They're called cooling towers. From the top, hot water from the turbines is sprayed down at a cold water basin to cool it down. Then the water is sent back into the steam generators inside the Reactor housing to heat up again and repeat the cycle. The fuel required for the reactor is quite expensive that's why it has high upkeep.

Hi nathan, you did better than expected. The following is gonna be a bit geeky. There is no cooling. If you observe any nuclear plant in the world, you will see it is built near water sources. Large amounts of water are needed to cool the steam in secondary circuit. To explain this, both power plants, nuclear and coal, are based off a steam machine. The heat generated by burning coal or breaking down uranium is used to heat up water, create high temperature high pressure steam. That steam is then lead towards steam tourbine, where the motion of steam is transformed into rotation, which is than through electric engine used to create electricity. For safety reasons, there are 3 circuits for water/steam. Primary circuit is directly in contact with nuclear fuel (small cubes of uranium encased in steel, submerged in water). Here temperatures are about 300-400 °C, with high pressures. Heat from here is transfered through heat exchanger (something like radiator, but water or steam on both sides, bigger and made from copper) into secondary circuit. In secondary circuit, water is used to generate vapour, steam, and create electricity. After that, the remaining steam with temperatures slightly above 100°C, is cooled by water in tertiary circuit, to become liquid again. Water in tertiary circuit is then lead toward cooling tower, where part of it is evaporated. The remaining water is then mixed into river, ecological organisations ban heating the river water by more than 2°C, so no boiled fish. Now, the used fuel is usualy stored in the area of the power plant, and since only 5-10% of fuel is usualy burned, it requires cooling. I bet that is why the mod it includes the fans - since heat is produced slowly, fans are enough. One modern reactor produces 1000-1500 MW, usualy there are 2 of them for each set of generators, so the amount of energy produced is realistical. I know that in our nuclear power plant, they upgraded the peformance of tourbine, and gained an extra output comparable to a new coal plant. To think there are eco activists against nuclear energy is so silly. Now a few ideas: 1) The fence should be all around the plant, inside it is an industrial area, it would be an obstacle. 2) Since it is an industrial area, dont use the decorative paths with trees, maximaly around entrance. 3) The long thingy with circle at the end is probably water sucking device for tertiary circuit, like the round thing would be inside dam. 4) Add water outflow afterwards. 5) Doubled powerlines as for decoration - there is huge amount of energy produced so there is not a single powerline leading out. 6) Why is there included the default power plant? It doesnt fit, small like kid´s toy. Real cooling towers are about 250m tall. 7) If you wanna decorate, you may add some industrial type of park or sculpture, power plants are where companies go and splurge any penny to improve visage. For example in my country, there is a small castle made into nuclear plant museum for visitors, right next to it. 8) The layout should follow how the energy is made - from one side - water sucking -> reactors -> power generators -> cooling tower -> waste storage + fans -> water outlet, reactor, cooling tower, power generators should be connected with pipes, power generators should have the electric cables leading out. Of course, in between could be any path system, offices, parking, police station, cantine, but the main functional buildings are as I mentioned. 9) Bring in rails, as industrial decoration, doesnt have to be functional. 10) A cooling tower would fit nicely in front of runways. 11) Since it is a dangerous game full of disasters, add all sensors in vicinity - earthquake, tsunami, deep space radar, and probably a vault for employees.

Hello Nathan! I just binge-watched whole 65 episodes in one week and i gotta say i very liked your gaming and willing to watch more. You are doing so well and I don't know how your videos dropped on my page but glad it did. Keep going i love your videos and day after day i tell my friends about you and your videos (of course to those who understand English). I have some suggestions about the city first i would like to see the fourth uni with a grid system with a bunch of thiccccc trees. Secondly, it would be nice to have a little village waaaaay far from the city like a mountainside or beachside, etc. like a little getaway from the city and have some rest kind of village. That's all. finally, i finished all of the episodes now i can contribute to the names of the city, districts... Love from Turkey its a pleasure to watch you.

No, it's not a chimney. Nuclear power plants don't produce smoke. The cooling tower does exactly that: it cools down steam / water. Coal-fired plants MIGHT have an integrated chimney in their cooling tower depending on the design chosen.

They are called cooling towers in English, their function is their name, It’s not very creative. There is an old decommissioned nuclear power pant near where I live in Northern California’s foot hills. Last Friday there was a wild fire out there, it burnt for several hours at zero percent containment with tanker aircraft dropping fire retardant on it, until it started raining. Thankfully the wind was pushing the fire away from the power plant and no one was harmed with no damage to anyone’s houses. P.s. If you want to make your power plant more realistic a cooling pond is a staple of nuclear power plants, it is where the non radioactive water goes to cool down then re circulate through the heat exchanger.
