Whether you believe the curly cuts caused the split ends or not, for how expensive those curly cuts are they should be addressing her split ends. Let’s just assume the curly cut is not causing her split ends. In that case, the idea that she is paying hundreds of dollars every 2-3 months for a cut that’s not even addressing her split ends is plain ridiculous and inexcusable.

I wonder if its not the fact that its the cause, but perhaps the curly cut isn't catching all the splits and therefore it gets worse over time maybe.....?

I was devoted to the cut it kinky/curly cut approach for over a year. I faithfully went to one of their trained stylists at least once a month for wash and gos and curly cuts about every 3 months. After about 6 months I noticed my hair was feeling extremely dry and looking chewed up. The stylist said my hair was still dehydrated from my past practice of keeping my hair in braids but to stick it out and things would get better as my hair became more moisturized. I finally said enough is enough and went to another professional for an evaluation and she informed me that my hair was very dry, brittle and uneven due to the gels, lack of moisture and conditioner, harsh manipulation trying to create a type of definition that my hair just didn’t have and the curly cuts. It has taken over a year of deep moisture treatments, corrective cuts and low manipulation hair styles from my new stylist for my hair to finally feel halfway decent. Everything Narada has said in this video has been spot on to my experience 😢 I should have known better

I've been caring for my hair and my daughters' hair for 20+ years. Ive always stretched annd blown out the hair first. Cutting while curly is disastrous because each clump of curls clumps differently. There is no way to assess damage or health of the ends when they are in its curly state. You either cut too much or neglect large portions of hair. Thank you for being bold enough to tell the truth regardless of the fallout from other stylists.

For the life of me, I don’t understand how someone that wears wash and go’s or twist outs the majority of time, never uses heat and is relaxer-free, would have so many splits. It HAS to be the curly cuts.
@iateyursandwiches
@iateyursandwiches Жыл бұрын
TBF, everyone regardless of how much heat they use will accumulate mechanical damage to their hair over time. It's inevitable. Still, trims every 3 months and your ends still look like that? Yikes! I'm glad I had a textured hair stylist in NY steer me in the right direction. She informed me that I need to be careful with curly cuts since they aren't for precision but more for shape and thus can miss a lot of split ends. It just made sense to me at the time considering how they go about these cuts.its very easy for natural hair to hide damage, especially if you slather a bunch of product on it.

I find that wash n goes, as much as I love them can be a potentially damaging style if you’re not careful… and I wear wash n goes 90% of the time!😅❤It’s alot of manipulation to set, and is generally more drying with the use of gels. Some people rake and shingle or use brushes to style and it’s alot of stress on the hair strand. When I first learned wash n goes, it was frankly tearing up my hair. But I realized I really had to be on my deep conditioning, using moisturizing leave ins, gentle styling, proper trims, and low manipulation.
@Criticalnin
@Criticalnin Жыл бұрын
@@alyariel9713nestly, I think it also has to do with people just not being consistent with the upkeep for their hair. Since the style is relatively easy people feel like they are to just go however long without washing the hair again or not protecting their hair at night. Ik washdays can be dreadful but let me tell you… no wash day has EVER made me want to end it all was one after a wash and go that I let stretch for like 3 weeks or so. (But when I did it every week/ a few days (whenever my hair started feeling dry) my curls were popping, bouncing and shrinkage) And also, people are only looking at the definition but not that the hair is moisturized. If you only use gel and nothing else your hair will be crying for moisture….!!! I didn’t know that people out here were only using gels… and sometimes another gel for hold… I thought that’s what the gels itself was for?? And also, it should come as no surprise that with tightly coiled hair like type 4.. if you do not prevent it from running against itself when you sleep, expect tangles tangles tangles! Which then leads the tangles and knots to rub against each other and create more splits…
@alyariel9713
@alyariel9713 Жыл бұрын
@@CriticalninI agree! I wrap my hair every night and only do my hair once a week. Doing it more often was just too much manipulation for my fine strands😭😭 I had so much tangling and breakage. Low manipulation is everything and yesssss: gel dries out your hair. Layering a moisturizing cream underneath gel is VITAL. Wetline extreme gel is my holy grail, but even botanical based gels like Camille rose curlmaker or Uncle funky’s daughter can leave hair dry. Moisture and proper maintenance (trimming ) is key for maintaining healthy hair in wash n go state. Thank you for your two cents!!❤

I've been getting curly cuts since Nov 2021 consistently (every 12 weeks). I did wash n gos 98% of the time and was always having trouble styling, smoothing and raking with the gels. Even a week or two after my curly cuts I was still having trouble with my ends. I used the curly magic and I create hold combo primarily throughout that time as well and would shampoo weekly. Even after detangling my hair it always felt like it was tangled again when I would go to style. Now that I'm hearing about all of this which I'm grateful people have been speaking up bc I thought I was just doing something wrong and it was becoming sooo frustrating. Curly cuts are not cheap and I stayed with it because I thought it would get better but I'm starting to think I'm having the same issues as those who've spoken up. To think that I've basically not been properly cutting my hair for almost two years is very disheartening! Also, the fear mongering against using oils and butters has made hair care feel so limiting and stressful. I've started to step away from their methods and moisturizing my hair again and it feels so good (soft and has movement) but I can tell I NEED a cut. I've made an appointment in my area to get a blown out trim. I'm nervous to see the results but I definitely think it's a large part of what's holding me back from retaining length. Thank you for speaking up about this!

It gets better. I got curly cuts for two years and experienced the same issues. My KIK stylist did my first blowout cut after my years of curly cuts. We both saw the same thing and she offered reasons why it was such a drastic difference. The only reason I didn’t continue my blowout cuts with her is because she really didn’t cut it well. I had to go back the same day because it was so uneven. I realized then that some stylists have specialties and are inaccessible. I never had her number so it took me using email her website and IG before I was able to contact her to fix the blowout cut.

I'm not a professional just a curly girl who has had curly cuts for years...Its hard to believe the cut itself caused this damage. It seems like the professional she went to sucked and didn't give proper advice. My hair stylist told me about my hair porosity, suggested new styling methods, and kept my ends looking good. Thanks to those changes I'm no longer product dependent and my curls stay nicely defined even after swimming! My curls no longer clump and tangle they are all individuals and my hair fall into its heart shape with ease. This poor lady got scammed.

Everything is not for every hair type. This curly cut business is one of them. Having different lengths of hair on type 4 hair seems like a breeding ground for fairy knots. If I ever tried those methods, I would have been bald. I see a lot of those KZbinrs that use that method had little to no length retention.
@Macmaniaaa
@Macmaniaaa Жыл бұрын
I mean that’s not the most fair assessment. The KZbinrs that use the method mainly wear their hair in wash N gos which causes a tremendous amount of shrinkage, so they could have the length and we wouldn’t know. Not to mention if they’re constantly cutting their hair every couple of months then they’re actively getting rid of the potential length. I agree with everything else!

@@GivebackthescarfI agree, my type 4 hair loves wash n gos. Most people dislike wash and gos because it shows off their true curl pattern, the various goops BW shove on their head weighs down the curl and gives the appearance of a looser curl pattern. Fortunately, maybe since I haven't been getting curly cuts for too long, my damage was minimal. Not a lot of splits but definitely uneven. It's not hard to adjust and compensate for varying curl behaviors. The stylist just needs to be familiar with your hair and how to either shorten or lengthen certain areas of the cut to make the shape more flattering in a blowout. To make it foolproof, you can also just follow up and fine tune the cut as needed after it's styled. There's no need to be so restrictive and rigid when it comes to customizing a cut for a client's service.

First off I'm white, but I SWEAR this is part of why my hair is so messed up. Not even just from curly cuts. But from stylists who really don't understand the fundamentals of hair. So many people always tried to "thin" it or give it "texture", even though I have extremely thick hair. I legit have told them please don't do that or use a razor and the damn stylist started running her scissors down my hair to texturize it!! I told her to stop and she tried to argue with me saying it's not the same as a razor and wouldn't mess up my hair 😭 My hair is like friggin Hagrid from Harry Potter. It has made my hair exactly like this where it looks healthy but there's splits all the way down and it won't smoothe out!!! It drives me insane and nobody understands how to fix it so I have been avoiding the salon like a plague! Are there salons like yours that also do type 2-3 hair??? I need to have my scalp taken care of too but legit I have NEVER seen a "white" salon that does any of the things you do. It's like they don't have any clue how to actually have healthy hair. I've been natural for 5+ years and still suffering from the damage these basic stylists did to me. Also totally agree with you about glycerin, my hair hates it and it makes my hair much more frizzy bc it draws in moisture from the air to make hair look more moist but obviously that can cause frizziness too depending on how humid your environment is.

My hair looked just like that but way worse. I was getting clumps of hair falling off. I just did a big chop last month and I’ll never go a curly cut again. Also, I think washing every week with a shampoo when I was using just water based products, and no deep conditioning, was excessive.

From my professional perspective as a hair stylist of 25 years, naturally curly hair does not need a hair trim or cut more than 3 times a year unless the client wants a shorter cut. Once that trim/cut is done then the hair needs to be moistured on a continuous basis, hair kept in protective hairstyles, not too much friction or manipulation on the hair or the ends, definitely a no to tight hairstyles , and the only heat that needs to be on the hair is the occasional silk press , or the blow out for the ends to be trimmed. Keep a leave in conditioner in the hair and a silk or satin bonnet at night. You're welcome

So I've been natural for about 17 years now, and that no oils no Butters sounds wild to me! Our hair is literally partially composed of oil! And I was always taught that butters and grease exist to create a barrier between your hair and all the pollution in the air, not to mention helping to hold in the moisture you have in your hair. It seems like a choice for styling your hair, but not long-term hair care. I think the natural hair community needs to start making distinctions between using products or techniques to create a style, and using products and techniques to care for your hair long term. They are not always the same. For me it's always regimen number one, treatments number two, and styles are third on my list of priorities for my hair

@@melancholygirl7793 I mean yeah I think everyone has different hair types. And you should definitely consult a professional regarding your hair. I think what is often the case is that people are not using appropriate and complementary hair products and techniques when they're using these things. So if you're going to use Butters or Greece, you're going to have to clarify on a regular basis in order to pull that stuff off of your hair shaft. And I think a lot of people weren't doing that, I think a lot of people were thinking they were going to survive off condition washes or moisturizing shampoos alone.

Uncle Funky’s Daughter is a very light, serum type aloe based gel, but I don’t use it alone anymore because it has very little slip and emolliency when used on bare hair. To me it’s just a higher end, more botanical version of curl activator gel and that’s how I use it. It is hydrating in the same way that old school jherri curl activators are hydrating but does very little to style the hair by itself, and it isn’t better at being a primer than a typical leave in. Leave-ins exist for a reason and are used by stylists of all races and clients of all demographics. I really don’t understand why they have a problem with them or act like black people are idiots for buying them. Anyway, thanks for this video Narada. Beautiful haircut as always.

I had never had that issue before until o started wearing my hair in wash n goes around the clock. I was still using leave ins but was not deep conditioning. I am concerned about this double gel method. That’s not how you’re supposed to do it. With the training I received, for two years ,we always talk about moisturizing the hair and then locking the moisture in with a gel. And of course, this varies based off of the porosity of the hair.

I got my first curly cut in April before I started seeing your videos on the issues with curly cuts. I decided to stop blow drying my hair early on because my hair felt too dry after doing it. I wasn't used to my hair feeling that way and I felt that this in the long run would cause damage to my hair over time, just with the constant heat application. Before this cut, I rarely put heat on my hair so I wasn't used to using it every week. I tried spraying my hair with a heat protectant prior to blow drying it (after the gel was applied) but I did not do this method long enough to assess if it actually helped with preventing heat damage. With the combing process, I don't subscribe to raking a comb multiple times through the hair to "set" the curls. My rule is to only comb my hair once and that's to detangle. I would mainly use my fingers to separate curls by running the sections under water but never fully shingled (so I wasn't looking for my hair to be "super defined"). I am going back next month to get my hair blown out and trimmed. I will say the overall cut motivated me to do more wash n gos and helped me figure out the look that I was going for with this style. However, I miss having longer hair and with my lifestyle, this just isn't manageable for me outside of summer. In the past, I mainly wore my hair in twist and would prefer to continue doing so. My stylist did tell me wash n gos would take less time with this curly cut but in all honesty, it takes about the same amount of time as it did when I styled my hair in twist. It's just not practical for me. Thank you for your videos, they addressed the concerns I had with this style.

I honestly felt like the wash and go was already pretty simplified - wash, deep condition in the shower, leave in and gel. Sometimes the no oils way, you end up using 2 or 3 gels or a gel and a mousse so you’re using just as much or more product anyways. I was tempted to try it out to see if my hair can get more defined but honestly between the curly cut fiasco and dryness I’m just going to stick with the usual KZbinr way I learnt years ago. And with the curly cut issue, when I was transitioning my dyed hair out, I scrunched my ends because my curl pattern was almost dead before I did a curly cut on myself. Immediately after my hair was so tangly and difficult, I had to do another curly cut without scrunching my hair quickly after and it improved. The scrunching made my dyed hair have a more inconsistent curly pattern so the ends were more jagged. Jagged ends do something awful to the hair. When you started speaking about the curly cuts it made sense to me because that explained why one cut had such a drastic change. I stick to cutting my hair on blown out hair now and my ends have been doing good.

It never made sense to me either. I saw them style a clients hair with 3 gels and a mousse. It was clear that the gel made the hair like Velcro, so instead of using a leave in, mousse was used to supposedly help detangle the hair🤦‍♀️

I'm not sure but I think several things could be the cause of damage with this hair regimen. For example, hooded dryer removes more moisture than air drying (that's actually the purpose). This could cause some dryness. I've also seen people following this regimen washing their hair weekly, while others wash their hair more frequently. Maybe some people need to wash their hair (or just get it wet?) more than once a week, to maintain a good level of moisture and minimize tangles. Speaking of tangles, another thing could be the use of brushes on hair that is not heavily lubricated with thick conditioners, oils, butters, grease, silicones, etc... if there are too many tangles and not enough slip, breakage can happen. I'm also wondering if the fact that the ends are uneven when stretched is not causing tangles whenn brushing. I am not a professional and I did not exactly follow this routine, so these are just ideas I have based on my experience with my hair.

I’m doubtful it’s the dryer. Hood dryers are very gentle. Especially on a waterlogged style like wash n go. Those Felicia leatherwood brushes m, however, are snag happy and don’t get through the hair easily-nearly every video about it gives struggle bus. But they do use conditioner while detangling. They don’t use conditioner for styling, they only use gels. Their products have oils and butters. They don’t use *additional* oils and butter with their stylers. Their process could be successful with a decent cut, I believe. That is…if you like two gels on your hair…I personally don’t. The definition and hold are nice, but it’s the same as using the ‘plastic gels’ they talk down on at the end of the day. Ingredients might be better but the hair feels the same. The ‘moisture’ doesn’t last any longer-but that’s really just the overall nature of wash n gos and how your hair responds to them. Your peak is your peak once you figure it out. So you’ll only do it if you like how it looks and feels.

This cut was so relaxing to watch! I followed the bgc method for about a year bc I love the way the wash and gos come out. I honestly had no issues with my hair becoming unhealthy but I’m very anal when it comes to my hair and I notice anything before it gets bad. I got bored with wash and gos after awhile and just like your client said that hair drying process with uncle funky’s is just too long lol I also think it contributed it to me having scalp issues but that’s another theory for another day. Also, with shaping curly hair you definitely end up having to keep your hair hair at a certain length to maintain the shape as you’ve stated when explaining it to us. I decided to grow out my hair longer so curly cuts are just no longer in plans. When I did blow dry and straighten my hair my ends were fine just maybe uneven bc of the shrinkage of curls and the curly cut. But overall I just prefer my hair being cut trimmed on blow dried or straightened hair. It’s more precise and ensures you get EVERYTHING. I will say the bgc method definitely helped me learned how to do a good at home wash and go. Long story short some things work for some people and some don’t. I definitely believe everyone should get a good blow dry assessment every now and then bc curly hair just hides so much. Thank you for bringing awareness to this situation and I wish everyone the best in their healthy hair journey 😊

I think kinky/tightly coiled hair needs to be cut blown out and/or silk pressed if you want dense ends. I see very few women who are successful in growing really long hair like that (again, i mean 3c-4z and beyond...looser textures have different rules). I also think constant curly hair styling (daily products being applied, wetting hair multple times a week) is really hard on a lot of our hair types too.

Wow. This was eye opening. I haven’t gotten a curly cut because of the price but I was planning on it eventually. I’ve been doing the BGC recommended hair care for about a year. I’ve blown my hair out twice since then and every time my ends feel like trash. So many split ends hiding under defined curls! I thought I was doing something wrong but now I’m wondering if it’s the weekly hooded dryer. I had to trim so much off. I’m definitely giving the hooded dryer a break and going back to leave ins and regular deep conditioner. At this point, I’ve lost more length than I’ve grown. Thanks for the education!

I still follow along the kinky/curly journey but I do still blow my hair out and get my ends cut. I also sometimes use oil but not a lot since my scalp produces a good amount of oil naturally. If I followed strictly with the curly cuts my ends will definitely look like the lady hair in the video. I may include a leave in that was mentioned in the comments. I’ve been seeing the Curly community promoting two weeks wash and go’s which I wouldn’t recommend nor do. Curly cuts is $250 Tapered cut maintenance $180 Wash and Go’s $125 This movement has become way too expensive. Then they want you to buy all the products which isn’t cheap at all. I would recommend everyone to learn the foundations of their hair and do what is right for you.

YES! This is what I've been trying to understand. I get that hair should be blown out to see the splits. But for those with multiple curl patterns (ex.looser curls in front or back, tighter in the crown) who like to wear wash n gos, my understanding is that once the hair is cut in a blow out and then styled in a wash n go, the shape may be off.

I have multiple curl patterns & I fix my shape by stretching after it dries. If a piece/section is hanging too long I rewet it to get it to shrink. The parts that shrink more, I stretch to match the area. I find you can normally make the shape you want thru stretching. Another option is to do what ALove4Me said she does in a comment on a different video - she says she gets hair trims on blown out hair then cuts for shape. She does not seem to have any problem growing her hair doing it that way.

Exactly all these curly cut stylists have to do is cut the hair blown out to address the damage then fine tune the cut in a curly state. If I know my client has more or less shrinkage in areas I'll usually just account for that during my cut blown out and it usually will correct itself

I think this goes to show that not all hair is the same and not all stylists are the same. I’ve been getting curly cuts consistently since 2016, and haven’t had issues . I’ll note, I do only plan for them every 9 months to a year though for a style reset. With 3C / 4A hair, I don’t think you need them more than that. I keep split ends at bay by getting a regular trim every 4 or so months in between cuts.

Well you can't properly assess the health of hair with curly cuts without blowing out the hair. The hair looks deceptively healthy in its natural state on the surface but you need to thoroughly examine the length and ends of each individual strand to be able to see the extent of health or damage.

It’s not damaged, they cut according to curl pattern. Because you have different curl patterns all over your hair. Your hair shrinks differently, so one curl may be tighter than the other. They cut for shape so if your curls shrink differently when it’s blown out it’s going to be all over the place. I blew my hair out after a curly cut, and it was insane. I ended up clipping my own ends. Their methods is not for length retention, it’s for shape only

For myself, I wear wash n gos maybe 90 percent of the time. I curly cut my own hair and it’s worked fine BUT It was not the sole technique i relied on. I curly cut very lightly : if a curl is too long and looks awkward, if a curl thins or is damaged , if a curl gets too in my face. (Back in the day I solely curly cut and it grew fine, but now I hybrid curly cuts and stretched hair cuts) It was fine to me because I never wore my hair stretched or straightened hardly. I wore my hair in the state i cut it in. But now, every few months i would do a maintenance trim on stretched hair to make sure I could see the ends. This has worked for me, and my hair has grown from basically bald to armpit length in a year❤❤

That’s why I never did curly cuts because they don’t address split ends. I’ve always gotten cuts or trims every 2-4 months or so which have been great but I just recently learned how to do a detailed trim/cum which has been really positive and given me more control plus I had no idea how much split ends can go up your shaft that aren’t part of a normal trim or cut. It’s really been helpful for my hair so far, it’s like the comb just glides thru my hair at this point 😂 and I’m natural 😊. Definitely staying away from curly cuts as a maintenance, there more of a style cut it seems. And style cuts are a lot of work 😢

I will say this too, a lot of clients are just putting curl enhancing gels or mousse products on top of products. Meaning instead of simply misting the hair with water to reactivate the product that is already in the hair, they just add layer on top of layer and so on plus adding a diffuser. Not to mention how often they are shampooing. That may be a part of the dryness factor as well.

Curly cuts are for people who wear their hair curly as their primary hair style. In the 3 years I’ve had mine I’ve only straighten my hair twice. My hair is healthy and looks proportional. Prior to this I was getting my hair cut when it was blown out only to have the weirdest hair shape when it was curly. You have to know what your goal is for your hair before you decide on how to cut it. If you KNOW FOR A FACT that you are more inclined to straighten your hair do not get a curly cut because the layering will not be to your liking.

I went last week and got a blow dried assessment. My hair was fine. The shape was off but the ends were not split, my hair was not dry, and my scalp is fine. I have had deva cuts, Original Moxie’s cuts because she’s right here in my town, another self trained curly cutter, plus wet cuts, and trimmed it myself more times than I was comfortable with. Thank God I had no damage, because this was the first time I had a blow dried assessment/cut in over 10-years. I have been oil and butter free for 2-years, but I have used a Briogeo deep conditioner every now and then. My stylist did recommend that I add Kinky Kurly Knot Today to my regimen. Another plud, I have almost zero shedding. It’s crazy that I only lose like 10 strands of hair on weekly was days. Wash n go is my only style. I diffuse 100% of the time. Never ever sat under a dryer. I’ve been lucky with the wash n go.

Speaking from experience (I have the same if not really similar hair texture) if you have this kind of kinky/ coily hair it hides damage really well. You absolutely have to be touching it and looking at it to know. Also when your hair is this dense you tend to produce a lot of oil on the scalp which does not move down the length of your hair if your not brushing through it. This personally attributed to the weakness of the ends and shafts of my hair. I understand that that doesn’t work for everyone (I use heat to stretch my hair) so leave in is essential to me. I think curly cuts are good for shape but definitely not maintenance. I’ve seen a lot of other women with softer silkier textures say getting curly cuts as maintenance damaged their hair too. So there is also the idea that it’s not solely about hair texture or type.

Before the whole curly cut phenomenon I always liked to get my hair blown out and cut then pressed, and whenever I did a wash and go it was always great. I tried two different curly cut stylist and just hated the whole method. The first stylist the cut wasn't bad and grew out nicely but the amount of product they use doesn't make sense it took HOURS for my hair to dry and it was two inches long. The second stylist cut was horribly uneven and again with the overuse of products. I don't like having handfuls of products in my hair or having it finger styled because realistically I'm not going to finger coil my hair at home. Also I've recently made the decision that I will be doing my hair on a biweekly basis and my doing I mean a silk press bc I'm tired of the curly hair maintenance. It looks good for one day and that's it and it's so dried out from curly gels. If I get heat damage, oh well!
