I have been struggling with CGM recently, I just hit my year mark, and I felt pretty much as clueless as I did on day one. I feel like I've been spending too much time buying and trying new products thinking that it'll fix everything, but I think I need to spend more time trying my current products in different ways. I don't know what about this video was the puzzle piece that I was missing, but I feel like I just had the best wash day in a long time. My waves feel very defined but still soft, and nowhere near my normal amount of frizz. I honestly watched probably four of your videos today "prepping" for my wash day, and who knew that you would upload one today that would be exactly what I needed. Thank you for all that you do!!

@enik8747

@@devinmichelle7503 i used to get that on my left side and my theory is: every time I let my hair down, I would gather all my hair in front of my right shoulder, which means that the left side of my hair would be draped over my neck while the right side hair would be on top. So the left side hair got used to being relatively straight by always being wrapped over my neck (and that becomes hair memory). I've stopped doing that and my left side has improved pretty quickly

I JUST REALIZED - The reason that adding more water when using low-poo shampoo creates more suds is that the shampoo has been rubbed into the scalp a bit (which mixes it with the sebum - natural oils - and dirt), which means the scalp is already cleaner... which means that it's almost as if you're doing a second washing! Once the scalp is cleaner any shampoo will create more suds when water is added! The Blowout Professor (who doesn't focus on curls, but more on creating healthy hair) actually stresses that the first wash, even using a high-poo shampoo, will create less suds because the scalp (and hair) are dirty! I guess the info from both him and Courtney are finally sinking into my thick head (wish my hair was as thick as my head)! lol

it used to be the case for me but i figured that after putting leave in and squishing it in and getting my hair moisturised i just go full willow smith mode and flip my hair back and forth and side to side, and from there on i just rake the products in to get some clumps back and i no longer get messy roots :3 i think its also worth mentioning that my hair is 3b on the bottom ( ringlets which tangle easily if not placed in their right clump group) and also s-waves closer to my roots since my hair is heavy and long

So I tried again today, but before getting my hair wet I brushed all my hair toward the top of my head. From then on, it was where it was supposed to be for wash/condish/ rake etc. It worked SO much better! My hair is fine, almost waist length, so this discovery is a big deal for me. Lol Before today, I had gotten my hair wet before flipping upside down.

My hair is very weird. It’s very thin & fine. I also have lots of cowlicks where the hair grows in different directions. Being so thin & fine they twist around each other easily. Imagine spiderweb threads blowing in the wind. They tangle like crazy! Someone described it as “Fairy Knots”. Prettier description than spiderweb hair. I detangle w/ a conditioner diluted w/ a little water before shampooing, but the shampooing process causes tangles anyway. I don’t pile my hair on top of my head. Even tried the scalp massager brushes other curly gurus use to cleanse. Oh well, it is just hair. There are worse things in the world.

Thank you for the slow down of this technique. I found some place to improve my process. But the step I find my clumps break apart is plopping. I'll have good clumps when I put my hair into the perfect hair towel then when I take it off (after 10min) most of the clumps have broken up. I'm only 2month into CG so maybe it just because my hair is damaged. Any thoughts?
@SwavyCurlyCourtney
@SwavyCurlyCourtney 4 жыл бұрын
Sarah Nichols so I actually had a similar experience with plopping early on doing the CGM. So you might try “microplopping” with your perfect hair care towel. Basically you just scrunch your hair with the towel right to soak up as much excess water as possible after you’ve gotten done applying your products and just just straight into diffusing.

Your videos are incredibly helpful, Courtney. I've never had curl clumps until recently, but so far it's only a couple. I'm also still in the transition stage. Before the CGM, I clarified with sulfates daily and used a deep conditioner or hair mask, due to my hair being so tangled. Couldn't use a regular shampoo and conditioner. This was the only thing that helped. Also blew dry my hair and flat ironed on the highest heat possible (with a heat protectant) for many years. All my products contained silicones. I no longer use sulfates or silicones, I alternate between sulfate free shampoos and cowashes. I lost more hair prior to embracing my waves/curls, now it may be a strand or two. One thing I've noticed and it sounds crazy, now that I don't use heat at all, my gray has disappeared significantly! I read that heat can actually CAUSE gray hair! 🤤

Hmmmmm well that is tricky. First off, I'm super excited you liked how your hair turned out. But, there will be alot more water in you hair when doing with method. I personally plop with a microfiber towel which really really helps take out a ton of the water before diffusing. bit.ly/swavycurlycourtney-towel

Interesting you do use a lot more water than I do. I just recently started watching your videos and also thought you use a lot of product but now I see you use hardly much of it. I don't like leave ins because it seems to kill my curls but I was using much more of it. I've also tried applying gel to totally wet hair and it didn't seem to do much for my curls. Maybe I'll try again. I have 2b curls so I try to stick away from too much product because it weight it down. Going to try kinky curly this week.

Yeah, I totally understand what you mean about leave ins. I used to feel the same way. But I was using the same amount of leave in as rinse out conditioner! Woah! Hahaha, then I tried using a tiny peas worth and it really helped get my curl clumps going!

I don't know how to wash my hair upside down on the shower. 😳 I have Very long hair so I don't even know how that would work. Would I have to do my hair at the very last, after everything else? I know that probably sounds weird, but 40 years of washing right side up can make you question things lol. 🤷‍♀️❤😊

@MsJbreezyy Haha yeah, I've washed my hair upside down standing/leaning over the tub before when I was younger. I'm disabled, so standing or even leaning over the tub is too hard/painful, and not an option for me now, so I have to wash in the shower.

I shampoo and condition standing in the shower doing some squishing. . Wash my body while conditioner sits on my head for a few minutes. Then get more water on my hair and bend over to de tangle , squish to condish more then rinse. Still bending over I dry my body, then apply leave in and stylers adding more water if needed. Plop only long enough to apply body lotion and get dressed. Then diffuse.

I tried this today with my hair right side up with the flipping and extra water. It worked very well! My waves clumped nicely and turned out very nice. I was pleased with the results. My hair is barely wavy and I still question if I'm truly wavy as my hair straightens quite easily, but it's the few ringlets on the under parts of my hair that give me some hope. Thank you for your tips and advice!
@SwavyCurlyCourtney
@SwavyCurlyCourtney 4 жыл бұрын
Yeayy! I'm so glad this worked! You know, I think some curl patterns can be harder to manage depending on the hair texture. And I think fine haired waives have it pretty tough because our hair doesn't really hold its shape well. You might try using slightly more hard hold gel in your hair and see if that helps. Or you might let your hair sit in the cast longer.

I started the CGM about a month ago. I have tried many different methods and watched may different videos. I have even ended up rinsing everything out and starting over because my hair looked so awful. I have tired adding more and more products and twisting and scrunching constantly. And Courtney your method with minimal adjustment such as slightly less combing. It is my first day trying it and I have to say Wow what I difference! This method really helps me to see my hair's full potential at this point. I can't wait to see what my hair will look and how my clumping method will improve in the next few months.

@elizabethjones2
@elizabethjones2 4 жыл бұрын
I believe for smaller clumps you dont need soo much water in your hair so I really like damp styling it's not really damp but its not soaking wet I just style right out of the shower and I stand up. I do flip my head over alot so I can get all the way to root!! I do love Courtney's videos I just style different!! Oh and I am constantly raking and scrunching each product through. I dont do the roping method just rake and scrunch. Hope this helps!

I’m way late to this comment, but have you figured out a solution? I have fine hair, quiet a lot of it but it’s really fine. Have you found that applying products to damp hair instead of soaking wet actually helps? Do you apply leave in conditioner to soaking wet hair and then the rest of your products to damp hair? When I tried the method in the video, I was left with quite a bit of frizz and it seems like a lot of the product didn’t soak into my hair, and maybe it’s because I applied it to soaking wet hair...
@chelseapickslay5359
@chelseapickslay5359 4 жыл бұрын
Jessica Davis I’ve done both and I’ve gone back to styling with soaking wet hair. I think with my low porosity hair I need my hair to be soaking wet in order to absorb product. Unless it’s a foam, then I style like Courtney does when using just a foam-straight out of the plop on damp hair. As for the frizz, I was experiencing a lot of that too and realized my hair was waaaay over-conditioned and had actually gone into hygral fatigue. So I’ve been using more protein and that’s helped a lot with the frizz! (After I did some strong protein treatments!)

I can now see the light at the end of the tunnel and am 100% committed once again thanks to you. I’m 40 yrs old and have been frying my curls for 20 odd yrs not having a clue how to handle them/the frizz (I so wish the curly girl method was a thing way back then lol), I had serious doubts that I would ever be able to revive them. A few minutes into the flinging my hair around, I suddenly felt the room spinning & felt like I was going to throw up. I ended up lying on the floor with the worst vertigo I have ever had for 24 hours. Even with my eyes closed, it felt like I was spinning. I love most everything you post - but, for this one, you should really post a disclaimer or medical warning :-/

Hey, Courtney, I am a big Fan from Bangladesh. I have started CGM about 2 months back and the first video I watched was one of yours. From that time I try to follow u religiously. I think my hair is still in transitioning phase, and all the products are not available here in our country. Still I try to manage as much as possible.Recently I am facing a problem, My curl clumping tends to get better only in days I wash my hair with some loo-poo or clarifying shampoo. But the days I co wash somehow my upper layer of my hair turns into a frizzy mess as the day passes by. It becomes more dry as well. But the lower layer of my hair shows amazing possibilities with small cute spiral curls and ring curls. What am I doing wrong here? P.S- another great problem I have is I can not refresh. My hair is a freaking disaster once I try to refresh :( **I have medium to high porosity hair, and have history of heat damaging my hair.

I began doing curly girl to SAVE time doing my hair in my busy mornings. My hair HOLDS the moisture in so it takes hours to dry. I like watching your videos, but they appear to make me feel like it is for those who love taking a lot of time with their hair. You are dressed while doing your hair. I find that it’s easier to wash & condish in the shower, wet plop and get dressed and do make up and THEN take care of my hair after all of that and spraying my hair with water before applying products then micro plopping etc.
