Curing our 152k mile E92 M3's vague steering feel - Front Suspension Refresh

When we initially drove our 152,000 mile E92 M3 we were less than impressed by its handling abilities. A big part of this was how vague the steering feel was, inspiring no confidence as you enter a corner. This was something that desperately needed to be fixed.
Parts Breakdown:
TRW Front Control Arms - £160 - 31102283575 / 31102283576
TRW Rear Control Arms - £140 - 31102283577 / 31102283578
TRW Tie Rods - £80 - 32102283461 / 32102283462
Lemforder Tie Rod Ends - £90
BMW ARB Drop Links - £100 - 31352283441 / 31352283442

Amazing series! I’ve been watching up till now and it’s literally given me all the confidence I need in deciding if I really wanted to get an E92 M3 as I’m a Honda guy. I’ve always loved bmw but never had the pockets to support it but now that things have become better for me money wise I’ve had my eyes on the e92 again but was very skeptical about the maintenance until seeing all of your e92 videos! I can say thanks to you and the shop that helped restore the car have given me the green light to start saving for one. Cheers👍

Loving this series, guys! I refreshed the front control arms and sway bar links on my E92 M3 as well (at 60K miles) and it made a HUGE difference. Didn't change out the tie rods but will likely do that at 85-90K. Haven't done anything yet to the rear but I sometimes feel a bit of looseness back there as well, so looking forward to your next vid. Which rear links do you plan to replace?
@EvolveAutomotive
@EvolveAutomotive 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ari! Tie Rods will definitely help with the steering feel. Truthfully we plan to replace every part of the rear suspension, but will start with the two easy arms, before moving on to the more difficult to change ones along with the subframe bushes themselves.

So you CAN reliably bring back to life a very high mileage BMW like that. Either buy an older one, spend the money to rejuvenate it. Or buy a low mileage car and not worry as much. Choice appears to be pay the butcher's bill now or later.

Happy to see they got the TRW, the price is right. I have these on my e92 335i with an M3 sway, Dinan camber plates, and Bilstein coil overs and the steering is significantly better than stock while still riding great. (Can’t say the same for those who delete the factory strut mounts) Also tip, if you are putting these in your 335i it will be hard to get them in. Hammer the subframe once on each corner outward and they will slide right in.

170,000 miles on my E91. It took me 5 hours for 1 side as DIY, but that included changing out the strut using the dreaded spring compressor! ;-) My top strut mount definitely needed replacing as well. I usually keep my BMWs for 250k miles. May have to keep my 2009 Touring longer because there aren't any wagons on the road that look as good!

#Aston was awesome in the latest 007 Bond Film No Time to Die #AstonMartinDB Ana de Armas' scene was the only other highlight. My BMW E90 M3 has 190k miles, so I am due for a refresh for XMAS. Next time you get an oil change, have the tech check all your control arms for excess wear and play. One tip: Do the rear suspension first and then the front suspension, so you only need to do the wheel alignment once. They make upgraded rear trailing arms (w and w/o spherical bushings -- very hard to press in and out on the car). The BMW parts are made to buckle, so the gas tank doesn't puncture in a rear end collision. Once the rear suspension is done, then I can add the Varis carbon fiber undertray and rear diffuser. Note that Aston also replaced the sway bar rubber bushings and links. Very important to also do the tie rods, not just the control arms. Would have been nice to also install stainless steel brake lines...for great brake pedal feel.

Poly would be a downgrade from spherical and is not suitable for the rubber one. The only upgrade would be a spherical. Poly bushes being a blanket upgrade is a misconception. In the case of a factory performance car such as the M3, new OEM bushes are more than sufficient for road use.
