I saw this video a few years ago when I was still in HVAC school. I came back to this video again yesterday morning because I got to replace virtually the same motor on virtually the same unit yesterday. Except it was a 20 year old Carrier heat pump. Anyways, funny how I was kinda dreading this repair as I’ve never done one of these bigger 3 phase blower motors on one of these Carriers before. It was surprisingly not that difficult. I discovered that the entire plate (the one that’s about the size of the blower housing) that the motor mount plate adjuster plate (whatever it’s called) comes off, making the job a thousand times easier. And luckily for me, the factory tape holding those bolts in was still intact. And you weren’t kidding about the motor weighting about 1,700 lbs. the only difficult part of the job was roping up that heavy ass motor 40 ft up onto the roof, and trying to figure out my new belt tensioner tool that one of our controls guys gave me the day before (because he didn’t need it anymore lol).

The refresh rate of the camera made the blower pulley look like it was turning slowly. In reality, the blower pulley is turning much faster.

I once built up a portable fan for a large building which had no A/C. The motor was a 1.5hp 3-phase large frame motor from a 1940s air compressor, and the fan itself was sitting in the back of another building with a terribly undersized motor on it. Despite one of the pillow blocks on the fan being terribly worn the thing ran like a top. BTW that kind of metal doesn't crack, it tears.

How big of a fan are we talking- 4 foot in diameter? also how did the 1940s motor hold up?

Bearing was likely just shielded and the belt dust mixed with the grease to make a wedge that caused the rollers or balls to slide at speed. Conversely to what people will try to sell or think bearings shouldn't be low friction. They exist to bear a load, hence the name. A good bearing should be smooth but stop fairly quickly from the grease drag. And you can over grease some bearings and cause them to slide instead of roll. (Hence why you don't grease garage door roller tracks)

I noticed when you were hanging the new motor and plate back onto the machine you did not show how you got those upper mounting bolts back into the slot, and hold them while lifting the motor onto those bolts. How did you accomplish that because it takes me both hands just to lift that heavy motor into place much less hold and align the bolts to the motor mount plate. Thanks

@@curioushvacguy6876 more time to drive in town to get them than change them. Small puller and they pop right off. I keep a small plate of steel on my van. I put the bearing on the steel and heat it with a map gas torch underneath. You can use a melt stick to tell when its hot enough. Throw it on the shaft and let it cool. The steel plate I only use on small bearings. Mid sized and bigger just best to get a oven or induction heater. I guess it just depends on your labor rate if its worth the time.
@mountain177
@mountain177 4 жыл бұрын
It's not a terrible job to do. Essentially you take the 4 long bolts loose, pull out the front, on the shaft there are 2 press on bearings. Sand and clean the shaft of the motor, grab your puller and zip each bearing off. Grab a deep well socket or something like that maybe even a piece of pipe and hammer or press on the new bearings.

@@curioushvacguy6876 that same vintage unit is at one of the factorys I go to. Not even 3 years old. Cooling only for a garage so it only runs when its really hot. Anything close to comfortable outside and they shut it off and open all the doors. Bottom line very little run time. Same issue shaft bearing wiped out. Its pathetic. I was a blonde one from mounting the motor over on the sled to get the sheave closer to the motor, but in the end, I ended up putting better bearings in it and stuck it back where it was. I'm curious to see if better bearings hold up better in the same situation. Your content is dope man. Thanks.

How do they come up with the tonnage of the unit? Is it the amount of cfms of air flow?
@curioushvacguy6876
@curioushvacguy6876 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott as far as I understand it, the tonnage is in reference to the amount of heat removal the unit is capable of and not the air flow- however there needs to be a certain amount of airflow for the unit to hit that tonnage. For example if its a 2 ton system it is capable of removing 24,000 Btu's of heat energy, one Btu (British thermal unit) is the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of one pound of water one degree. hope that helps
