENT Canada, '38 I'm guessing that the DLC folder stating a date of departure for 1932 is a reference to the fact that this DLC was supposed to come out 2 years after the original game did (which ended up not happening for various reasons). The question's sort of a wash anyway, since Studio MDHR's stance on it since promoting the game in the month leading up to it's release is that it's both a quest that can take place simultaneously or after the base game, and numerous interviews state that the DLC is more of a 'final farewell' and a 'cool sendoff' to the game of Cuphead (until a sequel happens in like...the 2040s or something).
@notbatman90852 жыл бұрын
I personally believe that the DLC not only takes place after the events of the base game but is also the grand finale to Cuphead. I base this belief off of the book titled "The Art of Cuphead," released on March 17, 2020. In that book, there is a section at the end that gave a sneak peek of "The Delicious Last Course." On page 257, it describes how they came up with the idea for the DLC. It says that they came up with so many new ideas after they finished the base game that they "approached the team and proposed the idea of taking another trip together to the Inkwell Isles for one more grand adventure." This seems to imply that the DLC is the grand finale to Cuphead and there will therefore be no sequel. The book then goes on to say on the same page, "With their quest to defeat The Devil and save their souls already complete, we knew the prospect of going on another journey together was the perfect opportunity to introduce a third playable character." This seems to prove that the DLC does indeed take place after the events of the base game. That being said, this book was published while the DLC was still being worked on, so their plans to make it take place after the events of the base game and have it be the grand finale to Cuphead could have changed since then. However, there has been nothing officially said by them that would lead me to believe that anything has changed, which is why I believe what I do.

I don’t really think the timeline matters much lore-wise, but I think the Devil being the final boss canonically is more…grand, I guess? As far as we know, Chef Saltbaker is kinda just a normal guy who can bake magical pastries, while the Devil is, well, the Devil. Just feels like a step down in terms of stakes Also the nightmare of the Devil makes more sense to happen while he’s still an active threat, but it’s also kinda weird that the boys would decide to just…sleep? Like they have a day to get dozens of contracts before they die, and they decided to not only go on a whole separate adventure, but also take a nap? Seems kinda odd

I think it's obvious that it's the sequel . You mentioned how the newspaper boy gives the coins whether or whether not you beat the game. However in the end he still mentions how we beat the devil like a week ago. (I think it was a week I don't remember exactly) Technically this is one of the biggest pieces of evidence. Think of it like a book. Let's say you've read the first book out of a series and when the second one was released you read it too. You have a friend who hasn't read any of the books. Even though they haven't read the first book, you give them the second book to read. The second book is going to continue the story from the first book. Whether you read the first book or not the story still continues after the ending in the first the book. And it may even have reference towards the first book. To sum it up, the story is going to continue whether you're caught up or not. And considering the references to the original game, it's easy to tell that it's a sequel

Soooooo i Know that people don't really talk about the cuphead show when it comes to the games, but I do feel like it should be mention that in the show Cuphead ACTUALLY HAS A NIGHTMARE ABOUT THE DEVIL. Idk just thought it was kinda neat. Kinda like how the show had chalice show up in a very Cookie-centric episode, then the dlc had the cookie be her charm.

I think the timeline depends on when you go to isle 4 for example you could go at the start and then it could take place when ever you go there

No its a sequel. I dont own the dlc so when i click on 'DLC' it shows the greeting card screen thing but with a tag saying "June 30th 1932." I can upload evidence if you want.

Unfortunately, Mdhr did state that the DLC is the last of Cuphead and Mugman's adventures. They said that they were going to do other projects with the same Rubberhose animation or something different? I'm not sure myself but I believe that is a sequel to the cuphead series.

There is gonna be a Cuphead spin off called "mugman" I'm calling it.

when you fight the secret boss in the astral plane you said that this fight might symbolize a nightmare that cuphead or mugman are having, But here the thing If the Delicious Last Course was a prequel how would they know who the devil and if this was the case they wouldn't have nightmare yet of the devil. Whatever it a prequel or sequel the game is awesome

The DLC isn't a sequel. But it does take place after the main game, my reasoning for this despite your disputes for it is that players are supposed to HAVE played and hopefully finished the base game first then go to the DLC, that's how it works. That's why it's referenced by the paper boy. The fact that there is another option for those who don't finish the base game is just because they couldn't mention you finishing it without finishing it. It's a little nitpicky story hole point that really doesn't mean anything because the new players who haven't finished the base game are playing it wrong. That's why it seems out of place when you can go ahead and meet Chalice off the islands when you should be meeting her first in her little cremation jar. People also seem to forget what DLC is for, extra content. It's not meant to be an ending it's meant to be extra story or events that weren't in the original story (though lets be honest most companies are now just adding late actual content as DLC but I don't consider this the case with CupHead considering the production) Delicious last course isn't anything more than an after story telling a small side story, it's not a sequel (come on an actual sequel would have much more and a bigger story to it) or some in between because we don't get soul contracts making it separate from the base game all together, you have to remember in the main game the boys are on a time limit they wouldn't of had time to go off to some random island and fight this town of extra people, it's just fun extra after content expanding the universe MDHR created.

I still don’t see why people use the secret fight as evidence for it being a sequel. I do think it’s a sequel but the game shows it’s entirely a dream. You go to sleep to fight, the achievement refers to it as a nightmare, and the song is called One Hell of a Dream (or one hell of a bad dream, can’t remember exacts lol)

it's a sequel Because m's chalice is alive in the end and in the super art place you see her as a ghost

I still say it takes place after the main game, and you better agree or ELSE I'm bringing The Devil's Pitchfork as I make my way to your home. Also, I think Cuphead 2 is passible but it won't be a 2D hand-drawn game, it will most likely be something like a 2.5D game with 3D models

Maybe the Cuphead universe has a fluid timeline, like you're supposed to put the pieces together with more content. An example of vague storytelling is thatgamecompany's games Journey and Sky. They do most of the storytelling via environment and not through characters and narration.

In my personal opinion, there is no cuphead timeline, it’s based on old cartoons which rarely had any cannon besides what the characters names are, the characters usually ran around, got hit a bunch, adventure over, done and done, it didn’t matter what took place before or after, it’s just another wacky adventure of one or two lovable characters

theory. there is no concrete timeline and it depends on when YOU go to the DLC island.
