My son is home from college for the summer and it was nice to finally get in the garage and do some work the XJ. In this video we install a new stereo, speakers, plus a custom DIY ashtray auxiliary switch panel. We also try and hunt down the fuse for our cigarette lighter to see if we can get it working again. Lot's of electrical stuff in this video!

Couple comments. First wire nuts should only be used for home wiring. Not automotive or trailer wiring. Vibration can cause them to come off. Solder like you did or use crimp connectors. Regarding the soldering. You shouldn't melt the solder on the iron and then touch the wire. The solder just lays on top of the wire. Heat the wire with iron tip then let the solder melt down through the strands. Much better connection. Since you don't smoke (I don't either), I went to a junk yard and picked another 12v outlet. I then wire this to the existing 12v outlet and replaced the lighter. Now I have two outlets that are always hot. Just a suggestion.

The other thing I forgot to mention, I saw when you were putting the head unit in the dash, the unused blue wire had exposed copper. Can't remember if that's for a power antenna or for an amp but if it becomes energized you're going to have a short when it comes in contact with metal.

@@TrailRecon also to go with that on the heat... that is why putting the iron tip on one side of the wire and then the solder itself onto the other is ideal, it lets the heat pull the solder into the wire... also when you find wires pre cut it's always a bit easier to twist as you pull them off as it cleans up the and twists the wire ends... I also prefer to twist any wire before I tin it... and lastly, it's a good idea to make a good mechanical connection between the two wires before soldering (which means don't tin them), simply twist them together so they aren't relying on only solder to keep from separating... on larger wire you can fray the wires a on both sides a bit then push them together, tamp them down then solder for a clean joint.

My XJ had a second set of speaker wires run into the doors for the Infinity tweeters that mine didn't come optioned with. They ran up past the stock speaker and were attached to the metal of the door with a plastic clip. The original speaker wires were toast but the Infinity ones were fine. I just tapped into them on the cabin side and bingo, worked perfectly without having to run new wire through the door. Those XJ driver's door wires take a beating over the years and I've had to trace a lot of electrical gremlins through there.

I'm picking up a 2k XJ from a friend soon and been enjoying watching though this; my daughter just got her permit and my son will be getting his next year so this should be a good option to teach some good basic stuff and will enjoy teaching them some basic things like which way to turn a wrench, how to change their oil, and change tires... and thanks to this I think i'll force them to do a little soldering on the stereo install, although I don't think they'll be psyched about me moving my subs over to this (nothing gets eyes rolling like mentioning your subs to your young teens haha)

Although it is a bit late now, one thing you can do is chock the tires, then turn the ignition on (not starting, just run), then shift all the way down. That gives more room for pulling the bezel.

Great video and great training you are providing!!! A few little critiques though... Wirenuts do not belong in a vehicle; the choice is solder or crimp connectors. Might have tried to actually troubleshoot the speaker wiring, rather than jumping right to replacing it - very hard to run wiring as well as factory and your son would have learned some very valuable electrical troubleshooting. One last (little) thing - always brace behind the speakers connector when pushing terminals on - I've had the little board break and the speaker's junk then. This is from a 31 year electrician/car electronics installer/fabricator/off-roader. Overall AWESOME though - GREAT JOB!!! Wish my Dad could have taught me the way you do.

the good thing is you checked the fuses first, when my O2 sensors went out and threw all kinds of codes and made my TJ run like a pig I replaced the sensors which made the code go away for about a day and then it came back, little did I know, that the O2 sensors had fuses and the fuses were just blown, spent 60 bucks and days of troubleshooting to find out a 10 cent fuse was my issue all along LOL.

Too bad you guys didn't just google it or do a little research on you tube, I could've told you before you ever got started what the problem was! When I got mine, only the 2 back speakers worked. 5 minutes on KZbin & I already found the issue! The XJ's are NOTORIOUS for wire breakage at the hinge point in the drivers door. If you would've just slid that black boot back, you would've seen your problem instantly! A few fresh solders with some shrink wrap & BOOM, those new speakers would've been kickin! Just remember guys, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS search KZbin or google first for things like this. These trucks are awesome but, they do have some common issues. And most of them are really pretty simple fixes once you know what it is! They have a lot of die hard enthusiasts that know every little quirk & common issue to these things which can save you a lot of time & headache when someone else has already figured it out!! Take care guys. Shane Bratcher (Kansas City).

Nice project. Fun to do. You’ve probable used a wire diagram for the stereo connectors? This took me a lot of hours to figure out since I have an Infinity sound system with 6 speakers and an amplifier under the rear seat which I all replaced. I kept the original Chrystler stereo for the old school look and connected a car interface on the cd-player output for bluetooth and mp3 streaming plus carkit. Works fine. The following speakers and amp fit perfectly as well. Audio upgrade JBL Gto 629 129/158mm rear JBL Club 6520 front JBL Club 750T tweeters front JBL GX A604 300x206x52mm The colour of the speakers vary from the stereo to the power amp and to the speaker! My tip? Take your time to measure all wires and label them. The power amp needs thicker positive (and negative) wiring directly from the battery with it’s own 40 amp fuse. I’m looking forward for the next video!

Brad, did you ever fix the lighters? No? Try this: 1. Take out Chrome Skull guy and try a new fuse. 2. On the back of the lighters you can unplug them, unplug both and put a new fuse in. If it blows you know it's the wiring. 3. Plug one at a time back in and see if that blows it. If it did I would just replace both, they're pretty cheap. You could even make one a dedicated USB port.

@EyebrowsMahoney
@EyebrowsMahoney 6 жыл бұрын
Kara, Please don't reinforce IGNORANCE. There's a difference between giving someone advice on what they should do with their rigs, and how to do something properly. This isn't someone bashing on their selection of bumpers or lights (which normally I would agree with you on - don't tell someone what to do with their rig). This is something that can cause a failure or fire. Wire nuts have no place on vehicles. They were designed for use with solid core wire, and are relegated to the use in homes and stationary installations. Vehicles vibrate and with stranded wire, these nuts can work their way loose resulting in shorting out and possibly even causing a fire. Sure there are gonna be the one folk who "never had a fire and this is always the way he wires his rig", but I've had to fix so many stereos that people used those damn things on and had one too many dash fires because the previous owner used those and speaker wire for unfused power runs to let people do something so stupid. Do not use wire nuts. There are proper terminations for every application and wire nuts on vehicles is not one of them.

Lord guys for the guy who said DO NOT USE THESE ON YOUR RIG!! Thank you for pointing out something that is not as obvious to some folks as it is to you, however you could have used a little more respectful way to explain a point that you are absolutely correct about. Not everyone is as informed on wiring applications in vehicles as guys such as us who have either been educated from the start on the correct way to do these projects or have learned the hard way. For the guy attacking back with “DONT TELL PEOPLE WHAT TO DO WITH THERE RIGS” I can understand that you may feel like his comment was abrasive, or bossy, even though it might have come off as disrespectful to you, I feel sure that it was simply him trying to pass along knowledge that will keep you and your rig safe and in one piece. Trail Recon’s host is a very humble respectful family man, who does a good job of bringing informative Jeep upgrades repairs and general ideas, also the best part is getting to see those things put to the test being able to get an honest review of all the work parts and repairs.He does all this while keeping his content clean and entertaining for viewers of all ages. Take Jeep beach for example Daytona police department puts 3 extra officers per sector on duty to deal with traffic over flow same place and just as many people come October’s bike week, the department is all hands on deck and the also offer anyone inactive military police “MP” a job just to work the event as well as all the counties and city’s police around Daytona volunteer to work bike week as well that’s sometimes still not enough. We are all here to do the same thing and that’s enjoy the outdoors and have fun while living out our child hood dreams with these amazing rigs we all build. That do not mean that we should be acting like kids. Let’s keep the respect and goal in sight guys. Most of all this is a great channel with a great host who does all this not just for himself to to help all of us, and give us a way to share idea and help each-other, not act like kids. Best wishes to everyone here. TR thanks as always for sharing your builds.

On the xj the cigarette lighter and charger are backwards on a lot of them , so the one that says cigarette lighter is actually the charger and the charger is the cigarette lighter. Try it and you’ll see

You should run new wires anyways Because aftermarket speakers draw more power then stock speakers and then they won’t fade out at higher volume

instead of those spin on wire nuts you can also get some that crimp on but splices that and wont slip off... your way was probably the best way but not everyone has that ability.

There is a positive and negative, but if your not running competition, it sounds the same. I know, Im gonna catch flak from all the purists, and wannabe competition nazis buts it is what it is. Also, thank you for the speaker size info. Im about to replace the fronts in my Grand and i have 6 1/2 sitting at the house, but didnt know what was in the door right off. You answered that and I dont have to pull the panels twice now.

feellnfroggy if you mix the wires up the speaker will be out of phase.... WHETHER they are competition speakers or not...
@feellnfroggy
@feellnfroggy 6 жыл бұрын
heyitschino never had that problem unless the speaker had the little capacitor built in. Both wires dhit the cone in the same place. A speaker is like a short to ground circuit. The comp speakers with the little capacitor ensure the proper current flow, but if you don't have that, it's a non issue.

Did you ever figure out the death wobble issue in the XJ? I replaced tire rod ends, stabilizer bar, had an alignment and have new sway bar bushings yet to install. The tie rod ends took care of the death wobble but I still have rear end wobble at fifty mph or greater which I believe is due to a dented wheel.

Decently cheap to maintain, expensive to upgrade, but thats where the fun comes from. If you can look for a 1997-1999 XJ because those do not have the occasional 0331 head issue

That's a great idea for the soldering. I've always put the wires together and tried to solder them at the same time which, from the looks of this, is much more difficult. Do you have a link to the soldering iron by any chance? I just have an old Radio Shack iron but it doesn't work so hot (pun intended) anymore.
