In college, there was a programmer nerd I was friends with that didn’t have a mouse. I asked him “how do you use a computer without a mouse?” And he said “if you know enough keyboard shortcuts, you don’t need one”. He got frustrated when programs written by amateurs had click only UIs/menus and would go and have to borrow a mouse from someone to use them and then give the mouse back when he was done. Guy was a legend.

These hotkeys aren't intended for end users, they are intended as shortcuts for business laptops because implementing a software shortcut to open up teams, for example would be ridiculously difficult, but if a s*** ton of businesses want this and they go to Microsoft, they can just add a five key shortcut and then business laptops can just have dedicated buttons. That as far as Windows can tell is just you clicking all five of those at once

The reason these are implemented is so that hardware manufacturers for keyboards/laptops can create buttons that open these applications without having to interact with the OS at all. When you press the LinkedIn button on your fancy business laptop it will emulate those key presses

Excel has always been the redheaded stepchild on MS Office. That the clipboard behaves differently in Excel from every other Windows application makes me angry every time I use Excel. I also insist that anything useful you can do in Excel you can do faster in Access, but I'm an old nerd who learned Access first. As long as you edit the registry to increase Access's ability to use RAM (it has been limited to 9500 concurrent memory locks since Access 2.0, but you can safely increase that to 500000), it works great.

I was not in IRC, however I went to a technical high school for a couple years in their computer science class. We all had a lecture for half the class and then we'd break off into our individual interests for the second half. The kids on the security track would learn all the ways they could mess with the other kids, so you learned pretty quickly to not trust them when they gave you a keyboard shortcut like that.

You can also type out any character including those not on a normal keyboard with the alt codes. That includes greek letters, math symbols, etc. Which means you only really need 11 keys. Alt and 0-9.

Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Win is the Office Key, on keyboards that have an Office Key, that's the keycode sequence generated by it. If you hit those with no letter, you'll get the Office menu.

I know government and nonprofit jobs are on there too. But most creative fields and the entire medical field are not on LinkedIn, as far as I can tell. So it's very useful to meet and talk to people that could help your career, as well as being a place for hiring managers and recruiters to look at you beyond the resume you submit. Some self employed people are on there for the sale of connecting with those industries, like commercial insurance agents don't need LinkedIn to prove they are who they say they are, but they could meet prospective clients as well as colleagues that are related vendors, like a property manager. LinkedIn is trying to make business networking virtual, I don't think it works as well as face to face networking.

The best windows shortcut is win+shift+S, let's you select a region on your screen to capture, and then both copies it to clipboard and opens the snipping tool. so frickin' useful, use it all the time in slack / discord etc, can just paste clipboard right in without even saving the ss to my harddrive.

My most used macros are Windows+E to open Explorer (your file manager app) Ctrl+W closes the current tab of most apps Windows+M to Minimise-All Alt+F4 on the desktop (after minimising all) brings up the shut down menu, defaults to the shut down option, so just hit enter if that's what you want. So quick shutdown is Win+M, Alt+F4, Enter Win+LShift+S is snip tool for taking screenshots of small parts of your screen (I've heard this got removed in Windows 11). Win+Prtscr takes a print screen AND saves it to a file in your Pictures folder Win+num1-9 opens the corresponding app on your task bar. This is dynamic, so if you normally have 3 apps on the task bar, but you have other apps open that aren't usually pinned, you can still use Win+4 to swap to the unpinned 4th app. I'm not sure if you can do this with the numpad, I usually use the top keys out of habit. Alt+Shift switches between your installed keyboard layouts (qwerty US lets me add diacritics to letters by typing ^'~` before the vowel, but I usually don't want this so I swap to qwerty NZ. The Maori language features diacritics like ā and ē that aren't used in other languages, so I also installed that one.) Most people know Alt-Tab swaps between apps you have open, but Win+Tab moves between isolated workspaces, for if you want to have a fresh, clean desktop just for work and to leave a bunch of documents open that you were reading/editing, but then you want another desktop just covered in all your trashy steam links to games you uninstalled a month ago and just a game + discord open, maybe youtube in the background.
