The coin toss determines which team gets last rock in the first end and not which team goes first. Last rock or "hammer" can be a major factor in the scoring outcome of the end. Admittedly, the winner of the coin toss might elect to shoot first, but it's unlikely. Also, rocks or 'stones' are delivered alternately and each player delivers two stones in the case of a four-man team (for a three-man team, the lead and second each throw three stones and the skip throws two.)

It requires skills, strategy, team work and fitness. More than we can say about 3/4 of the "sports" at the Olympics. If you've played before, you already know that. If you haven't, try it before you judge it. Way harder than people think at all levels.

If they want to make curling interesting enough to keep people watching for the half day that a game lasts, they have to pick it up a bit. I have suggested several rule changes that would keep people on the edge of their seats. One rule change: allow body checking. Second: Goalies. Third: much narrower seats.
