Hello there from New Brunswick Canada. I also own a 1954 M152. I didn,t think i would ever see another camper conversion on this model of truck since there wasn,t that many built. I also converted mine to a camper. It was great to see your ideas and might incorporate into mine. It took me 18 years work to complete.. it was a complete tear down and reassembly. What you are doing with yours is a little different than what i had planed for mine,witch is to visit different lakes in my ares,stay overnight,scout around a little on my Rokon,basicly travel dirt roads. A few notable mods i made, 472 cid Cadilac motor with it,s mating turbo 499 transmission, Sagina power steering from a Dodge Ramcharger and hydroboost power brakes from a Chev deisel pickup. I,d be happy to send pics. Enjoy that good life.

I don't know if they are still available, but 20+ years ago 4.89 rear end gearing was available. The standard 5.83 (as I recall) is a severe limitation for highway driving even with the 350 V8...I know this from actual experience. If memory serves me correctly, the top speed is about 85 mph at near 5000 rpm. I can understand the 11 mpg at 55 mph, and even with the 4.89 gears the aerodynamics of this vehicle just plain suck, so what the 4.89 would deliver probably will not be 20 mpg but possibly 14 or so. I too ran radials, but they were using the split ring wheels and tubes. As I posted elsewhere, I did have an auxiliary two speed transmission installed, but the vehicle was lost in a fire at the mechanic's shop. I never got to drive it with the added transmission. That particular body is indeed rare.

You would have been better off replacing the engine with a Cummins 4BT or a Cummins 12 valve. Better fuel economy and a lot better torque to get that beast up and moving and also for off-roading. Maintenance would have been cheaper in the long run on the diesel as well as longevity of the motor, whereas you're probably getting less than 10 mi per gallon out of that gas motor where you could get 18 to 20 out of a diesel.
@charlesboston13 жыл бұрын
12valve won't fit
@jackdawlove3 жыл бұрын
A 4BT would have been awesome. But, was just too expensive for me. Plus, gas is a lot easier to get and deal with in remote parts of Central America. Not to mention parts for a small block Chevy anywhere in the Americas vs a Cummins. I get a solid 11+ mpg cruising at 55.
