I'm also keeping my windows partition (despite not using it) because I still have a ton of files in it, it's just a data partition now lol. (OBS.: it's not necessary to boot into windows to get the files, just mount it from linux)
@albertfanmingo10 күн бұрын
Whenever my main Linux partition runs out of space I open Windows 11 and just start deleting whatever files I know won't stop it from booting again. I've managed to reduce the system size from around 40 to 25 gigabytes. My goal is to eventually break literally every feature added after 7.

My recommendation for dual-booting: Try doing it in an old PC/Laptop whose data is not important for you and mess around with dual-booting. Try installing, re-installing, uninstalling linux cuz it is not as intuitive as those words sound. You will run into problems with the GRUB bootloader like I did. If you want a safe way to TRY LINUX, go for a virtual machine. If you're ready to switch to Linux, I still suggest you try it in another PC/Laptop that is not your main. Great vid learnix 🦈🤙

At that point where you have an useless severely outdated laptop alongside your main PC, installing Linux is likely the safest or even best way to use it again, without contributing to e-waste! I at least got an old ThinkPad that had Windows 7 in it, until I installed Linux Mint on it. (Though I had already fully switched to Linux Mint on my main gaming PC lol) Btw that ThinkPad didn't cause any boot-up problems. Neither did my main PC. But an EliteBook (about 6 years old) did: For some reason after installing Mint on it, it still tried to boot Windows. Which I learned was the case, because of my temporary solution was to just rename the Linux Mint boot file as Windows's and throw it in the same folder where Windows's boot file would've been, which worked (until Mint had to update). I finally solved it permanently by creating a custom boot option, some that I can't remember how to do right now :P Hopefully this is helpful for others!

by the way that windows killing grub issue I think is mostly a BIOS issue and not a UEFI issue. UEFI bootloaders are typically separate and the best windows does in my experience is try to put itself first, which you can immediately change in the bios settings if something happens.

I know its a very "well actually!"-ass thing to say, but one thing I dislike about describing linux as an operating system is that it keeps the average normie's imagination stuck in the proverbial box. Without needing to thoroughly explain what a kernel is, one description i heard that I really like is fireship's, which goes along the lines of "think of it like a free engine you can use to build a car. Some cars are designed for speed, some for comfort, others for indisutrial functionality, but more importantly, it lets anyone build any kind of car they want". As a result of several decades of nerds developing their own software we have a lot of choice as to what kind of operating system you want for yourself
