This is a newly designed and fabricated generator shelter I just completed. It features all steel construction with machined greaseable weld on hinges. It has it's own theft alarm system along with it's own cooling fan and a wireless remote start amongst other cool features.

Unbelievable job! I'm contemplating buying a Honda generator myself. They are certainly reliable and well-made. I have a small house, about 1200 sq ft. What amazes me is that with the market for generators what it is, you can't find a company that produces decent shelters. Yours is the best I've seen. Thanks for the look-see, you certainly know your stuff!

Thank you Tony. Well I used to be a Honda tech at one time and the Honda name has been one of my favorite brands for most of my life. Yes there are less expensive generators but I can assure you they are not as good as the Honda. Your right about the shelters. No choice out there. Plastic don't prevent theft and can burn so after looking for a few weeks I decided to build my own and wifey and I ate very happy with it. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Happy to hear you like it. Cheers.

great build.Another idea for loud generators is if you build a underground storm shelter make a spot for you generator below the ground and that way you wont draw as much attention to you when everyone else is out of power. Great job
@itchyvet
@itchyvet 9 жыл бұрын
OfficialHankIII Sorry buddy, but underground is NOT a good idea. Carbon monoxide gases are heavier than air and tend to collect on the floor. If persisting in underground set up, special requirements are needed to ensure the safety of operations. I actually installed one like this, and discovered the Gen set would stop after a certain time. Took me ages to work out it was oxygen starved. Installing fans and ducting seemed to resolve this issue to some degree.
@alexhatcher8812
@alexhatcher8812 9 жыл бұрын
***** CO is not "heavier" than air. CO is only 3% lighter than air, so if it is mixing with warm air, it will rise. Mixed with cold air, it will hug the floor. Oxygen starved isn't the same thing as too much CO in a pit.

You are truly a great craftsman with an amazing set of skills and great eye for detail. That said, I am amazed that you don't have some sound deadening panels covering every square inch of the interior of the beautiful box, including the floor. Your machine's sound waves are bouncing around inside there and in a way the box, while very secure, is like a speaker. You could easily eliminate 75% or more of the noise if insulated properly. I have a similar setup and lined my box with thick rubber pads otherwise used in horse trailers or stalls. Even a layer of cheap Hardy Board would be helpful. Great work though! Thank you for sharing.

It’s been there for six years. It can’t be heard in the house. It’s actually very quiet but when I video taped it I used a directional mic which made it sound loud. Why didn’t I use deadening ? Well there’s one thing people don’t consider when insulting these things because of sound. If you use the deadening you also keep the heat in the unit and I didn’t want that. Six years old with no issues so my design worked flawlessly so what more could I ask for? Thanks for your kind comments and keep well.

That's a fantastic job! It looks like a transformer. None of that is overkill for this province, can't be to secure or weather tight. Next step....roll of foam for acoustics and an off the shelf cartridge air filter for that cooling air intake to keep the blowing snow from getting drawn in the shelter.

Thanks. When I did the video I used a directional mic. Shouldn't have done that, made it seem louder than it actually is. The house is 20 feet from the unit and we can't here it when it running so I'm ok with that. Haven't had any snow get in yet. With the weather we're getting this morning I might get need that bugger before it's all over. Keep safe.

Super job. Well thought out. Two suggestions: foam sound deadening on all four sides and lid. And modify the intake grill up the sides in case snow blocks the bottom. What's stopping someone from unscrewing the ramp catches with a socket wrench ?
@7863348
@7863348 7 жыл бұрын
People don't realize that sound deadening also holds in heat which I don't want or need. The video was taken with a directional microphone boom on top of the camera making seem loader than it actually is. We can't hear the generator running when we are in our home so we simply don't need to deaden any sound. If you look at the ramp cataches and the hinges on the lid they are actually machined hinge pins that I designed with grease zerks on each end and are "welded" to the body of the enclosure so the only way to get them off is to use a plasma touch and even then it would be a tough time to get off. Thanks for watching.

Keep in mind, this is a portable generator. No need to permanently wire it to the structure. The wireless remote is used mostly when the generator is not in the enclosure and out doing other tasks. Why did I use a portable generator? Because we have a very reliable power provider. In the six years this enclosure has been there the generator was needed for a total of 23 hours.

Geez Bob this box is beautiful! Wonderful job! After reading some of the comments concerning your extensive security I have to say I agree with you 100%. Go a few weeks without power with no hope of getting a generator and you will likely see many typically "honest" people who would take your generator in a second. I saw some disturbing behavior during the blackout in Connecticut in the fall of 2010 including pickup trucks trolling neighborhoods looking for unsecured generators and gas (even though there was no real gas shortage). Better to be prepared.

Thanks Bob. I built that this past fall. Wifey figured we'd never need it but I wanted some kind of back up just in case. With all the power issues that's been going on it sure came in handy. The first time we ran it, it was running for 20 hours. Lots of heat in the house, lights, a way to cook. TV and MOST importantly internet lol. The best part with this set up for us is I can still use the generator off site when I need it. We got another mess on the way. Not sure about you but I'm tired of winter at this point. Thanks for commenting. Any questions feel free to ask. Stay safe.

Very sweet job. As a contractor myself, I have bought several Hondas in my life. They are tough as nails, whatever power wattage that is advertised on the Honda will do for 24/7 hrs. Hondas are really under rated in output wattages. A 6500 watt genset will run at that rating all day. Try that with a Harbor Fright unit. I think not. jmho.

Nice shelter; you must have some welding and other technical background to put together that professional looking structure. I could never have the perseverance to complete a project like that, and I'm too cheap to want to spend the bucks for it. But it's a beautiful work of art. For now, I'll stick to my cinder blocks!

Wow... I'm in awe.... You two are truly blessed to have such skills, as well as the resources to go to such lengths... what a "neat" project, in both senses of the word. This is the first of your videos I've seen, but I know what I'll be doing for the next few days in my spare time... watching more of your videos! I have my own unfinished projects (totally different area of interest), but your fab skills are amazing. (and Kathy's too :-) Have a blessed New Year!!

We are so happy to know you enjoyed this video and we hope you'll enjoy a few others ones we have on here. I'll be uploading a custom mod video tomorrow on a Kubota tractor I just completed. I'm curious to know what your hobby's are? Thanks for taking the time to post your comments. All the best to you and yours during 2014. Cheers. Paul

Its very nice! Well built and well thought out. The only thing I'd add is to have some kind of additional fuel storage that's piped up to the engine directly. Like a 5 gallon drum size tank with valve/tap to allow for the standard fuel tank on the gen to become the "reserve" tank and the larger one be the main fuel input to allow for less frequent refuelling.
@7863348
@7863348 8 жыл бұрын
+Alaster Sagar Thank you. It's been there for three years now and has been used around 40 hours total so a reserve tank is really not needed at this point. The main garage is 30 feet away with plenty of fuel there so that's why it wasn't a concern. I'm hoping we won't ever need the unit but it's nice to know it's there if we do need it.

Thanks Bill. It's actually a quiet generator. I had a directional mic on while filming making it seen louder. It's 25' from the house and we don't hear it. Insulation means more heat so that's why there's none.

Thanks Roger. As I mentioned in the other comments I never planned on sound proofing the unit because we can't hear it in the house. Insulation also keeps the heat in and I didn't want that either. The neighbours genset next door makes more noise than ours. It's been a great unit for our needs. Thanks for watching.
@RogerSayers
@RogerSayers 9 жыл бұрын
Ok, guess I didn't catch that. I was thinking soundproofing would hold down the sound from neighbors, but sense they have a generator, and most likely will be running when yours is, no problem there :) Theirs just may be way louder, so they would never hear yours.... Never the less, Great job you done there... Have a great day.

Well thank you! When I design and fabricate anything it's my goal to have it look as if it was factory built so I appreciate your comments. As I said in the other comments, the system is actually very quiet. The problem was with the very sensitive mic I used in the making of the video. The other problem with adding deadening material is it also keeps heat in and that's just what I didn't want. That being said, our home is 24 feet from the generator and we don't heart in the house yet our neighbour turns there's on and we do hear there's and they are 700' away. Thanks for commenting!

@7863348 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks. It sounds little noisy on the video due to me using a directional boom mic at the time of filming. It's about half as loud as the Honda Generator inside it. The sound level wasn't a concern because there's no homes next to us and although it's 30 feet from our home we can't hear it when its running. When designing the unit my concern was protection from the elements, security and a design that would last a lifetime and then some. It's been there for a few years now and still looks new and there's nothing I would change other than I did put a LED street light by it that will run only when the generator is in use.

HI Paul,,great job. I can tell you are a perfectionist. As you will find out 6500 watts won't go far during an extended outage. Can't imagine several days. You are missing a rack to store gas cans. You might also consider some interior hooks to hang extension cords..If you want to upgrade you can purchase an LP gas manifold to replace gasoline. A 250 tank would likely keep it running for a few weeks. I personally like my Generac whole house with auto transfer...don't need to be home to start it..( my fear is no heat here in Iowa,or to keep my sump pump going. I also purchased a home link that allows me to operate / monitor all load conditions, frequency, temps, alarms etc... Hopefully we won't need it...although it's storming and we have had a couple outages,,,the unit goes through a 5 min exercise cycle to keep seals and verify battery charge....it all just comes down to money and comfort,,,lol...peace..thanks for sharing. 👍👍

+Cary Hubbard It's a 6500 watt unit and as you seen its a Honda. It has 30 amp breakers. We have a separate breaker panel for it with dedicated circuits that run the lights, deep freezer, fridge, microwave, oven. A few stove top burners but. We have an induction cooking pan we use too, outlets in most of the house (some areas we don't use all the time). The furnace and a few led street lights outside. It's been great although it's only been used for 24 hours in two years but that was the worst 24 hours in our weathers winter history. No back up for the garage other than sucurity because if if the power goes out we got an excuise not to go to work lol. The enclosure it's self has been fantastic. Never leak water and looks like it belongs where it is. Thanks for watching.

Nice, thinking about doing something like this on my generator setup mainly for noise reduction. On another note been watching a lot of videos related to generators. For having such a small population, there sure are a lot of Canadians on KZbin. Not faulting it you guys are very resourceful and educated. Either you just make more videos than people in the USA per capita or KZbin promotes your videos more.

Wow, what a great hideaway for your very expensive Honda. You must of spent a lot of time making that enclosure. I was only thinking one thing. Metal would vibrate the sound waves much more than wood or plastic. Did you think of using some kind of sound proofing foam on the inside to quiet it down even more? It looks great. Good luck on someone taking that, never happen.
