In Germany some well established AD’s start to offer “certified pre-owned”. It is not exactly a bargain compared to regular pre owned market, but it is cheaper, and you get peace of mind.

I was there in HK in February and second hand watch prices are still very high even though these shops are suffering a lot from the closure of the borders with china and lack of tourists, I expect prices to drop drastically in the few coming weeks/months, I'm a permanent resident in HK and lived there 8 years before relocating to Germany (now). I bought not less than 50 watches in HK during the years I was based there, established strong connections to the dealers locally but that is a thing of the past, I couldn't even get one sport rolex model from them now at retail, let alone get a 15% regular VIP discount like I used to have, things change and HK is no more the best place in the world to acquire timepieces at a fair price, I think the U.S market nowadays is much much better, especially if you don't have to pay for the state taxes. I miss the old HK, lived there from 2005 till 2014. Cheers

@@UptickWatchReviews Avec plaisir :-) mon dealer avant c'était Carol's watch and Jewelry, le magasin était situé à Harbor City 1er étage en allant vers Burberry, mais depuis 2012 ils ont déménagé à Canton Road juste en face de K11 (au coin de la rue en face de Tsui Wah restaurant) mon vendeur s'appelle Tony, de nos jours ils n'ont que des modèles bas de gamme, sinon mon 2ème dealer se trouve à Mongkok au Rez de chaussée du mall des video games aussi sur canton road (rue parallèle à Sai Yeung choi) j'obtenais toujours les meilleurs prix vu que je parle cantonais couramment et que je connais la ville comme ma poche donc je ne négocie pas difficilement avec les dealers, malheureusement avec la nouvelle politique de Rolex les choses ont beaucoup changé, de nos jours j'achète neuf tout ce qui est Or ou platine chez VIP Watch à Silvercord TST, ils me donnent le meilleur prix sur le marché, pour ce qui est de l'acier (Rolex) c'est les même prix partout, mon instagram WatchCollectorMonaco si tu veux jeter un petit coup d'oeil à ma petite collection, bonne continuation et bon courage à HK, je viendrais séjourner dans mon appartement quelques jours quand les restrictions de voyager seront levés, j'habite à Happy Valley Blue Pool Road juste avant le Lycée Français. Thank you for posting these videos. I’ve only been to HK three times and the way things have been developing I’m not sure when I will ever have a chance to be back. This is very sad because I love visiting HK. At least I can feel as though I’m window shopping with your assistance. ;-) I found it interesting that there were many Patek models but I didn’t see the very popular 5164. And also I agree with your comments about who knows how long some of these watches have been sitting there and what condition the movements are in. Always buy the dealer. And if you don’t have a trusted dealer it’s best to buy from an AD or brand boutique. Thanks again!

So what you're saying is a great argument for buying from ADs and boutiques. I love shopping second hand or vintage as much as anyone but in recent years, after having been keeping up on market trends for about a little over 20 years and watching the explosion of internet traders along with the proliferation of amazingly good fakes, my conclusion is an AD is the safest bet you can make. Sure you probably won't get a deal you *think* you might get compared to second hand/grey market, but you're getting peace of mind, sometimes an extended warranty for free offered by the AD in addition to the manufacturer warranty, manufacturer swag AND you'll be establishing a relationship for future purchases on those "hard to get watches". Plus, with some brands, you actually might get an amazing deal if they're blowing out the brand from their store or trying to get rid of an old stock piece (usually the case with Girard Perregaux 😂) Today I went to an AD and spotted a new (NOS?) Panerai 685, which is a special edition from 2017 (don't ask me why they still had one - probably a testament to Panerai's diminishing popularity) and I negotiated up to a 17% discount which is not too bad for a Panerai NIB special edition from an AD. Ended up not getting it but late last year I bought a Vacheron Overseas Dual Time from them so at least they took me a bit more seriously. (note to newbies: Don't EVER say "What's your best price?" - guaranteed way to NOT be taken seriously 😁) And as far as vintage goes, regardless of how reputable the dealer is, it's always going to be a toss of the dice. And try to *REALLY* know your shit. Anyway, thanks for the insights and videos. We'll have to get some beers next time I'm in HK - been going there pretty regularly since 1998. I won't pay for your company like a whore (Austin Daniels😉) but I will buy you a beer or two.

Thanks for the video....Actually I love to window show in TST (Union u showed) and Mong Kok, whenever I visit. So seeing current pricing is a good reference to where things are...Union had a Hulk $98k w/o warr card as normally they will say on the display...Saw a VC Chrono (older ref) that was cheaper than USA....so again a good reference point.

The one on the right is the Hulk I mentioned in the video. On the left is a Kermit. I spent ten minutes hesitating in front of that window. Normally the Hulk premium is higher so I did find a very good price there but at the end of the day, it’s still a silly price.

That’s a great question and I am also considering it. There are different angles to answer. The start retail price is not exorbitant but high enough to keep it out of the common casual buyer’s reach. The size also is a deterrent to many. However it is produced in low numbers apparently so that will help holding value. Tough to predict the future. At retail I’d go for it. I almost grabbed a used one at just above retail. It sold fast so I think the appetite is there. Who knows what Rolex will do but this is a super quality watch that ticks all the boxes so it should always keep good value.

Long-standing German ADs are sending pieces straight to HK as well. In fact a lot of pieces hitting the dealers come from outside HK. But yeah, HK ADs have stopped selling sports of any metal at retail. You gotta BEG them to let you pay MARKET prices directly, alternatively they bill anyone in their family and sell right out the door at premium, fully stickered. Insanity.
