The algorithm has given this video its blessing. I watched Raycevick make a detailed thrashing of the entire racing genre as it stands today, and it convinced me that it's about time I check out the racing games of yore, so I appreciate this video as a quick run down of what to expect. No one told me Auto Modellista has different handling in international releases. I also noticed that I've only watched one video on Test Drive, and every other racing game video I've watched never talks about that series. Despite the high praise Test Drive Unlimited got, it appears that no one remembers it over older Need for Speed games, and it might have been overshadowed by Burnout Paradise. I can't personally tell you if that particular game is good, let alone the series, but it is on my list.

Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 is difficult to get used to and not a lot of stuff is explained well. I'm not sure if I would recommend it as a fling, but I certainly would to anyone who wants a challenge. The A.I suck and aren't that tough, but driving clean and improving that little bit, taking good lines feels good. Learning the courses can be tough if you just try to challenge racers instead of practice. Knowing what upgrades to use is really important, as is setting up the car. Some cars are pretty good even without adjustments, like the CR-X and Mazdaspeed Miata. At least until you add too much power. Canards and the GT wing (you have to adjust it!) can be a game changer.
@Fastminer07 Жыл бұрын
Even though I'm a big fan of TXRD2, I gotta admit it took me playing the game on and off for nearly 6 years before I finally got the handling properly. When it comes to recommendations from that era, here's a short list I'd suggest: Ford Racing 2 - yes it's manufacturer specific, but they do manage to fit in a decently large car list into a game with good physics, an interesting progression, and enough content to sink at least a dozen or so hours into it. Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift - if you thought D2 was too sim, this definitely fixes that, but it has it's own quirks, and has a little bit less depth than 2. NASCAR Thunder 2004 - Even if you don't like NASCAR, this has plenty to offer in terms of engaging gameplay and depth, although it is a bit more on the sim-cade side. If you're willing to go up to the PS3/360 gen, I'd also suggest Midnight Club LA, Forza Horizon, and Dirt 2 and 3
@squiddythekid3976 Жыл бұрын
I did play a little bit of Dirt 3 several years ago and remember having a positive opinion on that. I kinda limited myself to the PS2 era for this video as it's easier to emulate than the following generation (but even that's making strides) I'll definitely take a look at these games!

I'd recommend the Synetic games, namely: -World Racing 2 -Crash Time series (please don't use the English dub, it's very bad) All their games from 2003-2012 (they shut down) have incredible handling/physics and very impressive damage models, even before the likes of GTA 4. Despite the lower budget, they almost never look, sound nor feel lacking compared to the AAA titles of the time. There's definitely that sense of "German quality" in them. Trackmania is a lot of fun, it's not just an ultra competitive series of games where drive the same old formula car in the same old boring stadium. I'd recommend: -TM United (Forever) - best one out of the box, the most variety and content out of all the games Test Drive Unlimited is like a FH game but with a greater sense on lifestyle. You actually go to to dealerships to buy cars, bikes and houses (and clothes for your character, but who cares about that). The first game with the motion blur and camera shake cranked to the max has some of the best sense of speed in any racing game. Speeding towards a wall as you momentarily lose control of your car feels genuinely terrifying.

the main issue i have had with TXRD2 is that the FWD and AWD cars dont turn, you have to try cars that are RWD like a silvia or a coupe levin, longer wheelbase cars and light weights are what i used, and the main thing you have to do is learn how to oversteer, you have to constantly drift your car to make the car turn, instead of understeer, meaning, FWD is mediocre, and AWD forces you to lock the rear diff and open the front

If you’re still interested in playing racing games from the PS2 era, I can recommend a few (all of them Hot Wheels games): 1. Hot Wheels: World Race - This game is a very loose adaptation of the Highway 35 movie released in the same year (2003). And I recommend it solely for its handling/physics; Cars feel weighty, but responsive, which makes drifting, performing mid-air stunts, and moving in general feel not only predictable, but incredibly satisfying to do. The biggest potential issue with this game is that unlocking all the cars and tracks can be rather slow and a bit on the grindy side. 2. Hot Wheels: Stunt Track Challenge - Another game in the same vein as World Race, but with a more game show-based aesthetic. Which means that on top of standard races, you also get a bunch of small mini-games and bonus challenges; Stuff like top-down mini-maze races, tower climbs, long/high-jump challenges, etc. And you can customize the cars you collect throughout the game with wheels, decals, and different paint colors. 3. Hot Wheels: Velocity X - If you’ve played games like Twisted Metal, Spy Hunter, or Vigilante 8, then you’ll find Velocity X to be comfortably similar to them (though with an obvious Hot Wheels twist on things). The big draw for this game is the Adventure Mode, which sees you take on the role of Max Justice, a 17-year-old driving prodigy, as he attempts to stop a mad scientist named Otto Von Diesel (and his henchmen) from taking over the world using old science projects created by him and Max’s father. (It’s very much like a Saturday morning cartoon, and in the best ways possible). Like Vigilante 8/Twisted Metal/etc. you choose a car and choose from a variety of weapons and gadgets that you use to blow away enemy cars or blast past them, while completing objectives in an open world that is slowly unveiled to you through the story. There’s also a bunch of challenges you can complete in both the open world and outside the main story that will reward you with more gadgets and cars.

the TXR3 bug that prevents it from being 100% isn't even bad because the thing that prevents the 100% is side content. You can play the Europe version of Auto Modellista to play the better handling model. It's that easy. Also: Play Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero. It's better than 3, anyway. Like with most Genki games, you absolutely must do a lot of experimenting with the tuning to make your setup work for you. This filters a lot of people but also provides a lot of depth (I like my tuning very aggressive and oversteery but you would want some settings like rear suspension softer than front and brake bias towards the front.)

New subscriber, time to binge this entire channel! From your commentary, I can see I have similar feelings towards racing games, especially as of recent. And that rubberbanding is a pet peeve of yours, which is.. With how widely hated rubberbanding is, it surprises me how developers still shoehorn the heck out of it into their games. As for a suggestion, I could attempt to present NFSU2 as it's now considered abandonware. With a couple patches to run it on a modern system (Widescreen support and the lot) it could be interesting. The rubberbanding and difficulty is a big step forward from the first Underground, and it's much less obnoxious at lower difficulties (Of which there's no shame in preferring) Though Gran Turismo 4 could be an option, if a capture card is available; or emulation is an option on the table. There have been some movement in the community lately, with the randomizer mod being released (Absolute blast, in my experience) and "Spec II" on its way to being finished (A big QoL mod that aims to fix most issues people have with the game).

The handling is a bit too easy, especially compared to the sublime RR5, but it is PACKED with content and progression (including every track from RR1-5 afaik). Looks and sounds amazing as well. PSP emulation doesn't require a bios. there's another RR on PSP that came first, but all of its content was included in RR2. Here's some of my picks for the games that I enjoyed: - Rally Trophy - with one caveat: the progression is stupid, but the gameplay itself is fun) - Colin McRae Rally 2004 and 2005 - Both great, 2005 has a lot more content than 2004 I feel - Need for Speed: The Run - Great one time experience, also it showed one of Need for Speed's greatest attributes: the sense of immersion. There is so much drama, it is so fun. - Need for Speed: Shift and Shift 2 - Again, a lot of drama. But this time, make it a racing sim. - Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed - I was surprised about how in-depth the customization was. When I was a kid, I used to just fool around in "quick race" mode, but the career is amazing - Street Legal Racing: Redline - Good on its own, better with mods. Just make sure to get some ready-made modpacks, which have been proven to be stable, this game does not like it when you load too many mods. - Trackmania United Forever: this game is so old, but it still has so much content and the community is still active after all of these years. P.S.: I'd suggest playing TXRD2 on an emulator, using a keyboard. It was really enjoyable, at least for me.

Another option is Test Drive Eve of Destruction for Xbox or PS2. Think of it as a Wreckfest predecessor, but it has a great career mode that has you manage a garage of beater racecars.

Games worth checking out if you somehow get to play it, Project Gotham racing 4. I did enjoy the previous titles too but PGR 4 was very impressive and it's shocking that we never got a PGR 5. I remember spending a lot of time on Midtown madness 2, but as a pure racer it's more average. It's mostly just to explore the cities in free roam. You can get a few hours of fun from it and it's abandonware from what i remember so it's free. Enthusia professional racing was also a hidden gem, but by this point i think you've heard about it and maybe played it. World racing 2 is fun and good collection of cars, the difficulty on certain races is my only issue with it.

Definitely heard good things about the PGR games Midtown Madness 2 might be something fun for one of the XP computers I have I know about Enthusia, but am hesitant a bit because of the handling on controller What is World Racing 2?
@zippo71111 Жыл бұрын
@@squiddythekid3976 It's a racing game with various cars, some rarely seen in other games. It also has free roam and much content, only issue for me was the ai. It's on steam. World racing 1 on the other hand was similar but only contained Mercedes, still it was a blast to play in the past and driving around the mountains was quite the experience at the time. Enthusia wasn't too difficult to adapt to on a controller, it's a bit different compared to many racers at that time but i think you would like it once you get the hang of it. PGR 4 is a must play if you get the chance, it holds up well even today.

@@tropixx_xlr1549 Completely forgot about the mods. Yes last time i checked there was a ton of them. Only thing to be aware of is to not install too many mods before booting up the game. If I may make a recommendation The MotorStorm games hold up very well in modern times. Although Apocalypse was primarily online so much of the game is not available now. The first two are considered peak of the franchise. I’ve put thousands of hours into the series, nothing quite did or has done the same as those game did. Another, modern game - TrailOut. A spiritual successor to the FlatOut games. Super campy characters and somewhat odd handling physics but overall you can really tell it is a passion project.

Need For Speed Underground 1 tbh has aged poorly. It is not a good racing game IMO. I kinda wish Capcom would remake or rerelease Auto Modellista. I'd like to see how far the RE engine can be pushed for more cartoon-y graphics and if it can handle a racing game. Need For Speed Most Wanted is always a good time and has probably aged the best of all the Black Box NFS games. I personally find High Stakes a fun NFS game and no rubberbanding from what I remember. There's the older GT games like others have suggested. Race Driver:Grid is pretty fun albeit kinda difficult. The Dirt series is also fun. The Motorstorm games are fun and the game Split/Second is the most unique racing game released in the last two decades IMO.

Split/Second and Blur on the PS3/Xbox 360. Not sure of the Carmageddon series is up your alley. Wreckfest and Horizon Chase are two good recent titles. Horzion Chase is a neat little racer inspired by Outrun and Top Gear for the SNES.

Colin McRae Rally, DIRT (anything except 4 and 5), or my fav series so far, GRID (1st game's the best one considered by many, following up with latest entry Legends. You might wanna try 2, but its handling's more arcade-y, if you wanna lean into that). Or art of rally. Besides the weird camera, it's an awesome rally game about rally.

@@squiddythekid3976 any controller works that has analogue triggers and sticks but just make sure you have an analouge button or key set on the emulator so you can turn on analogue controls, you'll know its done correct cause on the options menu when you change your controls it will be a ps2 pad and when confirming control layouts it will ask you to set your pressure sensitivity on both acceleration and braking to either light medium or heavy both being independent like how a cars brake pedal is harder to press than the throttle pedal (make sure to set X and [] to be your analogue accel and brake buttons cause in game you can't set triggers/r2+l2 as gas and brake). The game was designed with analogue controls in mind since your car controll is tied to your throttle control press and hold select during a race to view your telemetry so you can see how much gas brake and steering angle you're applying on the controller cause cars like the solare and E.O require you to essentially handle them like a real car with how you control your gas and brakes

NFS Hot Pursuit 2 was always my favorite racing game. I got it during my peak Nostalgia years though, so that may be a big reason why it's always been so important to me. The Soundtrack for that game is hands down one of the best of all time, I find myself jamming the playlist almost every trip I take. The Flat-out series of games are incredibly fun, some of my favroites. Tokyo Extreme Racer Zero was another one back in the peak days, I look back on it very fondly but havent played it in so long. Another one is Sega GT 2002 for the Original Xbox. Again, something about that menu music, and the UI, and pretty much the whole vibe of that game has never been surpassed for me. Awesome list, I clicked because I am also bored of Forza, gonna try to track down Shox. Got a new sub here, great content! *Edit Had to come back and recommend Stuntman for the Playstation 2. It is phenomenal, so unique. The Sequel is very good too, but not quite the same as the first. A couple other classic ones; Juiced, Smugglers Run, Driver and Driver 2.
