Very fine custom job. Years ago I was considering modeling the Chicago Central & Pacific. At the time there were no Paducah rebuilds available so the every locomotive would have been a project like this Recently, the locomotives have become available and in the CC&P paint scheme "Al things come to he who waits"? Alas, my layout planning now focuses on Colorado. Even though the CC&P was absorbed back into the IC I would recommend it for consideration by anyone interested in modeling a Midwestern prototype. The many locomotive variations could be fascinating for anyone who likes customizing. CC&P had its' own bright red unit train and the route even saw the Amtrak California Zephyr on occasions when it had to be detoured due to flooding along the normal route.

One tip for those MRC decoders would be a sugar cube. I've added a few of the MRC/Digitrax drop in decoders which they sound good. But nothing compared to ESU/sountraxx. But a good sugarcube speaker helps make the sounds louder and more clear.

Well, Ron, when I want to rust something on my engines and rolling stock, I use real rust. Here's how it's done. First I take some 0000 steel wool (fine) and put it in a quart jar. I then add enough white vinegar to cover the steel wool. I set it in a kitchen window until the steel wool is all rusted and nearly consumed by the vinegar; usually takes about a month or two and I shake it every so often. I then pour the mixture into a glass baking dish about 9" square and place it in my closet until all the liquid evaporates, usually 1 to 2 weeks. I then use my single edge blade scraper and scrape all the rust into a pile and use the razor blade to pulverize the rust which turns it into a rusty powder. I then pour it into a container like a snuff can. When I get ready to use it I mix some of the rust powder into a small plastic cup (communion cup) with a drop or two of Elmer's glue, a couple drops of isopropyl alcohol (usually 70%) and a drop of water soluble glycerin. I mix this up and apply to the engine or rolling stock. If I want to make the plastic look like metal, I usually make a thin wash out of the rust powder and wash the piece and let it dry. It makes the plastic look pretty much like metal. So when I want something rusty I use REAL rust.

As I am modeling a fictional shortline, I decided I wanted to repaint and decal some of my locomotives. I've chosen to go a slightly different route, by brush-painting with latex-based wall paints, since places like Home Depot can tint little half-pint samples to literally any color you bring in a sample of. To reduce brush marks (though, I'll admit, not eliminate them), I added Flotrol (which required me to find a graduated measuring cup with a half-ounce graduation). The painting went well enough, I think. If you have a steady enough hand, there's no need to mask areas off, other than to create crisp straight lines. I even found that sharpening a toothpick makes for a good tool to scrape the paint off of the windows when you slip. For decals, I chose to go with one of a few available products that allow you to print your own decals with a computer printer, choosing the Blinggasm brand laser printer decal sheets (because of the cost). This was a mistake, as the plastic that makes up the decal isn't quite clear. It's close, but not so close that the area around the image doesn't end up a slightly different color than the paint of the item you're putting the decal onto. Thankfully, I tested the decals (three of them) on an unimportant item, and did not end up messing up my locomotives. Since I wasn't going to be putting decals on the locomotives (yet, at least), I tried to take the shine off the semi-gloss paint with Matte Polycrylic, and found that they apparently don't know what "matte" means, as it turned out even shinier! I ended up putting another coat of matte paint over top the polycrylic and called it done (for now). I think I'm happy enough with how it turned out, but would certainly like to give the custom decals another try with a different brand.

Wow Ron. I'm still at that stage of weathering where I can't decide if I want to try it with chalk or paints. I've seen so many failed attempts at weathering on various model railroads that I am a bit hesitant to start in. Taking a saw to a hundred dollar locomotive would be well, traumatizing, for me. Your example here, certainly is tempting enough to make me try though. Great video.

This was a fun project. The video/photo process showed up several small flaws that I want to go back and fix before weathering. Lesson for me--on a detailed project, before you say "Done" take some close up photos and blow them up on your computer screen. You will see things you want to fix before it is too late to fix them.

Years ago when I worked at The Great Train Store in New Orleans, customers would come in and want to buy a New Orleans Streetcar. At that time no manufacturer made one, we would sell them the Brill Trolley which is shaped closer to the New Orleans Streetcar than any other manufactured streetcar and they would have to paint it. Since then, Bachman has made the Brill Trolley painted like a NO streetcar but even so, a few details are not the same. I am in the process of taking a Brill Trolley and adding a different shaped roof and removing one of the ridges on the side. Also, I have been unable to find a Brill Trolley painted like a NO streetcar that has a motor. So I will try my hand at these modifications and then attach the NO streetcar to the Brill Trolley motored chassis. The first time I removed the body from the chassis, I cracked the body as I was putting it back on. I think old plastic is more brittle than new plastic. I'm thinking of gluing the crack back together (which glue do you recommend) and filling the cracks with putty. I have loved model trains for many years but I finally have a place I can build a layout. Of course I have to include the streetcar since I road it to work regularly for over 10 years. I have always been good with my hands but this is my first trek into model railroading. Wish me luck on the Brill Trolley make over and I would appreciate any suggestions you have.

There can be, depending of how the light is installed. You may need to fashion some sort of light baffle if this is a problem.

Hello. Great job on the loco and presentation video! I recently purchased an FWWR Sundance Kid HO SD40-2 Paragon3 loco from.There is a small chip in the blue paint. Can you recommend the exact color as well as the type of paint, enamel, acrylic, gloss, semi-gloss, ETC? Thanks, Jack.

I cannot guarantee an exact match, but I used True Color enamel paint here. They make a Fort Worth and Western Blue and Yellow. I would try that.

Good job on the locomotive if you ever do it again try micro mask spray on with an airbrush I think it'd be easier to mask the locomotive done with tape

Ron, can you share tips on how to bend those coupler lift bars? I used the same ones, but they exploded like they were made of spun glass when I went to bend them. And don't tell me prayer or luck, tried both no workie!!

Did you use CA glue to install the fan blades and grilles as well?

Yes. Metal to plastic, thus dissimilar materials, CA is the way to go.

I was thinking of doing the fwwr cleburne subdivision for my layout. It sounds like it’s hard to find n scale stuff in fwwr, and I don’t have the skills you demonstrate here. Would you ever consider building one more and selling it? I have found some stuff in HO for FWWR so I can go that route and just model a shorter road. Great video Ron! Thanks.

I would have to think about that custom build. What I didn't say was that I fooled around with this one for nearly 2 years before it was complete, and it still isn't weathered.

I still have some of the decals available if you decide to tackle the project. I'm getting out of n-scale and never got my locos finished.

Ron, will you be adding the front number boards before you weather it?

The number boards are in place. I will have to acquire decals with the numbers which did not come with the sheet of decals. Still looking for them.

Ron, I'm going to go on a limb here and say..if it isn't already..the time, effort and results of this project will probably make this loco your favorite.. You asked if we ever custom painted.. All of my OTS is custom. I have never done the details as you have...just disassembly and paint. Perhaps I'll line them up for a photo and email them to you. Tom

I don't work in S scale, but custom painting works the same regardless of scale, and I will be custom painting another N scale loco for vodeo soon.

Question..... why when two or more locomotives are used to pull the trailers one must go in reverse? why can they all go on same direction?
@RonsTrainsNThings
@RonsTrainsNThings 6 жыл бұрын
They can all go in the same direction, but most ofter to last locomotive will face the opposite direction of the first because there are not a lot of places to turn locomotives, so if the consist needs to go in the opposite direction the crew simply boards tha cab on the last locomotive and they are driving forward in the opposite direction with the same consisilt.

Custom painting is one reason I fear N Scale. Yeah that sound is horrible, not the volume but the quality. The horn sounds like a breeze in the trees and the bell sounds fake.
