As a resident of Moab, I think this a great reminder. The people who live here are trying to get children to sleep, get to work, get home, and still enjoy the relative peacefulness of our community. It's hard to do with so many vehicles (not just UTV's) racing up and down our streets. One thing I really would like to remind everyone of though, is to please remember that pedestrians have the right of way. I walk to and from work nearly every day, a 14 block walk, and it can be terrifying, with so many people running red lights to keep up with their group. Just stop it. Thanks.

Thank you for putting this together. In January I will have been living in Moab for 30 years and the changes have been hard to take. But the UTVs by far have become the breaking point for me, my husband, my son and dozens of people I know. This year has been the absolute worst with UTVS sporting flags (sometimes containing obscenities), light and sound packages, and other gimmicks absolutely flooding the town. Please emphasize staying on the trail in your next video. It's pretty heartbreaking to see old Jeep trails wide enough for one vehicle turn into four lane speed tracks or to see where a UTV has torn off into the desert simply because the equipment allows it. I wish all motorized recreation enthusiasts had your attitude and understanding. Sadly, they don't. (But keep trying!)

Totally agree..... Must also add, "it's not just Moab, its everywhere"! There are alot of small towns that have laxed their laws to allow the UTV'ers slack. Everyone wins as there are countless areas to explore. Your riding experience is always better with a bit of respect and common since... you give it and normally you will recieve it......

I agree with everything said in this video. After a week of crawling in our Jeep, we literally were run off the road twice by groups of razors, “on public roads”. In 2016 & 2017 we took our razor to Moab and were completely respectful of Jeeps, and in town because we appreciated being able to utilize roads with our UTV. After our last trip with the Jeep, we were wishing they would ban utv’s altogether, sadly because there’s a lot of fun to be had with utv’s and atv’s and dirt bikes. Each machine on the same trail is a totally different experience and fun in its own way, but not if there’s no respect for others on the trail. If this problem doesn’t stop, it will get worse and something really bad will eventually happen, and then legislation will stop it all. We’re so lucky to be able to enjoy Moab trails and other places too, let’s not give the “anti-off-roaders” ammunition to put an end to it.

We have been to Moab twice, 2014 & 2018 with our UTV’S. There was a very different feel in the town between the first trip and second. The second time the town seemed less tolerant of UTV’S. We trailer our machines to the trail everyday. Met Jeepers and cyclists on both trips. We try and ride cautiously the respect everyone like us enjoying the trail. On our second trip to “Hey Joe Canyon” we came across some cyclists in need of some assistance. We aided them on the way down and a second time on the return trip with a ride back to the staging area! They were very grateful and we were glad to help as it was a cold rainy day and a long way back for them! Great video guys! We all need to respect each other and the area as if we loose it it’s likely not to open up ever again.

Really appreciate your approach to this and hope EVERY ATV driver watches this. You said “This is the behavior of just a few” yet it feels like 75% of Side by sides we encounter are driving too fast, playing music too loud, passing off of the trail, and littering. As a Jeep driver I try very hard to be patient but I can’t tell you how many times I bring guests to Moab for their first off road trip and they leave with a negative opinion of the side by side community. A friend flew all the way out from VA to experience Moab for the first time and he watched in horror as we saw a vehicle coming down a Hell’s revenge climb, so we pulled over to let them descend. The line of ATVS behind us took that moment to not only pass us by drive off the trail, around the Jeep that was descending. The descending driver was made even more nervous as dozens of UTVs drove all over the hill around them. Why couldn’t they wait? What was the big hurry? That day on Hells Revenge I was passed by over 300 UTVs (yes, we counted) and very few of them were respectful. I know UTVs are faster, but if someone is “ahead of you” please wait patiently until they let you pass. If you can’t be patient, choose a different trail. We’re all here to have fun, but we shouldn’t impose ourselves on others. If you see a group enjoying an obstacle, picnic spot, or overlook, be respectful. Don’t blast your music, throw beer cans, and leave your motors running. When you encounter another group please think “let’s not disturb them”. That’s what I try to do and it’s served me well so far.

As a wheeler, we ALWAYS give room for smaller rigs including SXS’s. We also carry a bunch of extra water and some granola bars and stuff to share especially with the bicycle crowd. There are lots of these folks that really underestimate their water requirements and we take p,ensure in helping them, and anyone else, out. Wheel, have fun, AND BE HUMAN!

I appreciate this, as a born an raised Moabite it’s hard to see the disrespectful ones, but I will be the first to admit that some of our locals are just as bad. I ride horses and there’s nothing scarier than having a thousand pound animal jump out from under you because some guy comes squealing around the corner. Just please remember your going through peoples neighborhoods where children live, animals and wildlife.

As someone who recreates in a totally different way than you guys, this sort of commentary is really great to hear. I know there are a lot of good folks driving those UTVs, I wave at them on the trails. The few people you're talking about who are causing problems would perhaps change their behavior if they understood what you're saying. One thing I don't understand is why UTVs are so loud. It's incredible how sound carries in the desert landscape. I hear you all from miles away, and the noise around Moab seems like a constant these days, even in many remote areas. I really try hard to respect and appreciate all the different ways people enjoy the outdoors, but this gets harder to do when other's fun impacts one's own enjoyment. Mutual respect and understanding are a really good start.

UTV's were built for extremes. Unfortunately, many people who use them kind of loose their composure because they are marketed to be such. Renters of these vehicles can be the worst...I've seen it. Nice presentation and a good reminder to respect others and safety.

Love moab went twice this year...want to move there..drove from Cleveland 1600 miles each way..took the whole family..can't wait to get back respect is big in every facet of life..we rented a utv both times...great fun absolutely beautiful..we did chicken corner and potato salad hill... then hook and ladder...great time

Well said! For those of you old enough to remember Pismo Beach (Central Ca) in the 1960’s and 1970’s you know what happened when the ARC’s started hitting the dunes. By the late 1970’s and early 1980’s the Jeeps and buggy’s were getting blamed for cutting trails through the vegetation. The thing is those trails were based on their width were obviously caused by the ATC’s. The coastal commission had been looking for an excuse for years to start closing large areas of the dunes and they did. As a 4x4 and SXS enthusiast I really appreciate your video on this subject.

Major issue here in Colorado here as well. The amount of bad trail etiquette and disregard for staying the trail in the last handful of years is nothing like I have seen in my 30 years of being involved with OHV clubs. Its a matter of time before they Poke the wrong Bear and trails start getting closed. Its damn cIose people and changes are already starting to happen in SW Colorado. I come from both the Jeeping World and the UTV world as well as owning property along a trail system. What I see as an issue is that the Jeep clubs have always been organized and adopted trails, worked with the Forest Service hand in hand and done maintenance on trails as well as educating new comers into the hobby as far as what is right and what is wrong and proper trail etiquette. We don't see that on the UTV side of things. Organization and education to newcomers has to be done or we are all doomed by the greenies!

Respect, common sense and living the rules that there is a place for everything. Speed mixed with trail riding will always end with life changing results for the few statistics involved. It ALL stops once the police begin handing out costly tickets for improper use of either a UTV or a Jeep on the roads or on the trails. Stiff monetary FINES dig deep into pockets, and that WILL have a positive impact in short time as word gets out that FINES are being issued. This isn't rocket science. If you publicly support the police to enforce the laws and issue FINES, they will do so. Verbiage does little to change this type of a problem.

I've had my Jeep in Moab once and loved it. (Can't wait to get back) I love sxs's as well as Jeeps and in my opinion if we're all in Moab enjoying the same thing, get along. Its a big place that we can all enjoy. But be respectful to the locals too. All the people I met there were great people. Well said. As a UTV owner, this year was a year we almost sold ours because there were SO MANY disrespectful people in UTVs at Moab, and other places we visited. Very difficult times, and UTVs aren't a license to be rude, obnoxious, or disregard laws.

100% correct. Being a Jeeper, dirt biker, and recently joining the UTV world, they all share one common theme; there are a lot of people in each of those hobbies who don't respect other trail users or the surrounding community (blaring stereos, overly loud exhaust, ignoring local laws, litter, etc). My work has relocated me all over the U.S. and another common theme I have seen is that noise and disrespect has closed soooo many riding areas. The community full of tax payers always wins when it becomes a battle between off-roaders and them. Living in the D.C. area showed me that we should never take our riding areas for granted. More discussions like this need to be had and we need to educate others on respect amongst other trail users, and to respect the communities that surround our favorite riding areas. Another phenomenal approach is joining a off-roading club that supports local DNR, US. Forest Service, etc. Then have the club sponsor some trails and organize trail maintenance and clean up days. I've seen it work and build great relationships amongst the off road community and those who also use the area via motor-less means and communities. I'll step off the soap box now. I'm just happy to see you guys talking about this and sharing it. I hope that other follow suit.

As a dirt biker my worst fear is meeting a SxS with a low skilled over confident possibly drunk driver going way to fast owning the whole trail around a blind corner or hill. ATV's where bad enough but the monster SxS makes it far worse. 10% of any group is the problem but a little enforcement of rules/common sense goes a long ways otherwise it all quickly degrades to a S show

Thank you! As a Moab local I can tell you it’s all about noise. I moved here for the mountain biking, and dirt biking, and as a “gear head” I know that our rides of choice can be made quieter. A few weeks a group of ax’s drove down my street. Four were relatively quiet, and one was ridiculously loud. I could hear it all the way to the river. Education of the riding public is a big job, but guys and gals like you are influencers and can use your platform to get the word out. Until I watched this video I was on the side of banning utv’s on the street. You have given me hope that the ATV community can self police. I used to work with our local Moto group Ride With Respect, we’ve had ambassadors out talking to riders to spread the word about staying on the trails, etc. perhaps your community could do the same. Hand out brochures, produce tv spots to spread the word. Work hard now for the riders of the future. It won’t be easy, but you all have the passion for your sport to get it done! Good luck!

Like you said Respect is key. I’ve had Jeep’s, Rock bouncers, big rig on 54’s and now back to Jeep’s. Been wheeling over 20 years and the only disrespect for the land or other people has come from SXS owners. My kids here more cuss words on the trail coming out of SXS sound bars than they hear anywhere else. Sucks. Ran Behind the Rocks in Moab a couple months ago and it was a disgrace. I will not go into detail of what we encountered but I was embarrassed to even be an off-roader in general. Like others have said it’s everywhere and it’s not good. With that being said I love SXS’s but it’s more than a select few that are ruining it. Trail etiquette just isn’t there in general these days. And of course full size rigs,buggies etc have issues too. Respect is key for the land we ride on and the other people using it as well.

That's been my experience as well. Not to judge or point fingers but in my experience living in Utah Wheeling on some popular trails it seems it's always the guys running their SXS big LED whips, Bud light in there center console, bumping their garbage Rap music talking about f this f that. It just becomes ridiculous. And it really is just a matter of respect. If you want to listen to that type of crap by all means go ahead but when you're blasting it on your soundbar for everyone else to hear that shows a clear lack of respect for other people. Because not everybody wants to hear about how many girls you can have sex with etc. Or more likely they have children. It's just asinine. And that's not saying you can't get that type of behavior from full size rigs either but for some reason it seems those types of people are drawn to side by sides or something. Either way no matter which way you cut the pie it seems that this problem really has to do with disrespectful behavior. We really are all just neighbors and as such we need to understand that we are different but that doesn't change how we treat each other. Being respectful and courteous to people simply has to do with being selfless. That's something we need more of.

I never knew this at all. I make the trek from Denver to Moab a few times a year. Was just there last week for Jeep Jamboree. Everyone was courteous and respectful as always. I always rent a 4 seater XP 1000 and have a blast. I always try to be easy on it through the residential areas going to Hell’s Revenge. Maybe I’m just used to certain trail etiquette being from Colorado.

I appreciate this video. Many of us here in Moab enjoy mixed use recreation. Our family has a sport boat and dirt bikes that let us access areas of the region that we couldn't otherwise get to enjoy with our young kids. But I've also witnessed a LOT of dangerous driving and outright disrespect-so much that I don't allow my kids to ride their bikes or play in front of my house during the spring and summer. Would you accept that in your own neighborhoods? We're glad to welcome you, but drive like you live here, and act how you would want people to act around your family (and please stay on the trails!) The general frustration here is with the nuisance, not the use itself.

The Black Hills this year was hit really hard because of COVID and people wanting something to do so they came out in the spring and tore up a lot of trails! I am an avid UTV rider and love to ride and drive and have been to MOAB and love it there also. People, have respect for other people's location that you are visiting, no matter what! Common sense and respect go along way and it doesn't take much! Let's all work together on this so there isn't legislation put in place and restrict things so much it is no longer fun!

I just ran into this, went to little Sahara, then glamis, then Moab, and then we went to Colorado! We had no problems anywhere till silverton area, we are 100% street legal ( assembled vehicle) in Michigan. We could not make it to the trail head with our 40’ Motorhome and 28’ enclosed trailer, we got as close to the trail head as possible but couldn’t make the switchbacks. So I tried to drive the last 10-12 miles and had citizens waving us down telling us they were going to call the cops! They told us to rent jeeps, so I tried. Was going to use the Jeep to pull the trailer to the trail head so we could pull out our RZR’s. We drove 12 hours out of our way to ride this area and ended up loading up and going home! Was really bummed cuz the girls really wanted to see the old mines etc. it’s crazy to me, this state has weed fields like Michigan has corn fields but my assembled vehicle rzr with Badass led turn signals, glass windshield, power wiper, and washer, dot tires, etc can’t drive on the back roads legally!🤦‍♂️

I live just south of Las Vegas and about 1/3 a mile from my house is a big launch area for off-road activities. I cruise around in my Jeep or my dual sport, I go slow and keep to myself. Some of these rzr drivers are nuts, drivin like they are ken block or something. It’s all respect, respect for other riders/ drivers and respect for the trails.

We were in Moab last September and only saw ONE cop. The town needs to properly staff the police department, and then enforce the law. Pretty simple My Turbo S has a muffler on it, we follow the law, and WALK downtown. I’m 1000000% for Moab police to write a hundred tickets a day to people violating the laws. There are plenty of law abiding SXS owners who will continue to support the town and NOT raise hell while doing it.

I agree with what you are saying, I’m a rock buggy, jeep, mountain bike guy and love Moab, however I think the problem is way deeper than the town being annoyed buy utvs, the town WAS a mining town! All the trails were made by/for mining and that has been forgotten, legislation is doing there best to close the land and “preserve “ it the utvs are just an back door to a bigger plan.

As a mountain biker, I've stopped riding in Moab because I have almost been hit by jeepers, UTV's and everything in between. All it takes is for one person to get killed and the gov't will take it all away. Great video for doing your part.

Agreed! It doesn’t take much to be kind and respectful. I live in a lake community. 365 acres of lake and it’s surrounded by our little community. During the summer the Chicago people come here and get all sorts of rowdy and when we as permanent residents call them out, we get called every name in the book and we are told to f$&k off! The disrespect is real! Even the utvs and golf carts are getting stupid. Oh sure there are most that try to be respectful but they aren’t the problem, it’s the younger, partyers and general arseholes that are the problem. So let’s all be better at being humans and try to do the right thing!

07:00 great comment about letting others enjoy their fun, and not being a Karen, finger pointer. I've been to Moab twice, a week long stay each time. I will say that I have not had one single negative encounter while there. If you are going for the first time, it's better than you can imagine. The restaurants are all very good, people are happy, and the scenery just blows your mind.

We spent over $1,000 to install a significantly quieter exhaust, jumped through the hoops for street legal, all so we can go to Moab this fall. Hope it's still open when we are going...! BTW we're "those UTV riders" that pull over and shut down when we come across horses, bikers and hikers. I can understand why the locals are pissed and hope to be a "guest with manners".

I live in NJ where the only legal thing left is mountain biking. I Jeep, sxs, MTB, and hike. I drive across the country to do all these things in Moab not only because it’s beautiful there but because I can’t do it legally on the east coast. Have respect for each other no matter what form of recreation your doing. Before these world renowned areas become places you’re not even allowed to WALK in like some federal parks here.

Any idea if these are rental units or owner owned? Regardless, there’s definitely a lack of respect, respect of people and land. Thank you for making this video and it applies to all areas. I’ve been to Moab twice so far in my Chevy Colorado and am really looking forward to hitting up some trails with my new SXS. I will not be an asshat 👍

Totally agree. The biggest prob I see is most the turbo owner all ways have something to prove. I tell them you do realize you have the same unit as most people do correct. So what are you trying to prove? That our machines can do the exact same thing. That’s what I will never understand. I’m in the process of having a 1 off Honda Talon 1000 R. It’s a 2019. It’s coming together slowly but surely, but I think it will truly be worth it. I feel it will be the way Honda should have built the 1000R in the first place.

It's been like that for ever in Moab. In the 80s my jeep club came across some sun burned exhausted bike riders. We loaded them up and drove them 12 miles to their cars. No way they were gonna make it, 100deg

We're all in it together. Did have a couple of young people try to throw rocks at our Jeep. They was lucky and we didn't see them again. I feel we need to tag or license the UTVs. This isn't to jack with good people that ride them, but to be able to track down the a$$hats. We have them in all groups not just UTVs, but you can get my jeep plate and track me down if I did something wrong. My 2 cents.
