Note to everyone... watch the explanation at the end. One of the better demonstrations and explanations of "board bowls" angles there is. Well done sir.👍

Cheers bruv. Nice simple explanation. I personally prefer the curve to the straight side. No straight lines in nature. 👍 Can't wait to have a go myself.

Most informative video. I noticed that you used three angles to cut the rings. I would have thought all cutting angles would be the same. The contrasting woods are very nice. Thanks two bunches.

Thank you and thanks for watching. The way a bowl from a board works you end up with thin walls. So by changing the angle it gives you enough stock to get a curved side on it. Thanks again, Gary

You sir are a very smart man. I am almost 67 years old. My Daddy was a Commercial Fisherman and a Boat Builder, so as a little bitty kid I was following around behind him with a hammer and a saw. So I have been a woodworker pretty much all my life but I have never owned or used a lathe. You and Mr. Phil Anderson have taught me more about becoming a woodturner than all the others put together. I do not know when or even if I will ever be able to afford a lathe, and I know if I do, it will have to be an old used one. See, I am a disabled Veteran in a wheelchair and disability don't pay well. Anyway, I just wanted to comment after watching the end of this on how you got the curve as well as your new tool. I am subscribed to you but I have no idea how to see any reply you make, but that's OK, you just keep posting videos and I will keep learning..........JP

Thank you very much Paul for your very kind words. I worked as a wood pattern maker minus 2 years in the Army and another 2 trying to get my head back on straight. I have loved wood working since I was in grade school and not just wood turning. I am sorry to hear about you situation and hope you are able to get a small lathe. i know 2 people that are in a wheel chair and are able to turn. I got through the Army mostly ok but I do carry a few disabilities' myself. Nothing like you though. If you were able to comment you should be notified of my response to your comment. All my best to you my brother, Gary

Hi Gary. Quick update. The tool steel did finally arrive a few months back but I had a series of retaining walls to replace beside the house and spent six months with contractors intermittently (!) working the project. Every contractor and sub was to their ears with work so it was very difficult to keep people on the job as they had way to much to cope with and too few workers to boot. So here I am in December finally watching this video again. Now I'm off to find the other video that showed how you used a tool post and flat attachment to build a multi angle fixture as I do not have the equipment to easily manufacture the one shown in this video. But first off to the dentist. Thanks again for all you share, you have taught me a great deal. Best of the Season to you and yours. Cheers, Gord

Thank you Gord and hope those contractors get it all done for you. I understand limited time to get things done for sure. The first fixture I made will work just fine. I just like making fixtures so did the others. Best of luck and Merry Christmas. Gary

Both: the level of the craftsmanship and idea behind of this invention are incredible and quite in your style, Sir! Adapting your idea to the possibilities of those who are without CNC machines is pricelless as well. Following you, I will try to execute it in aluminum (hoping without cutting my own digits with the bandsaw!) Thank you very much, Gary!

Thank you very much. For sure they does save a lot of nice wood that you have to purchase. I sure would not buy a huge kiln dried blank to turn a bowl. That is a shame for the real fancy stuff. I do not feel real bad if I turn something that was headed for the fire place though. Which it seems most of pieces of trees end up there. Thanks for watching, Garu

As soon as I saw the thumbnail for this video a game show bell went off in my head...ding ding ding. I knew how well it would work to cut any angle accurately. I had to chuckle when I saw the popsicle used to set the angle. You think like me at times. At least on the simple things. What flavor was the popsicle? LOL. There might be a market for this jig idea. ???? Well done, but be careful, you keep setting the bar higher with each video Gary.

My scraper is a negative rake scraper. That means it has an angle grind on both sides. With only one grind then you are doing it the way it is meant to be used. This scraper started out with an angle on one side and I ground the other. Very good finish and no catches. Hope this helps, Gary

Thanks for your explanation and graphics. I enjoyed the video and now see a way of making a "bowl from a board" with some shape, as straight sided forms just don't cut it for me. Thanks again for your considerable efforts to enlighten the rest of us

Thank you Jay, I will be doing a video showing how one can be made. Also I have found 2 parts that you can purchase and build one. I hate to buy the parts as I already made one but maybe I could resell them. Gary

I've got to try this. Thanks for all the detailed info. I looked for the video of the dovetailed bowl from board but didn't find it. Would love to see how that was done. I try to watch all your videos. You're a great teacher.

That is a beautiful bowl. I love the shine on it. The way it’s spread out is amazing! Very nice!! The tool that you made takes all the guesswork out of woodturning. Great job on all you are so talented! Bravo!

Very nice. Very nice. I want one of your jigs to try this on my own because I've done bowls from a board but like you say, the straight sides just make it look like I wasted my time on a not-so-pretty bowl. I hope you will be making the jig available. Your whole channel is so inspiring.

I am a furniture maker and get the bug to turn about one month out of each year, usually after taking a turning class. I love the idea of turning a bowl from a board, both because it diminishes waste and because it gives rise to design opportunities. I will have to give it a try. Thank you very much for the inspiration.

The explanation alone was worth the price of admission! The bowl itself came out beautifully. Gary, thank you so much for sharing all of these things that I’m sure took up a lot of your time to develop. It’s great when someone with your background is available to us! Cheers,Rick

Thank you very much Rick! I was not exciting such a nice looking bowl but the Yarran is very pretty. I spent a few hours drawing the part up and did cut some on my CNC and skipped one setup to safe time and cut some on the band saw. Happy you liked it. Gary

Thanks Gary, I was going to make the wood guide for my bar, but the new guide direct to the banjo is brilliant. I will have to make one and try it. I had made several bowls by cutting rings with bandsaw, but this looks much better.

Thank you Greg, I do like the direct fit to the banjo. At the time I made the wood one I was working on the metal one in my head but to get the turning done I made the wood one. It works but I do like to improve on everything I can. Thanks for watching, Gary
