We just bought a 2’x4’ table from ALD, it was around 20G. This is impressive that you built this hardware and integrated with software. Excellent drive and ambition, love your beds also!

Looks awesome. One word of advice from someone that programs 5-axis cncs for a living. When your machine is running the program, it is actually moving from point to point, even in curves. The points in a curve are just really close together. So when you are making radii etc, the machine tends to "cut corners" and never actually makes the arc 100% correct. In big radii you don't notice because it's a smoother cut line, but on small radii, it's more noticeable. When we machine small holes (this is in plastic parts but same principle), we have to slow down from a 200 ipm feed rate to 25 - 50 ipm depending on how small the hole is. Same thing with small, short moves where the machine has to accelerate and decelerate relativity fast to make the next move. Slowing your feed rate for those small radii/moves is the key to making the machine run smoother. Not sure how much slowing the feed rate will affect cut quality with the plasma but it's what we have to do on small radii to get correct dimensions. We run Multiax T-series machines for what its worth. Regardless, awesome job on the build.

Very nice machine; very impressive. Suggestion: If you will put an additional hold point on the plasma cutter wand (up higher) it should take out most of the torch vibration and clean up your cuts. It is very difficult to stabilize a single point of contact unless you just make it very massive. Just a suggestion..

Amazing build. What impressed me most is how tight a tolerance in dimension and straightness you maintained using structural steel (proved by ease by which the gantry moved). I am thinking about doing my own build. I wondered how well a single sided drive on the gantry could be made to work if the linear bearings had more spread between them. Of course this would require longer rails to maintain the same travel. It is probably better to not cheap out and just plan on dual drive.
@ryanmacewen511

Fantastic. Outside observer, I have a few suggestions. Lighten your gantry. There is enough metal there to machine with. Not needed at all for a plasma. Less inertia will be your friend in precision and speed. A second clamp for the torch may help with wiggle. But friggin awesome! subscribed!

Seems spreading out the gantry bearings with an upside down T braket, as well as building whole gantry as light as possible for less resistance no the quick direction changes? Maybe? Idk anything about programing cnc or even cad, though would like to integrate similar machines into my business someday, but this is obviously a factor in regards to drivetrain life cycle & cut quality....not to mention Overall power required to operate/efficiency.
@Cumminslife
@Cumminslife 5 жыл бұрын
If i spread the gantry bearings I lose cut area and building it as light as possible would be ideal but is not really a factor anymore with the 2nd motor.

Do you have motors driving both sides of the gantry? It looks like one side was lagging behind a little. I had to slave a second motor and run one on both sides to keep the gantry from shaking on the non driven side.

Not to sure about the wifi thing. EMI is a killer, use shielded cable everywhere is my biggest tip... But other then that, looks pretty darned solid. And yeah the racking with just one stepper was something I was going to comment about but you already caught it. Well there might be one more suggestion, protective covers for the guides and racks. To protect them from dust, debris and moisture.
@criticallook1352

Why use metal slats for the waterbed? Would it not be less expensive to use 2" x 2" ceramic tile, standing on edge, to support your work piece? Either epoxy the ceramic tiles in place, or form small rectangular pockets by welding appropriate size thin gauge metal to the base of the waterbed in order to support the tiles upright. I understand that many believe the metal slats provide grounding to the work piece, but the plasma cutter comes with a grounding cable with a clamp on one end to make electrical contact to the work piece. If ceramic tile is used, you would eliminate blowout, and buildup of dross, on the metal slats. The tiles can be strategically staggered about the waterbed, forming a structure for your work piece to rest upon. At least, that is how I plan on making my cnc plasma table. :
