CUSTER STATE PARK South Dakota

Custer State Park, located in the Black Hills of South Dakota was our last stop on an awesome 2020 trip to the Western United States!
We started on the Wildlife Loop Road and made our way up Mount Coolidge to check out the panoramic views from the fire tower. Next we were able to get up close to a large herd of Bison who were making their way south along the highway!
Continuing south on Highway 87 we took a scenic detour through a section of Wind Cave National Park and headed back toward Custer. From here we drove to Sylvan Lake and then on the Needles Highway and through the famous “Eye of the Needle” tunnel!

Great video. Custer State Park is a magical place. We were stationed at Ellsworth AFB in the early 70s. Did not want to leave and wish we hadn’t.

We loved Custer State Park especially the Wildlife Loop. Actually saw a wider variety of animal there than we did at Yellowstone National Park. Probably spent an hour just watching the Prairie Dogs at one point. Also loved the Needles Hwy. Unique scenery and drive, especially going through the tunnels. You sure had a nice surprise coming out of the tunnel.

The wildlife loop was great and did not disappoint! We were really surprised people were driving motorhomes and pulling their RV’s on the Needles Highway! Im sure the tunnel has claimed lots of paint and awnings!

Thank you for the kind words! The Dakotas are a hidden treasure! We saw a few larger motorhomes making their way to the tunnel and were not quite sure how they would get through much less turn around on the narrow roadway! It is pretty neat to drive through! Hope you have a great day! God bless!

It is beautiful! From the information i have found the narrowest part of the tunnel is 8 feet 4 inches wide. We saw campers and even small motorhomes making their way towards the tunnel.

We Were there in 2019 autumn. Loved the aspen and fall colors! It is a totally under‐rated park, with gorgeous vistas and wonderful wildlife, (did you see the prairie dog villas?)and South Dakota has tons of great places to visit!

I found this information online about the tunnels on the needles highway. Hood Tunnel: 10 feet, 6 inches wide; 11 feet, 3 inches high Needles Eye Tunnel: 8 feet, 4 inches wide; 12 feet high Iron Creek Tunnel: 9 feet wide; 12 feet, 3 inches high
