Unfortunately, although I'm of Chinese ancestry, I've never learned to read or write in Chinese. Just English. However, my father who was Chinese educated and in the traditional script, could read and write in such cursive script. He would stand for a long time in front of a beautiful piece of Chinese cursive script calligraphy, and admire it, explaining to me what it meant and signified.

To all the Chinese learners here: To translate 草書 to 'cursive' is a bit misleading, as you would expect at least some of the characters to be recognizable. In Chinese calligraphy, 'cursive' is an umbrella term with different levels of artistic intensity. This is 草書, the extreme form of cursive that is only used for calligraphy (poems) and sometimes signatures. A cursive form like this is not meant to be legible, although, you can learn the patterns to eventually read it. It primarily exists for its art. That being said, there is a middle way between this type of cursive and regular script called 行書 (行书) that has considerable influence on everyday handwriting. I suggest getting familiar with the rules of 行書 instead as Chinese people write in it all the time. However, if you are into calligraphy, appreciate this amazing demonstration of 草書!

Also, culturally in China, calligraphy is seen as a higher form of art than painting, so that may be a reason why calligraphy has so many expressive mediums.

Sorry, but pretty much everything you said was inaccurate. 1. There's nothing with translating it as cursive. Simply because a layman can't read it easily doesn't mean you can't call it cursive. I'm not sure where you got that definition from. 2. This writing in this video is not an extreme form of cursive. It's called "modern" or "small" cursive. The extreme form of cursive is referred to as "wild" or "large" cursive. The latter type is typically used for poetry or other well-known idioms or sayings (recognizing even one or two characters is often sufficient for referencing their entire text in your mind), but not necessarily. 3. Of course you can recognize some cursive characters while having no knowledge of the rules of the script. The numbers 1-10 can almost all be easily recognized. The same goes for many other simple characters such as 子, 此, 不, 大, etc. 4. Cursive is indeed meant to be legible! When the ancient literati and scholar-officials wrote letters to each other in cursive script, they of course wanted their writing to be understood in addition to showcasing their skills. 5. The demonstration give here is average. The strokes lack sturdiness and elegance. A few of the characters are in fact quite course in appearance (i.e., 毫 and 難).

But people can read this. There are people who actually can read this without difficulty. Chinese is supposed to be my mother tongue. I consider myself fully bilingual even though English is my dominant language, I’ve also learnt Chinese since young and speak it at home. Even I can’t read this writing.

in fact this is helpful when you want to investigate the author's personality. Often it is said you can see the narrator behind the script. I think it is true. Hanzi is born to be bind with graphology.

Mandarin is just a spoken dialect. You want to say "simplified" instead of Mandarin. Taiwanese people speak Mandarin but they use traditional characters. Also, even if you know traditional characters, you still have to learn cursive forms or 70% of them will not be legible.

There are very strict rules. It's just that almost every character can be written in several ways, some more complex than others. For example, the 日 components in the character 草 can be represented reduced to a horizontal stroke 一 (which is why the second 草 appears much more streamlined than the first one).

I didn’t watch the video completely. But from my knowledge I’m pretty sure the stoke order of a cursive writing is the correct one. If you don’t have the correct order, the character cannot be recognized. Therefore we can deduct the correct order from the cursive writing.
