Yes he's very talented w/his hands. Qestion: I just got my two parakeets and they are very wild. The person who got the male really got a workout from him. Other still very scared too, but easier to catch. Need to take to vet as after a few weeks noticed something strange with feet. I have very low vision from surgeries so don't see well. Any suggestion how to catch them in cage without them hurting themselves against cage. Can bearly put food & water in cage w/o panicking & changing their bottoms is a nightmare no matter what with talking in soft tones to them when removing pan very slowly still they are panicky.& fly around. Try to interact as much as possible but still quite wild. Thanks really appreciate it.

Doctor, my Cockatoo has scaley face mites. I've had a terrible time with them as well, despite what many believe. After considerable research, I noticed the white flaky stuff (almost like shed snakeskin except in flakes) on my sweet companion's face and it all came together. I USED to bring in nice pecan tree branches for her to chew on, totally ignorant of the possibility of bringing in parasites! Having an, as yet undiagnosed immune problem, I now know those of us who have this can also be very susceptible to such parasites. I have found almost NOTHING across the net about this sort of thing. Thank you for the great info!

If you apply it on the back of the neck the bird cannot reach it and eventually digest ist in its pure form, its an oily substance which is supposed to be sucked in by the birds skin not orally. That said, it is safer to put it on the neck-skin.

Do the birds not showing symptoms need to be treated for 3 weeks or is one application sufficient?
@XYZ-xc1qi3 ай бұрын
Your website says: "Avimec ... is safe to use in conjunction with food additives and supplements and with other oral medications." This implies that it can be used orally (or, at the very least, that it is not intrinsically toxic). Other websites also state that Ivermectin can be added to a bird's food. My two questions are as follows. First, is there any reason that Avimec cannot be given orally? For instance, does the product contain some ingredient that would be toxic if consumed (even at the correct dosage)? Second, if the product is not toxic, why does your video focus only on application to the skin? I am guessing that the answer to both questions is that it's a licensing issue, not a medical issue (i.e., that the product is approved only for topical use). For context, an elderly family member who lives in regional Tasmania, far from a vet, has two budgies with a terrible scaly mite infection. The family member is not confident about handling the birds, and wants to add a drop to the food. It would be easy to separate the birds at feeding time, ensuring precise dosing. Oral dosing is the only realistic option, so if the medication cannot be given orally, the birds will continue to suffer. Thank you for the great video.
@ArrayanStrider11 жыл бұрын
I've recently purchased Ivermectin 0.1% for treating scaly face mites on budgies and it says to apply the medicine to the back of the neck between the shoulder blades of the budgie. I was wondering if it makes any difference with this particular med to apply it to the top of the thigh like you showed in the video or it has to be to the back of the neck?
@Believer24012 жыл бұрын
Not advisable behind the neck, as you can accidently choke the bird when holding it. I used recently and very easy to apply to the upper thigh where there are no feathers.

Hi! I have 7 budgies in total. They are kept in a large spacious cage in a warm area. When I was getting my 4th budgie off a local breeder I realised there was a tiny sore/ scab like thing on the side of its beak. I assumed it was a scab from frighting with its fellow flock mates but as time passed by I realised that it had gotten worse. There are large coral/ wart like growths that are a white shade on the sides of its beak. Build up on its cere and it’s a growth that is slowly making its way down its beak. Does my description sound like scaly face???. I’ve also noticed that all 7 of my budgies tend to spend a lot of their time scratching and itching away at their chest and under their wings. I plan on purchasing avimec and hopefully it will clear these issues. I forgot to mention that the ‘infected’ budgie has some Breathing issues including tail bobbing and breathing through the mouth. I hope that you and the avimec can help me out as I have a breeding box in my large cage and I have pairs of budgies that are bonded and ready to breed. Thank you!!

How can I treat the hyperkeratosis in my. Budggie??
@vetafarm5 жыл бұрын
Hyperkeratosis is non-pathogenic and occurs a lot in female budgerigars around breeding season. The cere will flake off and go back to normal if this is the case 😊 It may also be linked to a vitamin deficiency, so depending on the diet your bird is currently on, it may be a good idea to feed a balanced pellet and/or a vitamin and mineral supplement. If you are still unsure/worried about it, we would recommend taking your bird to a veterinarian.

What is the youngest age you would recommend treating budgies with Avimec I have some 6wk old Chicks and 16wk old chick that I would like to treat as they have been exposed to the rest of the avairy and some of the older birds are showing signs of scaly face again (I suspect they get it ffrom the wild finches that sit on thier cage
@vetafarm7 жыл бұрын
Vetafarm recommend not to treat before fledgling age. Avimec can be very straining on developing kidneys and livers so baby birds are not recommended to have Avimec.

I think when I was a kid one of our parakeets had this on his cere and I kept picking it off. I didn't know what it was and I think it eventually went away. I think I need this medicine for my face and rosacea or demodex mites. I've heard so many stories of people curing their diseases with animal medicine

Would the scaly face mite transfer from a budgie to quaker parrot that lived in the same home?
@vetafarm9 жыл бұрын
+Amina Stella Hi, although it is not common in other species of bird, it is a possibility that the mite can transfer.

Hi, I have two budgies that I bought off of a local breeder and I wanted to clarify if one has scaly face mite or not. He has pale crust on the outline of his cere, and his beak has crust on and around his beak and small parts of his feet. Also the small fuzzy feathers above his cere have seemed to be falling out showing small portions of his skin above his cere. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Hi, thank you for your comment! Birds can be affected by many types of illness and parasites. It sounds like it may be Scaly Face Mite, however we would recommend taking the bird to a veterinarian for a diagnosis. :)

Ordered Avimec from pets megastore. Applied first dosage yesterday what are the recovery signs. Will his deformed toe heal and scales on the legs. Vetafarm please help
@vetafarm5 жыл бұрын
Hi Prasad, thank you for contacting us! You will need to repeat the application weekly for three doses, ensuring that you treat all birds in the aviary. Full recovery may take up to 6 weeks. Recovery should kill the mite, preventing the scales from getting any worse. Depending on the severity of the deformation, it may or may not correct.

Hi there, thank you for your comment. Full recovery from scaly face mite can often take up to 6 weeks. We recommend treating all birds to reduce the risk of retransmission.

@vetafarm6 жыл бұрын
Hi Trina, thank you for contacting us! This is quite a safe treatment but as with all treatments, there is a level/amount at which you can begin to see toxic effects. We will need to know approximately what weight the bird is, what kind of bird it is, and the amount of Avimec that you used on it. :)
@trinaedwards92306 жыл бұрын
a budge normal size i did not know you were supsed to use a few drops only i was told by the pet shop to use a cotton bud and paint the stuff all over her face and then drop it on to the body so it would have been way to much from what you said at first she just went black on the body were i had done it but she seams to be making a recovery not so bad today less so. i think she will live after all but i was so worryed when she went black . i wont ever use to much again do you need to reaply at any time with this . it is the product you are speaking about alimax

Okay Trina, your budgie should be okay. Given the overdose, we would recommend waiting 14 days and then applying 2 drops as detailed in this video.

i have a question vetafarm birds r loosing feathers near the beak and ear area is that the mites which r doing this? neither thy r molting nor thy r plucking there feathers thy r just removing by there own. and secondly what is the difference between avimac and scatt? plx plx answer
@vetafarm7 жыл бұрын
Hello, that could possibly be a mite problem, or it could be a bacterial or yeast infection of the skin, but I recommend treating for mites first to be sure that it is not that. Avimec is an ivermectin based product were Scatt is moxidectin based.
@farhanzafar23447 жыл бұрын
+Vetafarm i used scatt and thank god thy have stopped loosing feathers. but my question now is should i use scatt after 21 days for treatment. kindly tell how to use for future because i m confused should i use it one dose for 21 days and then after 21 days should i use it again. thanks a lot u r awesome. awesome
@vetafarm7 жыл бұрын
You apply Scatt again at 21 days if they are still having problems, if they do not have problems, then you can just use Scatt when needed. Perhaps apply once every 6 months as a preventative and always treat new birds when they are in quarantine.

Hello, I have 2 budgies (one of them is 9 months old, the other 4 months old) I had the oldest one alone for a few days, and she wasnt sick or anything and isnt now either. I went to a pet store and bought a friend to her, a male. He is 4 months old (thats what the pet store said) and they said he was completely fine and wasnt sick at all. When I got home with him he was completely fine and I didnt notice anything weird, but today (I got him yesterday) I saw something weird on the side of his beak, he has no feathers around the beak and it looks like some white/light brown stuff around it. Theres also this brown/white looking thing under his cere. He eats and drinks and flies around the room and looks good other than that, but it really worries me. Can you help me?
@vetafarm7 жыл бұрын
Your description sounds like it could be a number of things, I would recommend taking your bird to a veterinarian for confirmation. If it is Scaly Face Mite, it should clear up quickly with treatment with Avimec.
