Picture quality is horrible... wish some editing had placed better images Disappointing

It seems that poor picture quality is the hallmark of serious art history. When I was studying it at university the vast majority of academic writing on works of art had no accompanying images whatsoever of the works being discussed. You were lucky if you could find a couple of crummy black and white photos at the very back of the book. I'm sure they did this to save printing costs, but it always amazed me nevertheless. But now I understand that for an art historian the most important thing is the writing, less so the artwork itself.

Just look the way the man is leading the woman. The picture was painted shortly after the woman had passed. So my interpretation is that the man is death, having no empathy in his face which expresses determination, the determination to the end of her life and her hidden consent, pregnant or not.
