Cliff I’m a new sharpener and have a question. As I watch your videos. It appears that you sharpen pocket knives on you guide also. When I do this the bevel is way different than what I start with. So how are you doing this with what looks like the same factory bevel???

Cliff, I've purchased a 1 x 30 but have not tuned it yet. I've been reluctant since I power my stuff from a lithium power pack and I am concerned about draining it while sharpening since it draws more power than the Ken Onions I use. But after watching this video I believe that given the short time on each machine and the small total sharpening time the power station I have may do okay (620 Wh). I'll have to complete the basic rebuild on the 1 x 30 try it out.

My local farmers market has serious concerns to having people carrying knives longer than 4 inches. Local police chief says it breaks the concealed carry law for Wisconsin! Its friekking Wisconsin 60% are registered gun carry permitted! Maybe it's a blessing in disguise. Thanks for a nice video!

Aloha Cliff I enjoy watching your videos. A few years back I took interest in sharpening knives using the wet stones. I found out that it took a long time and it wasn’t that easy to do so I stop. Watching your videos sparked an interest again. I purchased the harbor freight 1x30 and gonna give it a go. I live on Oahu and one day would like to fly up to Maui to meet you. I have come to the same conclusion two light swipes on either side is perfect to tune in a cutting edge. I use 600 grit DMT ( Diamond ) plates. There is an extremely small amount of material that need to be removed bring the edge back especially on a well thinned knife. Using 325 mesh for DMT for secondary bevel.

I grind at a fairly low angle for most knives but above 12° where steel tends to fail. My goto angle is just above 15 and for hunting or hard use like machetes its closer to 18

That's a really hard question to answer so much of it depends on the knife and the situation. Most often it is just a feel...

@@CurryCustomCutlery In terms of feel I find that thinning the knife behind the cutting edge by 0.005" seems to lower perceived pressure to cut by 50%. I first focus on real world testing & then attempt to quantify the difference. You like I, seem like someone not afraid of making tools for to achieve intended results quickly. Do you use an angle guide when thinning the blade ?

Absolutely zero attempt...I drop the angle to about 15° on most everything to improve cutting performance. You cant go really below 12° without running into metal deformation but above that is fair game. Despite commmon misconceptions and half truths passed down this is totally ok. Real world testing proves it.

Your final belt grinder (deburring) has changed.. the wheels look different and you have two slots for the tool arm. The belt looks wider too.. did you change machines?

Swapped out for a 2x36 leather belt machine. Ill probably switch to felt on the same machine once the leather gets good and seasoned. I enjoy switching it up, keeps my process fresh and gives options.

@@CurryCustomCutlery What abrasive are you using for felt? I've just started with them, using an angle guide with it has given me a nice little bump in sharpness. I've started with Autosol, really keen to try Tormek Honing Paste on the second one, it works fantastic on the Tormek leather wheel.

Cliff, this video simply blew me away. I sharpen using the Tormek system but it is nothing compared to the speed and results you obtain with those 3 belt grinders. Absolutely AMAZING! It would be very helpful to do a short vid on sharpening serrated. Both steak knives and bread knives. In this vid, it looks like you use the edge of the belt to hit the scallops of the small serrated knives on one belt but then hit the other side of the knife on the next machine

Abrasive belts are used edge leading with angle guide. Stropping step is always done edge trailing to avoid damaging the belt and yourself.

I find that 15° is my sweet spot. Many possibly could be done lower but depends on all the external factors more like what they cut and what they are cutting on etc. If I was seeing any come back that were chipped or rolled I would know Im to shallow of angle...but I never do.

It was available thru amazon for a while but also from Aliexpress. Not cheap($550 with shipping) Look for 50mmx915mm sander Its 2' wide and can handle different lengths.

Quality is somewhat objective, if its sharp, feels good in my hand and has a blade shape appropriate for the task its a good knife, I never care what kind of steel they’re made of, I just sharpen them regularly.

Cubitron p120 is the perfect 1st step IMHO. It can remove damage and reprofile the bevel angle without overheating they jast 5 times as long and run 30% cooler shop.currycustomcutlery.com

15° is a great area to sharpen at. You can go lower but risk certain steels and certain knives to chip or roll. Going with a larger angle for hard work knives is something I do by laying on the primary bevel instead of the flat.

The concepts of the process is simple. If getting dull its not from the process but something not quite right in the progression you are doing. Fully deburring is critical.

There are differences with belts if you are going edge leading or trailing and that determines how to do the most crucial step the final stropping.

Was always told by my grand father, never sharpen dry . Always use a liquid! I sharpen now in my retirement days , I use whetstone s . And I have repeat customers . My clients are around 200 that call all the time . My last customer I had sharpened for said she had this guy sharpen her knives and they filled quickly. I researched that guy and he used belts like you , he burned the metal with the belts

He obviously didn't know how to use the belts properly then. I use Tormek, Wicked edge and 1x30 for my commercial sharpening business. I've never burnt a knife using the 1x30 belt sander.
