I've been in a few nursing homes and Larry's conversation with Richard is spot on what I see with old guys. So my ex had one that appears to be the same make and model of garbage can exactly. It works super poorly because you have to stuff the excess bag in a toothed ring designed to hold the bag in place. Whenever you take that shit out of there, it would always rip a hole in the bag. So I can see why they don't use it. ALSO she gave me what appeared to be the old, beat up version of the same can, so the one her family actually used, but got rid of for looks reasons. It made the scene extra funny for me. An "Oops, it has a dent, so now it's entirely worthless to me." kind of rich people keeping up appearnaces sort of way to be.

Back in the 60s, in my parents NYC apartment, we didn't even use liners in our garbage can, no one did! Little yellow can with chrome top. You'd press a little pedal with your foot to open it. We had an elevator man, and a working fireplace but no AC in summer! Lead paint everywhere, too much steam heat, all for like $400/month, rent controlled.
