to people who say that curling is not a sport... you havent curled before. You need a combination of balance, strength, and muscle control. Although you can't really get into shape by curling, it does really help if you are fit
@Keeper1st14 жыл бұрын
As mentioned before, an example of the traditional scoreboard is given in the Wiki article. It's basically the inverse of the "baseball-style" board you see in the Olympics. The permanent numbers represent score, and the numbers placed above and below are the end numbers in which that team reached that amount of points. If you get 2 points in end 1, a 1 is placed above/below the 2. Get 3 more points in end 4, and a 4 is placed above/below the 5.

When I was 15 or 16 I had five in the house with a low guard up front. On the other skip's last rock, he curled too much and tapped our guard into the house to sit six, and I drew for seven. Our eighth rock was in play, but just behind the house.

Curling is the only sport I will watch on TV. I'm catching up on Grand Slam rounds right now. I'm in Pennsylvania right off Lake Erie and wish we had curling available here. The only 2 PA clubs are in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia-area, about as far as you can get from Canada in PA.
@penguinajb16 жыл бұрын
The ice is bumpy and by sweeping it, it warms the ice, decreasing friction making the rock go farther and straighter

@FischerFan17 жыл бұрын
Curling's equivalent to a 180 in darts; for all her success this past year, Kelly Scott will likely never enjoy this thrill again, even though she is world champion. The odds of this happening even once for a skip are so remote, you'd have a better chance of winning a five-figure prize in a lottery. What a dubious distinction for Cathy King to have. Both ladies are great curlers.

Sweeping does two things under normal conditions. It makes the rock run further and holds it straighter. At the top level curling is a precision game played to within inches. Sweeping can prevent a stone moving 1-2 inches or gain 4 feet

It's a very ancient sport. In a painting by Bruegel the Elder "Hunters in the Snow" (16th century), you can see curlers in the background.

I totally agree with you: the fact that i don't like it dooesn't mean that someone else likes it. But, for me the winter olympic games are something really precise, and i talk about curling as well as i talk about basketball and soccer in the olympics. The next stage will be pool or polo or what else?

'putting up guards ALSO helps your opponents to score, because if they get around your guard, its harder for you to take it out, which is why throwing up guards is an aggressive strategy.' Like you say, you have to get around the gaurds to score. That or get rid of them. It's not necessarily harder for your opponent to get around because you got around them. Plus then your opponent can raise a gaurd. Either way, the guards prevent a straight shot to the button.

It was invented in Scotland centuries ago and it has been televised nationally in Canada for 50 years. It's older than shuffleboard. Shuffleboard is curling on a waxed board.

Indeed. I've only learned about curling a couple months ago. It's quite fascinating. Like baseball, it can be a real nail-biter to watch. The basic concept is quite simple, really. I love the earlier comment of someone saying he doesn't understand the sport, adding "EPIC FAIL". I guess he's admitting "epic fail" of his brain... The only thing about curling that took me a while to understand was the traditional style scoreboard!

@wowhead1 What do you call putting up guards? Also, are you saying that throwing 40 pound stones and sweeping as hard as you can is easy? Curling has significantly more physical exertion than any board or card game. Another thing, listen to the song "Take me out to the ball GAME" sometime.

by sweeping the ice, they remove debris on the ice and therefore reduce the friction on the rock, making it travel farther. Also, by sweeping on one side of the rock, they can force the rock to turn a certain direction by increasing the friction on only one side.

the sweeping fast heats up the ice so the rock can slide on the water farther

Playing at this level, the sweepers will have over half their body weight on the brush head and will be moving it back and forth around 10 times a second. During the course of a game they may do this for over a mile. Try it for yourself and see whether or not it counts as physical exertion.
@mikeallen97776 жыл бұрын

boy, my tiny brain knows that if it looks boring and sounds boring, it probably is. I find baseball boring as well unless there's a rally going on. Or when I'm at the World Series in Anaheim California. The sport I watch is Mixed Martial Arts. It's in Man's nature to be physical. And the best way to show who's the best at it is through full contact fighting. The most exciting part about baseball and hockey is when fights break out. In MMA strategy is key.

@vassalagem1 Of course you're not supposed to try to score. You can't because the opponents stones are preventing that. Yes, in sports like baseball and football, you are either on offense or defense. In baseball, unless there are strange rules I don't know about, it's impossible for the defence to score. And yes, for the most part, you are always trying to score on offence in those part. But if you are 4th and long, you punt. You have to knock out the stones to be able to score.

Not sure why red kept try to gently get one in the house knowing they didn't have the hammer. I would have sent one hard at the large group. At worst knock a few points out, at best, sneak a red in with the yellows that couldn't be easily knocked out robbing them of most of the points.

I hate character limit, but understand. Man, I never thought I'd get such a debate from all this. But anyway, it's not just putting up guards, but utilizing them. If you put up gaurds and I use them..... This whole thing started over 'physical defence', like in football. Offence gets around defence there too. But it's still physical defence right?

Or slide out of the hack with a 40 pound rock, praying that you would get the right shot while trying not to fall? I am the Lead of our school's curling team, and every time after a game I am mentally and physically exhausted and one of my friends hurt her ankle because she slid out of the hack wrong.Jesus christ.
