I just made these for my son’s camper van and they work great! I followed the instructions pretty much exactly and they look fabulous! Easy to put up and down. The only tricky part was stuffing the Reflectix into the covers. I found that it was easier to accordion fold the Reflectix than to roll it. Thanks for the video!

Fantastic video! The tip about making the magnet pockets is gold!!!!!! One constructive suggestion though: enclosing Reflectix inside a curtain effectively nullified nearly all of its insulating properties. You should have either left one reflective side visible as a radiant barrier or chosen a thermal insulation such as thinsulate instead. Regardless thank you! Making videos is hard and you make it look easy. Well done.

Hey Chris!! After living with "curtains" like this for over 2 years, I can say with 100% certainty, they work! Even with both sides being covered, we have zero issues with them. When we pull them down you can feel the hot or cold right away which means, they've been blocking it very well. Maybe a different material would be better but these work great!

These look GREAT! I just made mine the same way - very happy with them - although I have a passenger van, so no exposed metal to use magnets. I'm going to have to use velcro dots on the windows instead. This really is such an easy DIY project, even if you're a crap sewer like me :-)
@FnAVanLife3 жыл бұрын
Awesome!!!! So glad these worked out for you too. We loved ours before we sold them with out first van - they were custom fit after all!!! Lol 😆 I'm not the best at sewing either but I'm about to do a bunch more projects for our new build. Wish me luck lol

Do you Velcro the magnets to the plastic part in your van? Or just the Velcro instead of magnets?
@akiwiincanada3 жыл бұрын
@@16Gould1 just use big Velcro dots, stuck to the fixed part of the windows.

probably! I have like zero experience sewing and I was able to do it with my machine. If you can sew a pocket with a handheld unit you can do this too!

Thanks so much for sharing this how-to video. Can you tell me what size magnets you recommend? 12mm? 15mm? or?
@FnAVanLife2 жыл бұрын
Hey Bryan! I don't think the size matters so much as that they are rare earth so they stay nice and strong over time. You can sew the pockets to whatever size you need to fit your magnets! Thanks for watching and glad the video helped! Alex

Hi y’all! I’m behind on keeping up with your travels. I think you’re still in Mexico, though. I’ve watched this video twice now. I was wondering if you could post an Amazon link to the exact magnets that you’ve used? I’ve got to get going on making blackout shades. Thing is most of my windows, and I have a lot of them, are framed with wood. But like a box not flat. If that makes any sense. I would have to use double the magnets because I would have to glue them to the windows since I don’t have access to the metal portion of the van. I thought about going with Velcro, mainly because it be a lot less expensive. But I know that it can get to be a mess when it’s washed one too many times. Help I need some advice!!
@FnAVanLife2 жыл бұрын
Plus the glue on velcro tends to melt in the hot sun. Did you see our video about our new window covers? Much better and no magnets if it can fit in the back. The side magnets I will grab for you too! kzbin.infotbgqwBbsADw?feature=share

Knowing what you know now about making window covers, do you think you would do anything different for the new van?
@FnAVanLife3 жыл бұрын
Great question Kristen! Yes i actually would change one thing. The magnets I got were pretty cheap and lost their grip after a while. Other then that they worked great. It's funny you ask cause I'm literally working on my new window covers now! We'll have a new video about how we're doing these ones soon!
