LONG LIVE THE 80s, a decade of catchy melodies, danceable rhythms, synth-pop, new wave, power ballads, iconic music videos, heavy guitar riffs and memorable pop soaring vocals (like the one performed here). A solid decade of spectacular great songs explosion one after another---the likes that we will never see again.

How this was never a hit in the US is totally beyond me. And during the 2nd British Invasion of the '80s when UK acts ruled the charts!
@jt4jt47 ай бұрын
I think they were an example of a band trying to look cool without being cool, unlike several of the bands at the peak of the 2nd British Invasion; when I saw Andy Warhol in their Misfit video, they seemed like the name-droppers that want to appear to be something by association but actually are not. They also didn't have a sound that distinguished them as British; in that regard, I feel like Living in a Box were similar, and they too were something of a flash in the pan.

Curiosity Killed the Cat's "Down to Earth" is more than just a catchy pop-funk track-it's a poignant and thoughtful exploration of the dangers of living in a fantasy world. Released in 1987, a time marked by the rise of pop-funk and the increasing influence of technology on society, the band delivers a subtle yet urgent warning to those who lose touch with reality, wrapped in the guise of a smooth, sophisticated melody. The song can be interpreted as a cautionary tale, where the protagonist desperately tries to reach a family member or friend who has been swept up in delusions, urging them to return to reality before they lose themselves entirely. Lyrically, "Down to Earth" tackles the delicate balance between ambition and delusion, a struggle many of us can relate to. The protagonist's concern about someone blurring the lines between fantasy and the real world becomes a plea that resonates with our own experiences. Lines like "It's a fairy tale to me, but you're in tune" reflect the frustration we've all felt when watching someone drift further into unrealistic dreams. The song calls for a return to practicality and groundedness, a call that we've all heard or made, warning that staying lost in these fantastical delusions could result in real emotional or personal harm. With its repeated refrain of "down to earth," the chorus serves as both a literal and figurative call to action, underlining the urgency in the protagonist's plea. The protagonist urges their loved one to snap out of the dangerous escapism that's taken hold, reminding them of the importance of staying connected to the realities of life. There's an underlying sense of urgency here-the warning isn't just about keeping a clear head but about avoiding a potential emotional collapse caused by unrealistic expectations or unchecked idealism. Musically, the track's laid-back groove contrasts with its more profound message, creating a unique tension that intrigues the listener. The funk-inspired basslines and polished pop production lend an air of calm sophistication, but beneath the smooth exterior lies a genuine concern. The music reflects a sense of reassurance, as if the protagonist is trying to gently but firmly guide their friend or family member back to a place of balance and realism rather than confronting them with harshness or blame. The instrumentation complements the song's theme, embodying that returning to reality doesn't need a catastrophic fall ("don't want to fall on the razor's edge") but a grounded, thoughtful adjustment. "Down to Earth" is a track that mixes a soulful groove with a profound narrative on the risks of losing oneself to fantasy. Curiosity Killed the Cat delivers an empathetic and wise message-recognizing that while dreams and ambitions are essential, they must be rooted in reality. The song, which was a hit in 1987, served as a reminder to many that staying grounded is crucial and that returning to reality is not a failure but a necessary step to avoid the painful fallout of living in a fantasy. This balance of depth and style, along with its timeless relevance, makes "Down to Earth" a great pop song and a subtly powerful piece of social commentary that significantly impacted the band's career and the music industry. Just my two cents. - Lefty Stratocaster
