I am growing a curry plant for the first time this year. I am living in New Zealand. So far, so good. "Colin" as I call him has grown about 30cm in about 10 weeks. I was looking to find out how to make the plant more "Bushy". You seem to answer my question perfectly. Thank you so much!

Thank you so much! I was very reluctant to prune it, after I see your video, I am more confident. This current tree I had it for 4 years, all others last only for 6 months to 1 year and so I am happy about this one and was so afraid to prune it thinking I will ruin it. Now, with confidence, I am going to prune it. Thank you so much!

Omigosh! Thank you so much for these videos. My husband bought me a curry plant for mother's day 3 years ago (when I complained of the trek to the indian market to buy them) and this year was the first year I brought it inside for the winter and I have flowers! Now I know what I'm doing wrong. I'll need to repot and prune ASAP! It's about a foot tall now and I'll be sad to prune but LOVE the hints. Thank you so much!

Thanks for this clear video. Has helped dispel some of the fear around pruning. A couple of questions: 1. Does the curry leaf plant respond to notching? Will notching encourage branching? 2. f I cut a long branch right down, meaning right down to the woody stem that no longer has leaves, will it branch from there?

Thank you for this! I have a very small plant that's about a year old, and was afraid to prune it, but you've given me the confidence to try. Do you have tips on how to fertilize/what to fertilize with? I've purchased curry leaves from a few people in the SF Bay Area who have BEAUTIFUL, full, lush plants and one told me she never fertilizes, one told me that she fertilizes with buttermilk, another with yogurt, and yet another said she uses regular organic general purpose fertilizer. With all the different opinions, I'm confused about the best way to go about it.

Question: what's the best way to remove the yellow/dead leaves and skeletons from the lower portions of the plant? We didn't know how to prune correctly until we watched this video, and now we have a tall (3 foot) plant that is bushy at the top but has nothing but drooping, yellowing leaves at the bottom. I'm not sure whether to pluck off the skeletons from the tree, or cut them with scissors, or what. Thanks! p.s. we are currently treating the soil of our curry plants (all indoor) with beneficial nematodes due to fungal gnats from overwatering.

I pruned my 16" curry plant and it didn't do anything, leaves yellowed and started to drop, absolutely no green shoots . This went on for about 5 months, from September till February with no shoots. Then I saw somewhere that it probably had gone dormant and needed to be severely in the spring. So a week ago, I pruned it and attempted to root the cuttings. In a few days, I started seeing tiny green shoots on the plant as well as the 2 cuttings that I am trying to root. Oh happy day, I didn't kill my curry leaf plant!

Help!!! First, I avidly watch your videos because they're super informative and it's great to have the perspective of a gardener local to my weather. I live in the north part of OC (not so far from your area) and am looking for advice on my curry leaf plant. I bought it online as a tiny plant - now it's about 3 months old and 4.5 inches tall. It really hasn't changed much since getting over the initial shock of being potted. I keep it in full sun, water only when dry and finally added a little slow-release fertilizer about 3 weeks ago but nothing is happening at all. It's not growing, it's not dying... it's not doing anything. Should I be seeing any growth at this stage? Should I prune it? I was advised by the plant's seller to keep it in a 6 inch pot until it's 12 inches tall. Do you think my pot is too small? Any advice will be very much appreciated!!!

Very informative. Thanks 👍. Just one question, could you please answer? - Can we start the first pruning when the plant is more than 6 inches tall? My plant is around 12 inches tall now, from the base around 6 inches the stem is brown colour and then above that is recently grown, so it is tender and green. Yesterday I could see it started flowering at the very top.

I'm in a similar zone to you, when the plants are established do they still go dormant in the winter? Or at some point will they grow year around? I didn't get any flowers this year.. some popped up in the early spring, but I gave it a hard prune and didn't get anymore flowers. Hope I get some flowers this next year!

Nice video, as usual. I'm interested in how you use these leaves. I don't think you need a whole separate video for this, maybe just a blurb at the end of the video stating what one does with curry leaves. Dry them? Saute them? Eat them fresh? Who knows? Not me.
@CaliforniaGardening
@CaliforniaGardening 10 жыл бұрын
Lanium Good point, I was actually going to add that at the end of this video, however I missed that part. Curry leaves can be sauteed with veggies. Usually the veggies also have some spice added to them (turmeric, salt, cloves etc). We also make tomato soup in which, at the end we take a large spatula, add some butter, heat it and add the curry leaves to roast a bit and then add it to the soup. Tastes great. Curry leaves are also a great addition to coconut rice - which is basically stir frying curry leaves and groundnuts in a little oil then adding rice and grated coconut to it. Try it sometime, its amazing! Hope that helps!

Search for Indian cooking recipes and you will find that curry leaf is used extensively. It is an herb cooked with vegetables, rice and meat dishes. Usually the leaf itself is not eaten (removed and discarded like bay leaf) although it imparts a definite flavor to the dish.

I freeze mine and add them straight from the freezer to my popu. The Hindi term is "tadka" or "thadka". It is also called "tempering". Google "how to make popu" and you will find lots of methods for making this. It is basically spices fried in oil. You then add it to a dal, or use it as a base for a curry.

Yes its good to use Epsom salt, Dissolve 1 TSP of Epsom salt in a Liter of water and feed the plant when the soil is dry every 3rd month and salt water every 3 weeks, and you can also use 3 tsp of iron sulfate or 1 tsp of iron chelate every 4-5 weeks to keep foliage healthy. dont water curry plant everyday but when you see the soil looks dry. hope this helps

Hello there! I always learn something from your informative video lessons. Thank you so much. We have extreme cold winters, and my tree goes dormant in cold temps. We use heaters, which make the air too dry in the condo, would you advise to cut the tree down to 6 inches near the soil for newer growth? I am asking this because, scales attack the tree in winter. To wipe all the leaves is a big task. Will the tree thrive back if I cut it way down to six inches of trunk? Please advice. Thank you!

someone sometimes Thank you and nice to know that you like the videos. You can prune about 30% of the tree and not more. It will come back up with new leaves in Spring/Summer. Hope that helps!

My 6" plant only has offshoots in the top 2" or so with not that many leaves. The leaves are also tiny. How do you get a branch so low? Should I still prune the tiny branches?

Is there a specific time in the year when we should prune the curry leaf plant in California? I am in the Bay Area. Thanks!

Hello. My curry leaves has grown atleest 6 inches tall, and I had beautiful bunch of growth on it. I live in a country where the summer blazing up to 45 degrees C. And the leaves look so dull and driedup. Can I cut of the entire plant? I has wide root, will the plant grow back again if I do so?

1. When do you harvest your leaves? Right now in the Central Valley in No California the nighttime temperature goes to 32 degrees and is sometimes windy and rainy; the daytime temp is around 41 to low 50s. I have my curry plant which is in a clay pot and roll it outside if the daytime temp gets to upper 50s or low 60s. 2. What happens when my curry leaf plant grows too big and heavy to roll it in and out of the house? Can I plant it outside and will it withstand the colder nighttime temperatures. Your advise is much appreciated. thanks.

+Abi 1. I harvest my leaves as needed! 2. yes, curry leaf plants in the ground can withstand lower temps. We have had freezing temps twice in the past 5 years and the plants are still growing strong. Make sure you protect it with black plastic if you expect the temps to go below 40: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJKciZh-Z6icmck

I prune on the top of the curry leaf plant and new shoots are growing but the bottom part leaves are kind of droopy, what could be the reason, any pointers. I live in zone 9b, my plant was nice and bushier like yours but now the leaves what all i had are kind of droopy and when i took off the bottom leaves no new leaves are growing its looking like a stick with just top new growth.

Great clip. Very instructive, thanks. I'm growing one in Tokyo and it's in its second season now, very healthy with lots of leaves. Is there a particular season that one should or should not prune? We are coming into fall right now, is it a good time to prune, or wait until next spring? I found last year the tree dropped all its leaves over winter.

+Silicon Lunch Thank you! Pruning is recommended at the start of Spring season, when the temperatures just start going up. That enables the plant to send out a lot of new shoots. Hope that helps!
