CS From the US here; The UK Bands that supplied innovative Twists on Dance/ R&B w/ touches of rock is highly under-appreciated and a Lost art Form that Curiosity, Go West, LEVEL 42, Spandau Ballet, ABC & others perfected and to an equally important extent, Duran Duran, Kajagoogoo, Frankie GTH, Depeche Mode, Naked Eyes, The Reflex, Wang Chung, Tears FF, Thomas Dolby, Gary Numan, Howard Jones, Nik Kershaw, Pet Shop Boys, Thompson Twins, & Paul Hardcastle, as well as Veterans to a certain extent "Post Roxy Music" BRYAN FERRY, Bowie, Queen, YES, The Police & a host of Black British artists headed by IMAGINATION, along w/ Loose Ends & Five Star; Happy Mondays, Brand New Heavies, D' Influence and JAMIROQUAI were the Last of a Dying Breed, though there's been a couple of similar acts; the fusion of Keyboards w/ instruments in US / Canadian funk is Non-Existent, and to Your Point, BEN V, w/ his "Low Toned" vocals, similar to Martin Fry (ABC), Richard Darbyshire (LIVING IN A BOX) Ferry, Tom Bailey (T. TWINS) & in Contrast to George Michael, Limahl (Kajagoogoo), Dr. Robert (BLOW MONKEYS) Peter Cox (GO WEST) Tony Hadley (SPANDAU BALLET) and Leee John (IMAGINATION), is under-valued w/ his cabaret-style delivery... like the SADE Song, he's a... CS From the US here; this is the New Wave Funk that's Under-Rated for it's Innovation and Continuation of US R&B that was beginning to Fade REAL DRUMS, Bass / Guitar playing & Slick Synths that Mirrored Fellow UK Acts, LEVEL 42, Go West, ABC, Living In a Box, before the emergence of JAMIROQUAI, Happy Mondays, & so on; The 1st Single posted here (MISFIT) was one of a Solid if not Perfect Set of Songs from the Debut Album, prior to their follow-up record "GETAHEAD"(1989) a more complete, / Polished Masterpiece, and one of the Best Albums made in any Funk Era in the UK or US / Canada & Overall in Music History; It's also one of the Best that didn't Sell as Many Units as it Should Have like SIMPLY RED, the aforementioned bands, and others would go on to Achieve; When you want to Drop a Bomb on those who are... un-aware, CKTC's "Getahead", any ABC record, GO WEST's "Dancing on the Couch" & so on are the most Powerful Weapons to Blast & Kill the Belief that UK Funk, particularly from the 80's, was Horribly average; Curiosity KTC, and the Great Musicians from this region Prove, w/ o a Doubt, that it's a Myth....

FACTS; CS from the US here & Avid Historian of UK Funk; the bands from that New Wave / Funk era that carried on for a brief time in the 90's w/ JAMIROQUAI, Happy Mondays, Brand new Heavies, etc. are highly under-rated, The Fusion of Synths w/ instruments is Non-existent, particularly in the US, where the CHIC. Cameo, Slave, GQ, Earth W&F full-set Bands were beginning to Fade before the 1990's; I'm all for / support/ like electronic Depeche Mode, The Shamen, Kraftwerk, Pet Shop Boys type acts, but it's become Too Programmed / Homogenized, and to a great extent, Less Innovative than the aforementioned, and the THOMAS DOLBY, Howard Jones, ABC, & "early" US Electro Dance from Soul Sonic Force, Egyptian Lover, Jonzun Crew, etc. And to Your Point, Curiosity, others like them, or aforementioned Similar acts along w/ GARY NUMAN, Bowie, Bryan Ferry "post Roxy"& so on, are more Historically Relevant & Timeless w/ their Creativity than they're given credit for... the Notion music from that era as I posted (@ CS RACING REPORT Above) was Average is a Myth... The Hybrid of Technology & Instruments w/ variations on themes from these Ground-Breaking Acts is, to say the least... Stunning

CS from the US; You'll Really Like the 2nd Record "Getahead" if you Don't Already have it; Absolute Gem; More Polished, Incredible songs/ Musicianship, and arguably the Best Album of the New Wave / Funk Era in the UK, the US/ Canada/ worldwide, and of any Genre / era in history; Stands Out amongst the more "Direct" UK R&B tinged Acts like the 2nd & 1st LP's by GO WEST & LIVING IN A BOX, ("Dancing On The Couch" and Self-Titled respectively), "early' LEVEL 42, "Alphabet City" by ABC, all of which Rank higher than the best-selling "Stars' by SIMPLY RED; Shocking that Record Didn't Fly Off Shelves for Curiosity; Poorly promoted; the Only reason I grabbed it was because I'm a Rabid Follower of UK Music, and when Records come out, with or w/ o Airplay, based on Magazines "pre-internet", music shows (Radio/ TV, etc.), and personal List-Keeping; People were and are Still stunned @ the Slickness of it; Great Band; And like the aforementioned, plus Countless others from the UK, Highly Under-Valued.

Correct; CS From the US, a Fan / Historian that Intensely followed the UK Funk/ New wave scene when our family came back to the States after living in Sheffield as a Kid; the 2nd LP "Getahead" was and Still is arguably if not clearly, the best Funk album of the Decade, and of any Era in any Genre of Music; Stands out w/ any ABC record, the Highly Innovative" Dancing On the Couch "by GO WEST, the Debut LP by LIVING IN A BOX, both bands on the Same label as SPANDAU BALLET (Chrysalis); it's also on a par w/ a few of the LEVEL 42 albums and "post 80's" JAMIROQUAI's best when rating Bands w/ a More "Direct" R&B Funk style w/ twists, that includes SIMPLY RED, Lisa Stansfield, and the Obvious Black Brit Artists, (Loose Ends, Imagination, Junior, Central Line, etc.), "Pre- SEAL" Stars, and the Acts that Broke With or soon After him in the 90's (Soul to Soul, Angie Stone, Ephraim Lewis etc.) .... Howard Jones, & others employed a touch of New Wave on Funk grooves, be it the Vets GARY NUMAN,Bowie, Ferry Genesis, etc, to the new-comers, Frankie GTH, Kajagoogoo, Scritti Politti, Depeche Mode, T, Twins, Pet Shop Boys, The Fixx, Wang Chung, Naked eyes, NIK KERSHAW, & so on; And to Further Your Point,that whole Genre /Era was highly under-valued, and is more Timeless & Viable than Music that has "trended out" by becoming Too Predictable / Homogenized... The Belief that the Aforementioned Music was Horribly Average is, based on its Staying Power, a Myth; the reason people, particularly in the US, believe otherwise, is, Radio Program Directors didn't understand what these Bands were doing & that Ignorance is why they Don't Think Once to look back & incorporate Singles / Album / "Deep Cuts' into a Retro "Oldies and Really Good Old School" Station format; The Guitar & Synth work of the Past is more Cutting-edge than the typical programmed Hip-Hop/ Pop "beats" of Today As the English & Irish would say what they're hearing on the Radio now is RUBBISH

There's an interesting interview from The Tube with Paula Yates (it is on YT) where they said it took a few them years to find labels that would let them create authentically without being manipulatedn and even then they had to compromise. Given they were just about to release Misfit their second track, it was a great question from Paula and an honest answer from the lads. But I can't help wonder if that sealed their fate. They were Leona Lewis'ed.
@BugRib4 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: They were rivals with a band called “Midnight” that was fronted by Gavin Rossdale of Bush fame. Bush was the biggest rock band in the world for a year or two-and they sounded absolutely nothing like Rossdale’s former band. There are a few videos of Rossdale performing a Midnight song, and it’s unbelievably cheesy in that late 80s kind of way. Bush was pretty much a “grunge” band, at least on their first couple of albums. Midnight was...not grunge at all. 😆🤣😂
