Wood Turning the Knucklebones Bowl

It seems the Great Illusion did start as a quilting pattern made by Ruth Ann Berry
I make another Illusion bowl which reminds me of a game we played as kids.
The name Knucklebones comes from the game Jacks.
This one is much easier and has a different look even though the center is the same.
I was asked to give the dimension and shapes of the piece in my Great Illusion. So at the end of this video I will have a short section with that information.
Made from Oak, Cherry, Maple and Cambia Poplar (AKA Roasted Poplar)

It's interesting how you can get the rings to fit together so precisely. I run all of my rings through a drum sander using a jig that I made. Thanks for the videos! It inspires me to build something.

I sand one face on my disk sander then the other on the lathe. Very fast and I do not have room for a drum sander.

These illusions are so hard to “un-see”. Once assembled they just won’t let me see the pieces, only the whole! Very well done both the turning and the explanations. Those segmented patterns are a wonderful kaleidoscope illusion. This project looked great with lots of chatoyance, a great finish and name. Not sure why knucklebones, but I like it.

Gary, I really like your videos. All beautiful work. I made the knucklebones bowl using butternut, maple, and cherry with black walnut as the rest of the base. I discovered that there is really no need for precise measurements of the component pieces. What I did was rip all my stock to the same thickness ( I used 0.75 inches ) and then use the stock to set the distance between the saw blade teeth and the stop on the fence. For the 6 dark triangles and the diamonds use one stock thickness. For the parallelograms and trapezoids use 2 stock thicknesses. Everything comes out perfect without any fiddling or measuring. I made dozens of components so in addition to the bowls I am using the knucklebones feature as the centre on some charcuterie boards.

You are correct there is not need to measure anything unless you are trying to make something to an exact dimension. I did not measure mine either. But others needed or wanted those dimensions just to get started and understand the process. Good to hear it all worked out for you. I think I mentioned that what ever the first piece works out to be then work off of it not the dimensions I have. Thanks for pointing that out I sure it will help others to understand.

I do enjoy making these and have a few other illusions I want to do. I kept thinking the illusion I did before this came from the knitting world. A viewer pointed out someone name Ruth Ann Berry and I looked her books up. While looking at some of the work there it was. The Great Illusion I did a few weeks ago. Amazing work she does with yarn. If I tried to do it in yarn it would look a big blob of yarn bunched up. I do plan on getting a nice little log for my next turning and then I have another surprise in the works. What I appreciate about this setup is that no material is wasted. Other assemblies made with solid wood require turning to the final shape, losing a lot of wood. And the final effect is fantastic.

Thank you very much Marcelo. For sure it does save wood. But buying the wood this way cost much more than a chunk of wood from a tree. And very little of that gets wasted as we use it around the garden and some of the shavings can be used for smoking food. Other wise those pieces get turned into firewood. Thanks for watching, Gary

I have done a few segmented bowls they take a lot of time but we’ll worth the job satisfaction when finished. You guys get beautiful wood. The climate here is so different and thus also the wood. My kiln is full all the time in order to reduce the serious moisture content. I🤣🤣

For sure segmented work takes more time than turning chunks of logs but is rewarding. Where do you live? We have a local hardwood store that imports wood from all over the world so lots of choices. @@ThePapa1947 I live in Ireland. Gotta be the wettest place on the planet. 🤣🤣. Not too much really nice timber makes it this far I’m afraid. It’s nice to be able to get gorgeous timber locally. Would it be quite expensive to buy that locally for you? I would say it would cost an arm and a leg to order from over seas to here. I remember ordering a pack of 5 pen blanks one time, tiger wood, took 6 weeks to get here. It was lovely though to turn though. Thanks for the reply by the way👍

@@pmacd9760 we have a lot of wood that grows locally. I was able to get all of a English Walnut tree that had to be taken down because it had died. I cut up the blanks and then some of the cuts I made into strips for segment work and dried them in my kiln made from a cardboard box. The price of wood that I get kiln dried has gone. Price from $5.00 a board foot to $30 for the exotic stuff. Which I do not buy. Something Padauk is around $10-12 a board foot. The price changes as they get their orders in.

Thanks Gary, I made a lidded box like this after seeing your platter. I cut my glue up in half and did the bowl from a board on both halfs for bowl and lid. I used a chop saw to cut my sections. I used 0.53 thickness, then just used the stock width as a spacer between the blade and stop. 1,2 or 3 thickness depending on part. I used spalted maple, white oak and red oak on a walnut background. Ended up 10 diameter and 4.5 inches tall. Thanks for the inspiration!

Welp I found out I’m allergic to morado lol. I did a bowl with it last year and my face blew up big time but I thought it was poison ivy. So I ditched it for this bowl (after I made all the rings) and went with mahogany. It turned out pretty nice. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!!

Excellent project Gary! I love these kinds of efforts. This was my first love when I began to work with wood in high school. Probably goes back before that when I played with building blocks as a kid. But I love these geometric patterns, and all the different illusions and shapes that can be made from them. There is no end to playing around with these shapes. I love how you explain so well how you do everything. Providing dimensions as well is really helpful. Thank you very much Mark. I have always love these things as well. As a kid I would get a new toy and after a week I tore it apart to see how it worked. That is what I am told. I am the youngest out of 8. I knew these shapes were old and today a viewer pointed out someone who has a book on knitting illusions. So now I know where this actually came from. For those who can use it, a FREE WARE cad program can make the design phase a whole lot easier, or pay the big bucks, your choice. What always gets me is the actual illusion caused by the different shades of wood and their alignment. Your skill is always apparent, and your knowledge of these processes shows every time. Yes, you were a pattern maker, and that helps, but this is art not mechanics, even if some mechanical things are involved. Great video. '-)

Thank you Robert. Yes there are a number of free CAD programs and some are very good. There is one called DesignSpark that is very powerful. The program I bought has built in CAM which I use for CNC work. It also as a decent ART program where I can do engravings. Not a big bucks program but it works. @@ThePapa1947 try the upholstery stapler trick I mentioned in the previous comment. It works really well for this type of glue up. Use 1/4" upholstery staples and a pneumatic gun. I build polyhedra. You should try that.

Very welcome Jim. Almost all these illusions are based on geometry. And luckily it is one angle that will be used to make it. At least most of the time. I just uploaded one this morning that is based on only one angle setup to do the illusion. Have fun making it, Gary

Gary, that is great--both the piece and the explanation. Every time I look at these pieces, my head spins! Still can't believe they are basically flat glueups! Great job.
