The Curtis Commando was surely one of the most sleek and well-balanced looking transport aircraft of WWII? It had beautiful proportions with a sweep back to the glazed cockpit area and nose. The double semicircle section of the fuselage was an additionally dominant & striking element to its design. For reasons unknown, it never held the same reverence among the airlines as the DC-3 (C-37,Dakota) and subsequently losing its prominence to the public. My own experience having been with the DC-3 as well. However, by virtue of its extra power and carrying capacity, whose features were not wasted in the eyes of the military, allowed it to perform valiant service where it was available and most needed.

Curtiss did tend to make some uninspired flops of prototypes, but you can't deny that the C-46 is the C-47 refinement that the P-51 is of the P-40. A giant beautiful draft horse of the cargo plane world.

Hi there, just a suggestion. The designation of American aircraft during WWII, used the prefixes, P=Pursuit, B=Bomber, C=Cargo. A convention they have largely maintained when reformed as the USAF in 1947, except for F=Fighter, being substituted for the pursuit designation. So clearly I am sure you meant C-46,47 ?

“F” prior to 1946 was for photo reconnaissance aircraft. The Mustang was simultaneously the P-51, A-36 and F-6 in US service.

Could you make a video about the cargo plane Variant of the B-36 Peacemaker?

Apparantly only manufacturers of transportgliders understood the benefits of using a high wing and low groundclearance fuselage for loading/unloading cargo during ww2.

High wing low floor design certainly does facilitate fast/easy cargo handling. As in every design consideration there are also trade-offs. When the entire wing structure + engine weight + fuel weight are moved above the cargo area there can be major risks for ground handling, especially on soft and rough airfields subject to almost daily tropical storms with gusty winds. Field maintenance of temperamental engines was made more difficult. It was also well known that a strutted high-wing structure was quite efficient, but by the late thirties a great emphasis was placed on speed to differentiate from existing older strutted designs. By the 1950s, Lockheed was able to utilize much lighter turbine engines to great advantage when designing the C-130. They also held wing structural weight to an absolute minimum and quite a few C-130As have suffered wing failures over the years.

Hold on there, Festus! The USAAF designation for P is PURSUIT, as in P-38/P-40/P-51. The Skytrain (C-47) and Commando (C-46) are/were CARGO aircraft! Don't you proof read any of your copy/titles? You're a bit worse than "Dark Skies" in the first second of this video!
