I'm from Boston and a Red Sox fan. What Buckner had to endure after making that error was down right a shameful reflection on our society and yes Red Sox fans. Without him the Sox never would have made the World Series and Sox fans should have felt proud that he was part of the organization. He was a great player who deserved a better fate. His daughter actually appeared in an episode of Curb as an airplane stewardess. I give David credit for writing this piece r making Billy Buck a hero

Being a cubs fan I liked Bill Buckner but as many know Steve Bartman was the cubs version of Bill in 86 and I don’t blame either for what happened to them and it’s an equal disgrace over here in Chicago as over there in Boston for what those two had to go through, and both games are similar, both teams fucked up it wasn’t only 1 person, and somebody had to be a scape goat

It was not all that soft of a hit and down the line. Had he not been playing so deep he would have had to dive and get up in time to throw out Mookie Wilson, one of the fastest men in major league baseball in his prime.

You can always tell a guy that knows zilch about baseball when he only knows Billy Buck for the error in 86. The guy was a scrappy, gutsy and all out player. You couldn't strike him out and couldn't walk him. Probably my all time favorite Cubby and we missed him when he left Chicago.

Considering how deep he was playing if he fields that ground ball Mookie beats him to first. Fat fuck Stanley was nowhere near the bag. Three straight singles. Passed ball. Top if off second baseman was not backing up first and allowed Knight to score. Buckner won in the end. Beautiful loving wife. Great family. Pimp house. Put his kids through college by signing autographs. Boston didn't deserve him.

34 year old met fan here to whom the 1986 World Series was the greatest moment in my life as a sports fan. It brings a tear to my eye to watch Bill Buckner being able to move on in his life. The way that man was treated in Boston was an absolute disgrace. All those "fans" whom made his life hell should be ashamed of themselves. The man had a borderline hall of fame career and played through numerous injuries. Most players would have already retired but Bill battled on through 1986 batting third and helping the Sox to get to the world series in the first place. Mookie would have beaten him to the bag anyway and frankly, the series was lost after Stanley's wild pitch. Thank you Larry David for finally giving Bill a proper send off. By the way, I have the same feelings of disgust towards my fellow "met fans" whom still hate on Carlos Beltran for not swinging at that curve ball in 2006.

Awesome comment brother, you are a true "fan" you understand the heart these players have. Same disrespect is always thrown the Giants way, and surprisingly by some "fans". Yeah right. Not weeks before you had people calling in to KNBR and writing in to trade Morse, and Panda, and dump this guy or that. Unbelievable how much scum is out there. He understood as a sports fan how much Bill had suffered and how much he needed that standing ovation and victorious ride. You so deserved this, Bill Buckner. RIP. I never saw this! So cool. Bill Buckner was one of my favorite players when he was on the Cubs in later 70s. I felt so bad for that play in 86 and worse that I found out he was relentlessly vilified. He became a scape goat and it was very unfair. Even if he fielded the ball, the very fast Mookie Wilson beats him at the bag and the game remains tied (tied up earlier from a wild pitch with Mookie at bat). The Red Sox team fucked up. Manager McNamara fucked up. They fucked up Game 7. Putting all the blame on Buckner is ridiculous. RIP to a fine ball player and human
