Just some extra info on silicones 😉: The silicones that have PEG in front of it are water soluble and won’t cause build-up on the hair. Dimethicone copolyol is also a water-soluble ingredient. If a water soluble silicone is in for example a deep-co, the product will still be able to penetrate the hair because the product is applied on wet hair and rinsed out with water. A non sulfate cleanser can wash these silicones out easily.

Lois that's true... I know there's a big push to use products that don't have sulfates, silicone, parabens but in all honestly we've used products that had these ingredients in them and nothing serious happened to our hair. Lord, knows my mom used products back in the day when I was growing up, and my type 4 hair had no issues with them and grew like a weeds. I do make it a mission to look at ingredients no disrespect to Bianca, but the natural hair community isn't in my bathroom when I'm doing my hair... soooo, I use what works for me.

love that youre giving these away. silicones in shampoo create more slip, because most silicones are water soluble it just washes out when you rinse it (I use the ogx coconut curls shampoo sometimes). Also I'm pretty sure cyclopentasiloxane is a silicone that evaporates, so it causes 0 build up. One of my holy grail products Aphogee Curl Definer has Trimethylsiloxyamodimethicone. A lil bit of it goes a long way. before i started the CG method for decades i used sulfate once a week and conditioners and stylers with silicones I my hair for decades grew like a weed like more then the average of 1/2 inch a month My hair was shiny and looked amazing and healthy. It wasn't until i went CG that my hair is a disaster and it's been a year and a half and i do moisture masks once a week sometimes twice i do protien masks so I think and am going back to silicones because i never saw damage i always had much growth i then went through a few years of keratin and amino acid treatments and i got my curls back with the cg method but frizz and ygness has been a struggle. so silicones are fine for really hard to manage currls as long as you use a sulfate to wash them out and using a sulfate a coi uple times of month followed by a siicone free mask is fine i have decades of photos to prove it.

Hi Bianca. As always, an informative video that's fun and easy to watch. I watched the video you linked with Penny Tovar and noticed Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate on your list of sulfates. Despite its name it's actually NOT a sulfate but a surfactant that's derived from coconut and palm oil so if you ever see it listed on your ingredient list just know that it's a naturally derived foaming agent. I use it in my natural bath products all the time. 🤓💕🙋🏽♀️
@gbarillasOfPa4 жыл бұрын
@Anna Bowen They are but surfactants aren't always sulfates. Surfactant just means that it foams and cleanses. Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate is a naturally derived surfactant that's not a sulfate. It cost significantly more which is why so many people go with the cheap synthetic surfactants like sulfates which also happen to foam more.

Hey Bianca, I have 3b-3c hair, my hair coarse, dry (my scalp too), damaged, short with probably a lot of split ends (I've never cut my hair yet), & I might have a lot if frizz which I don't know how to recognize it. As a kid my natural hair was always greased (I still use hair grease) & always braided , when I turned 11-12 my aunt convinced me to relax my hair, I think I relaxed my hair 2 to 3 times 4 max. The last time I used a relaxer was before my 13th birthday, since then my hair started been damaged, since back then I didn't know how to take good care of myself & my hair (& I'm still learning) I wanted to have beautiful hair like celebs but couldn't. Know I've came to realize that a relaxer is actually a permanent hair straightening treatment. In my circle & african beauty culture I grew up believing that a relaxer was just to soften the hair overtime & not make it straight. I've been going curly 4 years now, I don't know if my hair has finished transitioning. Normally when I shampoo & condition all together my hair would be curly & very soft (it also depends on the conditionner). I've switch to sulfate free brands like shea moisture not a big change, they have there raw shea & manuka honey shampoos which I hate cause they make my hair super dry & tangled, I love there coconut hibiscus curl smoothie (it makes my hair super soft, but stopped using it for now cause if I already grease my hair & add more creams to it I have a lot of product build up), I also like there raw shea conditioner, It makes my hair super easy to detangle & moisturized unlike the shampoo but is a little too thick like the raw shea hair mask which was okay but not wow (the mask was too similar to the conditioner for me, I didn't see it's necessity at all & plus the condi was much better), the only products that checked all the boxes & which is less talked about within there line is there 100% coconut oil hair mask (I super love it, It makes my hair super soft & curly, easy to detangle & has a coconut smell, but I'm still hunting for a better mask). Know I'm looking forward to try garnier wholeblends( which I've already tried), fructis & l'oreal ever line which sulfate free) shea moisture is too expensive in my country & since I'm in HS & don't have a lot of money I'm waiting until college to try high end brands . I used to use Kuza hair grease with a lice treatment but stopped it cause it made my hair lice worst, I've started using magic blue hair grease days ago, I'm aware that too much grease is bad for the scalp so I try to use less now, same with shampoo & cond. I've also tried styling my curly hair with creams & camille rose curling gel, but it wasn't good, I guess it's because I've used a lot of product, wasn't patient enough. Right know all I want is my hair to grow back by braiding & greasing it's the only method I know & can trust WHITHOUT TOUTUBERS TELLING ME TO PUT EGGS ON HAIR. I would love to try keratin treatments in the future I don't want my hair curly all time, & I would also love to try versatile relaxer that don't focus on totally straightening the hair but making the curls a little bit softer, I would love to try curly hair wash n go in the future if my hair accept it. What I want is to grease & braid my hair sometimes, do beautiful wash n gos with my curly hair, do Keratin treatments & blow outs or hair straightening, etc.. without my hair been damaged. I would also love to know how to grow my baby hairs longer, & make them softer they seem a little more coarse than the rest of my hair & are the reason why I can't do some styles. BIANCA ANY ADVICE PLEASE.

Nothing wrong with silicone, but for different reasons than your skin. With hair, silicone isn't inherently bad. It just builds up, and needs sulfates to remove. Since CGs don't use sulfates, the build up can get bad and weigh down the hair, plus not allow products to enter the hair. For people who use sulfates regularly, all silicones are 100% okay, and in fact probably protects their hair.

Im just confused because others use some of the products that you mentioned and absolutley nothing is wrong with their hair. I also know that the "CG" friendly product that's most popular is Deva Curl. I've tried Deva for years and honestly it sucks. So I've switched to other brands and they maybe have silicones in them and my hair looks better in most cases. I believe it depends on the person's hair. Pretty sure when I was younger my mom was using products with all these ingredients you were mentioning and my hair was still healthy and long🤔

All products contain silicones, or sulfatos, or parabéns..the only ones that don't, put it on the front of the label stating that its free of it.

Actually no... I have many products that are free of those ingredients but it’s not advertised on the front, always check the ingredients ☺️👍🏽

@@BiancaReneeToday well I mine are Brazilian hair products and on the front of theirs, it says they're free from those things. And it says whether its for 2abc, 3abc or 4abc hair so you don't have to waste time trying out something that you don't know is gonna work for your kind of curls or not, you i just go for the ones that say 3abc and 4abc. That's one of my biggest gripes with usa hair products it will say its for curly hair bur won't work cause its mean for the 2abc and type 3 hair alot of times so i quit using..and they're expensive my hair is down to my butt. Ugghh at least with the Brazilian products they sell kilogram sizes for the long haired people, And keep some of those ingredients out the product, and will label 2abc 3abc or 4abc (or all) on the bottle

This was so very helpful. There are so many products with names we won’t recognize! I try, but still have spent so much on products that don’t work well on my hair. The worst is that when a shampoo or conditioner does not have things we don’t want, others in the same line do have them. Thanks again for all of your hard work.

Yasss girl, so many brands make curly hair products with silicones which doesn’t help moisturize our hair at all. It’s a shame cause I’ve seen so many people with great curl potential waste their money buying them. I also avoid drying alcohols and waxes. Great video Bianca!

I went to a curl specialist and she use mizani on my hair so I’m in complete shock that it is on this list but it makes sense. She used the entire line and I had legit a frizzy Afro with maybe 2 defined curls. That was the worst my hair was ever styled. I felt horrible. She took pictures but never posted and my hair looked horrible compared to all her other clients which made me feel bad about my hair because I thought it was just me. She also didn’t style maybe hair types like mine but I don’t use parabens, sulfate or silicone myself and my curls have been popping, juicy and no frizz. I am still working on learning how to diffuse but I am honestly impressed with how it’s been going and very grateful. Thank you Bianca!

I notice for some brands you only had one product which you stated had silicone. For example, Miss Jessie. I guess I’ll refer to your other video on how to read labels. Not sure if it’s that one product, or the entire Miss Jessie’s line. I must say, I’ve been on my journey for 11 months thus far and bought soooo many products, mainly expensive ones that claim to detangle, moisturize etc. the only product that works well for me are the Miss Jessie’s pillow soft curls, and pillow soft gel. When I apply pillow soft curls, I can actually detangle my hair without difficulty. No other product does this for my hair. Also, Miss Jessie’s leave in conditioner makes my hair really soft. I’ve also seen many curly hair girls with big beautiful curly hair that stated they don’t mind using silicones. I guess different products affect our hair differently. What may work for me, may not work for someone else. My aim isn’t to use silicones, however, if I found a product that works, I’m sticking with it for now until something better comes along. My hair sheds a lot and when I use Miss Jessie, my hair doesn’t shed as much. I do appreciate the videos you put out, I have referred to your videos in the past which have been very helpful and provided me the guidance I needed on this journey. I have learned a lot from your videos in terms of how to care for naturally curly hair. So thank you.

Hi BiancaRenee, I was surprised about Miss Jessies's products. I can't use any gels in my hair, no matter the company; crunchy, stiff, wore out my edges, and I think makes my hair fall out (Gorilla snot)anyway, after making my own flax seed gel I can nourish it with any oil I want, get definition, soft hold for 2-3days. Shampoos are my next venture-haven't found one I like, so far, they all dry my hair out. That'll be another DIY. GREAT video, Good looking out Dia

Curly girl method is not for everyone with curly hair. I had so much build up on my scalp due to no sulfates. Talk about frizzy hair and dry hair. Sulfates and silicones are not that bad for you and a lot better than the build up on your scalp that can lead to hair loss, itchy scalp, dandruff, frizz, and dryed out hair. I mean look at deva curls hair loss. I get some people have healthy hair but its definitely not good for everyone with curly hair. I saw your channel 2 years ago and switched to cgm and have regretted it since. My hair is now going back to being healthy with my sulfates. Btw i havent watched since 2 years ago so im not sure what her stance on cgm is anymore. I felt like i had to do cgm to have healthy hair and it's just not for me and i found other people on KZbin with the same problem as me.

I would challenge you to diversify your talking points, perhaps facilitate a panel will experts across the multiple developmental stages of the products (entrepreneur/founder, chemist, lab technician, supply chain, marketing, retailer/hair stylist) I think this hard fast rule of no silicons no parabens no sulfates is over simplified and extremely repetitive

Silicones and sulfates are not that bad. My hair is doing much better when I added them back in. I researched it and listened to dermatologist and trichologists on it and yeah they are not as bad as media per trays. You can’t believe everything you hear. Gotta look at the research. With that said this video was actually helpful for me to see which products have these ingredients. I love silicones bc it creates slip which prevents breakage and easy detangling. And sulfate shampoos are not that bad if you alternate them with non sulfate shampoo and if you moisturize. But again I am no expert but this is what they recommend. But we all are free to do what we want with our hair. We are all different after all

I know many years ago my sister told me about silicon and I didn't know anything about what was going on with silicone I wish that I've known more about hair products when I was younger but I am a natural girl and I make my own products just like Carol daughter if she can make them in her kitchen so can I I don't sell them put and I don't give them away because there's a lot of people that don't believe in being natural and being having healthy year so all I could say is to avoid it make your own batch of everything and if you need a extra conditional whatever if you have the money go out and buy it if you don't make it in your own home

I don’t like the CGM. It’s not realistic. It’s strict and honestly sometimes silicones helps but you need to really strip it. You can use sulfate/silicones once in a while then stick with sulfate free but sometimes the hair does cooperate with those ingredients and I feel like it’s me because my color protectant shampo is a sulfate shampoo but it extends my color

Hey, it depends on the range you use. They have a chart online that matches your curl pattern to the optimal range for your curl type. For example, the Manuka Honey set is fantastic for my 4C curl but might be heavy and greasy for curls looser than 3C. I like that SM is pretty affordable for us college students 👩🏽🎓
