Ports around the world are facing significant shipping delays. The port of Savannah is one port facing these major delays at their containership terminals. Here is a brief take on some of the reasons for these delays from the perspective of a U.S. Merchant Mariner aboard a Maersk Cargo Ship.

Hi Bryan. Thanks for the perspective. Very interesting to hear from the front lines. Retired MMP skipper here - Horizon Lines. Sailed Maersk, Matson, Sea-Land, etc. 40 years. It is a different maritime industry now…regulatory, technology, training, logistically….Good luck to you.

As a American trucker there isn’t a shortage of truck drivers. I been hearing this for 25 years. Yes I’m haven trouble getting loaded and unloaded at wear houses because they don’t have the man power to get us trucks empty or loaded. Plus the ports I been to on the east coast are only open for 8 hours for us truckers to make pickups and drop off. In my opinion the biggest issue is the lack of manpower at the ports and wear house. It was nice to hear what has changed with you guys on the sea. Bottom line the coast of operating your ships will be pass down to the consumer.

Thank you for explaining this to me. I don't really like watching or listening to the news. Too much blame thrown around. It's much better to hear a first hand account of someone in the field. Very well done Bryan most people don’t really understand what’s going on in the shipping industry, I spent 43 years in the industry mostly with APL on the west coast & hate to say this but I even predicted that there would be a big bottle neck sometime, the logistics of moving all these containers is always going to be a problem & can only get worse, there has to be big changes at some point … I enjoy your videos & keep up the good work …

Thanks for the explanation from a Mariners standpoint. I have been driving our boat in SoCal the past few months and container ships are literally floating offshore from LA, out to Catalina, and south to Dana Point. Last week I believe I read there were 100 ships combined between the anchorage, and floating offshore.

Great video and explanation. You are putting a complex supply and demand issue into layman's terms for everyone to understand. I understand a large number of containers from Savannah are being sent to storage facilities around the area.

I'm a truck driver and have been for the past 7 years. I for a trucking company in Seattle area. We are really short staffed at the company I work for, its wild man. We need at least another 3 drivers.

Yea there are all kinds of shortages in all facets of shipping right now. I have been getting mixed comments from truckers with some saying there are shortages and others saying there aren’t. Perhaps the shortages are more pronounced in some areas over others?

I'm a truck driver and I tell you it's not truckers holding things up it's port operations! I always dread going into ports because of all the bullshit I have to go through to get loaded. I also lose an entire days work because port workers do everything they can to slow things down and makes things hard as possible on drivers. Port of Houston is the worst I've been to and New Orleans is a close 2nd.

A really excellent and informative video, Brian! We don't get to hear the perspective from your side of the shipping business. It's a real shame that everybody has to rush to get into line, wasting all of that fuel, paying all of that extra salary and then having to be stuck at anchor somewhere. I would guess that since the engines have to be at the ready to move at any time that maintenance that requires a dry dock cannot be done. What about all of those refrigerated shipping containers? You might have a lot of perishable items with expiration dates? I see why a lot of items are shipped via air freight, with the hope of very few delays.

my assigned vessel is still at savannah anch. since oct26. im waiting for a go signal to travel from Philippines to US. to board my assigned vessel. hopping next week will have a good news.. as a sailor it also affects us.

Great video. Great explanation. But to look on the bright side, anyone working, in the "process" has all the work, salary/OT they want. Or anyone wanting a job, they are calling, go get them!

I wonder how the automated ports are doing? I'm all for keeping people employed and well paid but if I was a port owner I would definately be pushing for automation so you don't have to deal with unions etz causing delays.

It's not the unions' fault. It's the fault of the trucking companies not treating their drivers worth a spit so they quit. It's the fault of the railroads furloughing too many train crewmembers so they can be "precise." It's the fault of the customers for wanting too much. It's the fault of the customers for accepting foreign goods. And it's the fault of some state governments insisting all trucks be less than a certain age and belong to certain owners in order to operate in that state. The union members I know want to work. As did I when I could still do it.

good to get the shipping side of things. I'm trying to get to the bottom of this because my brother and friends of mine are all truckers and they say the shortage of truckers is not true. in CA that may be true because they have strict regulations as to what trucks can enter the state and truckers tent to avoid if possible. is it mainly lack of dock workers because of labor unions?

I think it’s a mixture of things. From what I understand it isn’t just a trucking shortage. There are warehouse and distribution center congestion issues, postal shipping delays, insane consumer demand especially the shift from retail shopping to online shopping during Covid that can cause issues at the distribution centers. I can really only speak for sure about the maritime side of things and not as much about the trucking side, but I will say that the ports are heavily unionized and don’t want non union workers working there. I don’t believe this effects any of the trucking that occurs outside of the port though

@@BryanBoyle As a trucker I deal with warehouses that only receive and load from roughly 8am to Noon. In all the major cities the authorities have traffic at stop and go especially the LA area. Most of it is con virus restrictions which caused stop work and big backups especially California. Look at what Elon Musk went through in California he had to move production out of California to get cars built. It's mostly identity groups that don't want to allow any work to get done... Oh and the biggest of all demurrage charges! Went to pick up a load in the port of Houston one day as a trucker. In lines the entire time get told I have to go to another building and get permission to be at the one I just stood in line for 3hrs at! Get to the other one and they are taking forever also and I finally find out they want the customer to pay demurrage first. So I get that information to the broker(ah ha moment) customer pays and I go back to the other building where I stand in line again. I finally get to the window and they take a long time again(not sure why wont tell me) Get told eventually that they need an appointment and wont load me today... There you go Bryan that's what us truckers go through at the ports.

Yea that’s a big part of it from what I understand. There’s also just not many places left to store everything. I believe retail stores operate essentially as warehouses, but since so many people are online shopping, that product comes from a distribution center. Since less people are in store shopping now due to Covid the retail stores probably don’t have much free space since they aren’t selling as much.That could cause some issues at the distribution center if they couldn’t deliver their products to the retail stores due to space issues. It’s no wonder the Walmarts and other big box stores put the Holiday decorations out so early as there is nowhere else to put them haha..btw if anyone reading this is more well versed or an expert in these issues at the distribution centers please feel free to comment as I would like to hear your take on it

@@BryanBoyle what's interesting is that many of the stores in the Savannah area have a lot of empty shelves. It is astounding to go to Sam's, Home Depot, Lowe's, etc and see so many empty shelves when the goods are likely sitting in a nearby warehouse or in a container at the port.

I just payed for a couple of containers at work from Taiwan, and there was like a $20k fuel surcharge at first, I talked it down a bit but it was still high.

That doesnt make sense that the warehouses are filled up and theres no where to put the product because there are empty shelves at the stores. There is something bigger at play here. Always is.

Working with SSL's myself, I think the real reason for congestion is that they've realized how good this congestion is for their business. They've gone from charging under $3k per container to over $10k all by continuing to offer planned schedules that they know will be impossible to meet, and ask clients/shippers to just assume a vague delay will occur that they themselves won't be accountable to at all, even though they contract all terminals/CFS/etc. Basically, the slower they go, the more congestion there is, the more money the SSL's make. So why would they ever fix these problems? This is just the way it is now.

Empty containers are not booked to a particular ship like a full container. Empty containers go into an empty container park at/near the port, and go on ship with available space - every container is income, and the business is highly competitive, so ships take all the containers they can fit into their schedule. There are laws against cartels and refusing service if service conditions met. Shipping companies have formed shipping lines - a group of ships visiting a circuit of ports perhaps once or twice a week. Refusing a container, means the ship behinds you picks it up if it meets standards - sometimes damage is found and a container is sent to a facility for unloading and repair or scrap.

because they are unable to unload the cargos due to a lack of supply chain workers. So warehouses are full and there is no where to put it.

Not to mention the global shortage of empty containers, thanks to COVID. My crate has been sitting at Port of NY for a month simply waiting for a container to go into.

Occasionally if we are anchored close enough to shore with readily available launch boat service. This hasn’t usually been the case for me though and the last time I actually got to to do this was at the Singapore anchorage which looks like a parking lot full of ships!

Hi Peter, I apologize for not putting any updates on my channel in awhile. My last ship assignment in Alaska was with a new company that ended up being strict about posting content. I had a ton of great footage that I unfortunately can’t share and just haven’t gotten around to creating new content. I would still like to post videos about answering common questions or topics but this would likely be from my home office with some B-Roll footage I’ve taken over the years for now. The KZbin money is nice side money but was never my motivation for starting the channel. I am also starting a new contract job soon in the film industry for a Netflix show that could lead to a change in Careers for me. Either way, I will be returning to sea at some point later this year for a trip and will more than likely be filming more content then. @@BryanBoyle I'm a transport analyst for land and air transport. It is really useful to understand shipping due to the ports. What I have learnt from you, alas, I can't afford to pay for. KZbin is invaluable in letting experts tell the world about important things. It also advertises the presentation skills of experts to present their subject. If Netflix has seen your work and want to hire you that is fantastic.

Union labor is taken very serious at these US ports. The unions want to have as much of the port unionized as they can and are therefore very powerful with the ability to completely close a port down as they did in Long Beach and LA in 2012 for 8 days. The unions don’t want non-union labor working at the port so this could prevent non-union truckers from working there as an effort to help keep up with the demand.

The blocking of the Suez Canal by the Ever Given in March must be responsible for some of this global shipping crisis. Hundreds of ships were delayed for many days. Hundreds of thousands of containers are still not where they should be. It could take another year or more to clear the backlogs. It’s not just increased demand for products from Asia.

Have you been to these warehouses and what shortage of employees is false at the ports and the footage of the UTRs seems like they are waiting for you to dock and you guys also negotiatie at anchor for a better berthing rate if your going to tell it tell it right

If you want to cruise on them, you can. There is a website to book passage on container ships.

Are there more containers travelling empty?? I heard Chinese exporters were pissed off with delays in return of containers their reuse after delivery of their goods. A portion of containers would always travel back empty to exporting countries, but as containers were taking longer to find a back load, more Chinese exporters were demanding that containers be returned to them empty for a fast reload of Chinese goods. This means more ship capacity is taken with empty containers and the situation has snowballed with port congestion - also due to the factors you cite. Australian exporters of grain to Asia have increasingly poured grain in bulk into a 6-metre container that has a timber bulkhead built just inside the container doors (so no pressure on the doors) for sale and export by container load. Normally, they were getting cheap container rates for backhaul use, but now containers are hard to come by and sale by container load is difficult.

In Los Angeles the ratio of incoming containers to export containers is about 5:1 - which begs the question if the containers are going back empty, who is paying for that?

@@ArtStoneUS the container owner - far cheaper to send it back home than build a new one. Container often worth more than goods inside.

@@peteregan3862 who owns the containers? One source I found said 52% are owned by container leasing companies - most of the rest are owned by the shipping lines

@@ArtStoneUS I would call a shipping line a container leasing company as well. I don't know the names of the leasing companies but should not be hard to find.
