This week in the Press Play on Your Pay series, I will discuss knowing the difference of current salary versus desired salary. This topic makes up two of the most important questions asked frequently during a job interview and they often require some type of reply. I will provide my current salary best answer and it is something that I have shared with you in a previous video. Also, I will give out some career advice on how to answer salary expectations which is something employers really want to know before they even bring you on board. I was asked about my salary during an initial phone screening and I chose not to disclose. Of course, I did not get a chance to interview after that. I was okay with that because, during my research, I found out that the company likes to offer low pay but also provide employees with a company car. I didn't need a car. Lol. But I am glad that I didn't waste my time interviewing with a company that would not have been a good fit. I knew that just from that question and the recruiter's reasoning for asking. She told me that they wanted to be able to justify the salary that I was asking for. Which is ludicrous to me, I can say ANY salary, there is no verification for that.

I’ve never been asked what my current salary is, but its probably because I’m still in my early stages in the workforce. All my jobs have been volunteer/intern/entry level minimum wage jobs. For the first time, a company e-mailed me after I was approved after passing their assessment, a list of questions. One of the questions was are you willing to accept X amount if hired. So its like they get that conversation out the way fast.

Yes, you are right. Entry level positions are harder to negotiate salary, however, don't forget that there are other things that can be negotiated in your offer in addition or outside of salary. I get nervous when asked about my desired salary because I don’t want to price myself out of a job by coming across as a snob. They hold the cards and I don’t want to turn them off my giving them a high amount. Truth be told some jobs seekers are desperate because they have been without a job for so you don’t want to turn a potential employer away...at least that was my reasoning. 😩

There are many people who feel the exact same way as you, especially before they join my OMJS program. However, a great employer will tell you first if your desired salary is outside of their budget before letting a great candidate go. In addition, please make sure that you do your research on what the market pays for a salary before you give one to the employer. Once you do your research, you will generally have a good idea of what the range should be.
